"I told Sensei in person that I probably wouldn't be here today without his wonderful work and started crying. He saw that, came over to me, and gave me a big hug. This day is sick, wicked sick. I can't stop crying...🥲"
@sakaimii
"Hey, tourist, who knows none of the language, take a trip to North Scumblefuck Japan so you can take in the local culture with the locals, who will look at you like a space alien and speak 0 English." Cruel joke.
Because the watch-wielding dandy here says "ビースト様" (Biisuto-sama) I wrote a note for my editor going "Well, this is going to be unfortunate wording, lol."
Miura's sudden and tragic death should serve as a reminder that the manga industry as a whole tends to be absolutely brutal to artists and assistants alike. Being serialized long-term is a dream come true, but it can easily become the most miserable draining experience ever.
these aren't written in first person. Japanese just isn't conductive to getting spat out of a translation bot with 0 context and will default to first person if not fed anything to prove it otherwise lol
If it weren't for Dragon Ball, a young mutt black child from a nowhere neighborhood in Jersey wouldn't have taken Japanese seriously and would have spiraled out of control after losing their dad. As silly as it sounds, Toriyama-sensei's work took the place of dads for some kids.
Undead Unluck Ch 191 - These were all a different first-person pronoun. With some exceptions (Language uses "Lan") they're all "I," so I decided to translate the leadup to "go" differently for each one based on what their first-person pronoun's personality gave off.
I felt like drawing last night and this is the day I officially got to know
@dansalvato
6 yrs ago according to Facebook, so here’s looking at you, Monika. ONLY you, ofc.
1. Being one of, if not the only, black J-E translator for Shonen Jump, having my name attached to big name projects from incredible artists.
2. Having a small part in one of the most viral games of the 2010s in DDLC with my friend Dan. Eternally proud.
Black folks: post a true, non-humble, flex about yourself that you’d never say out loud because you have couth.
I wanna see Ya’ll BRAG on what your Ancestors have rendered!
Me: I’m one the best thinkers, writers and speakers of my generation.
Just got done watching ep 1 of Undead Unluck. Eyes were glued. Every tweak in the pacing and direction was perfect, and, man...like, man...this really is the series I started working on 3 yrs ago. Like, shit...this really is Undead Unluck. I'm so happy.
I tend to visualize text in the bubble when I TL manga. Your word choice can be super accurate, but it can make for some awkward breaks, so I find it important to always give things a 2nd pass and see if I can tighten up the verbiage to avoid this.
Very glad to announce that I'll be translating this title. A hell of a lot of effort went into this title as a TCG player and an old nerd, so I hope you all pick it up when it hits stores! It's a great manga!
Announcement: Attention Magic: The Gathering fans! The original Japanese manga, "Destroy All Humans. They Can't Be Regenerated. A Magic: The Gathering Manga," with story by Katsura Ise, and art by Takuma Yakota, releases Fall 2024. Includes an exclusive card!

In college, my friend needed an artist for a few game ideas. As we worked on them, he decided to make a free VN to help get his name out there so I helped w char designs. He got the mega talented
@_Satchely
to make them come to life. Rock on
@dansalvato
i feel like a post telling people about this always crops up, but for any artists, designers, people who casually know "oh japanese is written vertically, therefore..." The elongation bar (長音符/音引き/棒引き) gets placed vertically, not horizontally.
Just wanted to leave this here. I know I've been leaving excerpts and quotes all day, but it's only right I do this.
これまで得たもの、これから得るもの、全てが遊戯王のおかげです。高橋先生、本当に本当にありがとうございました。先生がくれたその「記憶」は永遠に.....
I guarantee you that reading Yu-Gi-Oh! from beginning to end is worth it. Duelist Kingdom alone has some of the best moments of the series. I would NOT be the person I am today if it weren't for this manga. It's one of Jump's best.
I feel like I need to host a seminar for Japanese companies where I just show them the words AI with a big 🚫 over it and if anyone has objections I just start flinging chalk at them.
What if the plot of Jump Force was actually that everyone is a plastic anime figure given life in the real world which explains why they look like they were prepackaged and shine like they were dipped in baby oil.
I saved the aesthetic. You're welcome.
I can attribute every success in my life to Yugioh. There has not been a day I've drawn breath on this planet that I have not thanked Takahashi-sensei for his work—work that gave me strength in some of my darkest hours. The utterly tragic circumstances of his death devastate me.
It's baffling how much of a shitposting genius renaissance man Kajetokun was and how few people, not even people in my generation sometimes, even know his name lol
I know a lot of new translators tend to think of dictionaries as crutches when they're just the opposite. Just knowing the word off the top is cool, but some dictionaries & thesauruses can really help in providing deeper insight or jogging your memories. Use them. A lot.
Finalizing Andy's catchphrase in English was a collaborative effort between me and my editor and I'm glad that it made for something memorable EN-speaking fans can quote.
Chapter 201 of Undead Unluck and Language's very existence comes to torment the translator...I mean, Nico and Ichico once again! Read my tears on the SJ website/app and enjoy 🥲
I love Undead Unluck and love working on Undead Unluck. Thank you all for reading and getting excited on release day because it makes all the hard work worth it. 🙇♂
This is pretty big because this is essentially why I wanted to get into localization so bad even though I ultimately had no part in it.
It's been my dream since the turn of the century to get subbed YGO to people in some capacity. Five arduous years later, all 224 eps are out.
All 224 episodes of the original subtitled Yu-Gi-Oh! series are now available on Crunchyroll.
Read here for why this show (and the story of its creation) are so inspiring:
GET WILD, everyone! The big project I've been waiting to talk about is finally here! Chapters 1-10 of Tsukasa Hojo's iconic manga, City Hunter, are on
@MangaHot_intl
! I've been pouring my all into every facet of the localization, so I hope fans enjoy!
This was probably the most labor intensive thing I've done in a while. I combed JP tankos, JP Weekly Jump chaps, and even the 2017 Jump GIGAs where Jujutsu High/0 was short-run serialized. I think the work paid off in the end and I can't wait to see the final product!
NEW SERIES ALERT! 👀 Undead Unluck by Yoshifumi Tozuka starts this Sunday! What happens when an unlucky girl meets an undead guy? Pure chaos! Read it FREE from the official source this Sunday!
My favorite manga-ka, Kazuki Takahashi, lost 1/3rd of all his blood while writing the final arc in Yugioh. He barely made it out alive, but he still finished the series. When he first made this public, I couldn't believe what I heard—it made me really rethink being a manga-ka.
still feels unreal:
●i managed to weasel my way into working on two amazing manga series.
●both received stellar animes with amazing casts.
●i've received kind words/praise from both authors in some way shape or form.
Three years later, 160+ chapters, and an anime on the horizon. I had no idea what I was signing up to when I first started, but I'm so grateful to Undead Unluck for all it's done for me. 😭
Here is a translation of Jyoji Morikawa's thread on his time with Takahashi-sensei around the time when Takahashi-sensei was drawing Go-Q Chouji Ikkiman's manga adaptation in Weekly Shonen Magazine.
Damn, finally dawned on me that I'll be coming up on 5 years of working on Undead Unluck with 220 chapters released. Time really flies. This series really opened doors for me, so I can't help but be eternally grateful and humbled.
i hate HATE that
@DistantValhalla
pinged me that the new Sonic game has an ending song had an ED by One OK Rock with the wildest change to a hook between album and in-game product i've ever seen in my life
Gokurakugai Ch 17 - Originally, Alma is so stumped by Utsu's question he says ゑ (we) which is an outdated hiragana not used in modern day Japanese. In an attempt to emulate this from the original, Alma exclaims Spanish "qué."
Undead Unluck Chapter 194 - For this page, I had the arduous task of citing panels for the letterer, Michelle, to paste in. I only did the ones that had dialogue I could spot. This took longer than translating the chapter lol.
Sunday will mark Undead's 200th chapter and today marks Undead's 24th episode. Surreal that I've worked on this series for 4 years already. Feels like yesterday I was looking at the storyboards for this series and wondering if I was cut out for it...Manga is magical.
this Donpen saga is sending me
1. Don Quijote says they're changing the Donpen char.
2. Someone claiming to be prez of DQ says he wasn't informed.
3. That person has the exact same name as FF14's producer Yoshi-P.
4. That person actually WAS the prez of Don Q and Donpen stays.
Did a little test on some cardstock laying around. Still not there but we'll get to a comfortable level sooner or later lol. 次は水ペンとかでもう少し色を薄めたらもっといい感じになるかなって🤔
The voice actor of Jigen Daisuke, the legendary Kiyoshi Kobayashi (88,) will be stepping down from the role for the (almost) first time since the Lupin anime has been conceived. Solid Snake mainstay actor, Akio Otsuka, will be taking his place. A great actor to fill the role.
Thrilled to announce that I am translating this book. A whole lot of manga know-how is in here and a lot of anecdotes from Torishima about his time with Koji Inada, Masakazu Katsura, and of course, Akira Toriyama. Be sure to peep this on bookshelves when it comes out!
Announcement: Learn how to make manga from past editor-in-chief of Weekly Shonen Jump, Kazuhiko Torishima, who collaborated with masters of the craft. Dr. Mashirito's Ultimate Manga Techniques, written by Kazuhiko Torishima with Takanaka Shimotsuki, releases Spring 2025.
celebrate black history month by giving props to the only(?) black core three-person team working on a Shonen Jump title: me,
@brandonbovia
and
@Decaf_Pixel_Kat
Undead Unluck 208 - Fuuko asks for help by saying たすけておくんなまし (tasuketeokunnamashi) おくんなまし (okunnamashi) is based off of おくれなさいませ and older and codified version of してください (shitekudasai/please do~) hence the more "formal" way she asks in English.
Didn't know what trajectory I'd be on when I started TLing manga. Never thought I'd land onto a series as perfect for me as Undead Unluck for 4 yrs. I thought I'd get booed off Twitter at first, but the fans over the world have been rly kind. Please keep supporting Undead🙇♂️
i want to run a panel called the "yugioh you may not know" where it's me asking the crowd of 3 people trivia like "name the functions of a duel disk" and have them groan and roll their eyes at me.
Undead Unluck Ch 220: The final line of the chapter is actually a callback to the first chapter's アオリ (marketing text) and the tagline for the back waist slip of Vol. 1 in Japanese.
working in localization is looking at jp and going "yeah that's obviously jormungand and this here is oceanus and this is nyarlathotep" but it's also looking at jp and going "is this breath or bless"
Funny story: At that small con yesterday, a passer-by sees my hat and goes "Bro that anime is wild!" I thank him and ask if he's read the manga. He says no, so I explain who I am and assure him it's good. He gets super excited and vows to read.
I'm an Undead Jehovah's Witness...
AnimeNYC was a little funky, but I can't lie and say it wasn't the most memorable. Seeing what Undead's become with my wonderful editor, all of the fantastic cosplays, and getting to have brief words with the author, a person I truly respect, was simply amazing. I am so humbled.
Some people know about 4Kids' aborted uncut dub, but I don't think many people realize how terrible the TL was and how it seeped into the dub's script. There's a bunch from all 9 episodes, but this is an example:
Undead Unluck 201: I joked with others about going 200+ chapters without a game of shiritori appearing—till now. The word Lan uses for "shiritori" here is not the usual 尻取り ("end grab") but 死理取り ("death rule grab") so I've reflected that whenever it's referenced. 1/4
In the end, is sacrificing your body for the sake of an update worth it? Should these men and women be forced to fight this survival match to stay in their respective magazines? It sounds preposterous, but more often than not, this is how things go.
Gokurakugai: Since we basically dropped a big ol' batch of chapters on you guys, I guess I'll just note some things from each chapter as I see them. I also don't want to get too spoilery since the chapters just dropped, so I'll make things brief.
Hey there, amigos! I'm going to be translating this little title! It's filled with beautiful art, a lot of heavy themes, and has a lot to look forward to, so pick it up when it drops this Fall!
Announcement: How do you kill a god? Thirty years after gods invaded Japan and reduced it to rubble and ash, Tokinaga and Waka are determined to find the answer. After God, by Sumi Eno, releases Fall 2024.
A little thing I made explaining the thought process I have going into ルビ (rubi letters/furigana) that change the meaning of the base sentence. This is by no means a hard rule (as is most TL) but this is just one way of going about it!
What's up, amigos? I'm handling the translation for Gokurakugai and the excitement levels are through the roof. Check out Yuto Sano-sensei's excellent paranormal manga tomorrow and enjoy.
🚨 NEW SERIES ALERT! 🚨
Gokurakugai by Yuto Sano starts this Thursday! Professional troubleshooters will take on any case—if the price is right! Read it FREE from the official source!
