@Boenau
How do you do 3 miles in the rain or snow?
Or with kids?
Or with grocery or even Costco purchases?
Bikes are nice for certain things. Cars are better for most other scenarios.
Moreover, most US cities were build around cars, not bikes. Can’t just mandate them.
Bicycles are really useful for covering short distances in short times.
Trains are really useful for covering long distances in short times.
Hope this helps.
SUV's should be taxed out of existence (like France is doing) or at least completely banned from urban areas.
There is simply no need for them in 99% of situations. All they do is make the lives of everyone that is not in an SUV, worse.
@but_cyclists
All SUV drivers? I drive an SUV which has a better vulnerable road user NCAP rating than many small cars. I always give plenty of room to cyclists, and it's electric so doesn't pollute. What's not to like?
Your regular reminder that replacing a regular lane with a cycle lane does not reduce road capacity, it massively increases it, because single occupancy vehicles are the least space-efficient form of transport.
You just can't take advantage of that capacity increase in your SUV.
@guidoacasa
@telesyros
"Locals unhappy with plan to halve capacity of the A103 in Haringey"
Surely it's the direct opposite? A single lane for bicycles has a monumentally greater capacity than a single lane for motor vehicles.
So a cyclist, with no helmet, no protective clothing, no side/rear-view mirror, paying zero road tax, gets priority on British roads now?
Frankly, on top of all that, both overtaking drivers gave the idiot a clear 4 - 5ft of space overtaking!
Are you SERIOUS!
A lot of replies to this are ignoring the fact there are three separate incidents here. For the mentally challenged who see it as a binary choice, I will break down the situation for you with the *actual* facts about who is in the wrong.
UPSTREET: A train has collided with a car at Grove Ferry Road level crossing near Upstreet, Canterbury. No injuries fortunately. Photo: Network Rail Kent.
I'd be well in favour of bringing in some sort of "road tax" for bicycles if it was based on the actual road wear caused by the vehicle.
£10 per year for the heaviest e-bikes and £4,000,000 for an SUV is definitely a good starting point, with an emissions-based multiplier too.
Here’s the splendid Road Damage Calculator that
@cargobikeben
shared earlier. Your council needs to see this. Why are we all paying for the damage caused by SUV drivers??
"Your cargo bike is dangerous for your kids because even though you're riding in a dedicated bike lane, if a driver lost control of their car and smashed into you, your kids would be toast"
This is the most batshit insane logic against bikes I've ever read.
@DCTrikeMom
@cedric_elliot
You have your children in a modified wheel barrel on a public road. If there was an instance that a car lost control and made contact with your bike, what mechanism is in place that prevents your children from being tossed out of that basket like a bag of potato’s?
Incident 1:
The car driver cuts in front of the cyclist without indicating while the cyclist has priority in their lane. This is 100% the driver's fault and it's poor driving - potentially on very the low end of the scale for careless driving - although low risk of harm.
Insurance doesn't go towards roads you raging twonk. It goes towards fixing shit when you crash your car into it.
It's mandatory for motor vehicles because if you even slightly fuck up in your car, you can destroy a house, and most people can't afford to pay to rebuild a house.
Utterly bizarre that you can get caught driving a 2 tonne car at 100mph in a 50mph zone and still be allowed to drive away afterwards, but if you get caught riding a privately owned 15kg e-scooter at 12mph the police will seize and crush it.
#EdinburghRP
were on the A90 Keeping People Safe and found these 2 driver massively in excess of the 50mph speed limit.
Both been reported to the PF for speeding and one for no licence, no insurance and no MOT.
#DriveSMART
#KeepingPeopleSafe
Drivers: "cyclists must militantly obey all of the same rules as drivers. No exceptions!"
Meanwhile, drivers: "here's how to turn off the annoying chime that warns you every time you're breaking the law"
Incident 3:
As a result of the car driver braking, the cyclist applies too much front brake and unintentionally dismounts over their handlebars. This is 100% the cyclist's fault because, regardless of anything previously, they were not maintaining a sufficient stopping distance.
So often, the "cyclists should pay {
tax/insurance/MOT/number plates}" argument comes down to a resentment that running and maintaining a car is expensive while running and maintaing a bicycle is not.
"It's not fair that drivers have to pay loads, therefore cyclists should too"
Your frequent reminder that e-bikes don't tend to replace bicycle journeys - they tend to replace car journeys.
They are the biggest enabler of active travel in generations.
E-bikes are an absolute game changer.
On the e-bike I can put in moderate effort, about 150-200 watts, while the bike puts in 400-500 watts, and I make it up this steep hill without breaking a sweat or even needing to get out of the saddle.
Incident 2:
The van driver cuts in front of the car driver. This is 100% the van driver's fault and again is poor driving, although well below the threshold for careless driving considering the distances and low speeds.
Hard-working drivers trying to recreate what they saw on the TV adverts in their own SUV's and finding out that actually they can't drive through a river.
Drivers: "why would you cycle without a helmet? That's sooo dangerous!
Cyclists: "why's it dangerous"
Drivers: "you could get hit by a car!"
Cyclists: "who is driving the cars and why would they hit us?"
Drivers: ...
It's so hard for Americans who only drive to be intellectually curious about helmet-free bicycling. It's easier to just insist on believing helmets should be a top priority.
Reasons why nobody should ever bother using a bicycle for any journey:
1) sometimes it's cold
2) sometimes it rains
3) some people have arthritis in their spine
Hi Charlotte, if the people that didn't actually need to drive everywhere decided to use alternative methods e.g. public transport or active travel, it would reduce the number of vehicles on the road, freeing up space and making traffic move faster for the plumbers and builders.
The cycling lobby’s takeover of transport policy is one of the most insane things in British politics. We have plumbers and builders stuck in traffic instead of earning. Thank “Active Travel” loons like
@willnorman
- who thinks everyone can hop on two wheels. Destroying economy!
Imagine if cars took this level of care when passing a person on a bicycle. But no, they don't, because you can hit flesh and blood without damaging your paintwork
Today while driving I was behind a group of cyclists climbing a steep hill for about 90 seconds as it wasn't safe to overtake on the blind bend. At the top of the hill they all pulled to the side to let the line of cars pass.
They all thanked me, and my day wasn't ruined either.
A reminder that the vast majority of modern traffic control infrastructure exists solely because of the danger motor vehicles present when they come into conflict with anything else, including each other.
Cycling works pretty well without any of it.
American drivers cannot fathom the idea that someone on a bicycle might actually have legal priority over their F-250 in some situations.
Thankfully in the UK, we spell this out very clearly, although a lot of people still don't seem to get it.
If he wants a level playing field then surely all motor vehicles will have a maximum motor power of 250W which cuts off after 15mph?
Because at the moment, cars have a huge advantage when it comes to things like crashing through brick walls and killing children.
I'm gonna wager that a cardiologist probably can afford a car. People don't ride bicycles just because they're poor.
Hopefully one day you'll grow up and realise that.
On a side note: paying more tax doesn't give you more priority on the road. There's a hierarchy of road users and cyclists are above all types of motor vehicles.
The car in this video is also a Toyota Prius hybrid which is not currently subject to vehicle tax in the UK.
It's fascinating how incredibly triggered American drivers get when they see anything whatsoever that may inconvenience a driver, even if it does not affect them personally
Crazy that you can park any sort of vehicle on your driveway without any form of permission, but you can't put up a small shed to securely store a few bikes.
Solution: buy a shit old van, park it on your driveway, and store the bikes inside. Easy.
Family argues "storing bikes in an easy-to-reach secure location helps to encourage people to cycle more often", but is told to remove the "disorderly form of development" by the council as it is "visual clutter" and "would set an undesirable precedent"
I usually wear a bright green reflective jacket when cycling.
Not so that people can more easily see me, but so there's one less way I can be blamed when someone with their head buried in their phone inevitably drives into me.
140 mile round trip to Sheffield & back to drop off a letter
God i love my EV
People think you can’t go anywhere in them but i think they give you more freedom
That trip would have cost me £2.50 in fuel today
In my Diesel it probably would have cost £20 i wouldn’t have done it
The bollards on one side of Fye Bridge have been absolutely destroyed by a driver.
A badly damaged Silver Mercedes-Benz Estate has been found and the driver is sought.
We need to do so much more to prevent our streets being used as racetracks.
@worldofaeriels
I don't see why we don't line every single pavement and cycle lane with them. It would massively reduce the number of pedestrians and cyclists killed by cars each year.
Another trained and licensed driver loses control of their vehicle while driving in a straight line, collides with pedestrians on a pavement and destroys a lamp post.

@pedalmeapp
Good point on "home brew" bikes, but what type-approval, Euro-NCAP, safety trials, sightline analysis, stopping distance measurement or risk assessments has this 👇 abomination undergone?
The staggering irony of someone transporting a single person in a massive SUV that occupies 10m² of road space telling someone on a bicycle that occupies 1.5m² of road space that they're hogging the road
On my ride to work today, I took the lane on Lincoln Blvd for 15 seconds because there was a shitload of glass in the shoulder. When I swung back into the shoulder this nice lady driving a Q7 with no passengers rolled down her window and yelled I should stop hogging the road.
Entitled: a group of people on bikes "taking over" a few quiet roads for 2 hours late in the evening once a month
Not entitled: drivers who have unimpeded use of those roads for the other 728 hours per month moaning about the people on bikes delaying them by 4 minutes
Having the audacity to ride a bicycle on a road = entitled.
Going to court because you crashed your SUV while drunk and fled the scene, receiving a long disqualification and then *immediately* driving again = hard-working driver, honest mistake etc.
Another cyclist with no licence, road tax, insurance, MOT, number plate, helmet, high vis, identification, or training of any kind, has crashed their bicycle into a house 🙄
This may come as a surprise to you but the vast majority of adult cyclists also drive.
Just like me, most of them aren't anti-car. They're anti- bad drivers.
90% of the drivers I encounter are fine, but the 10% could end my life in an instant, and that's the issue.
@ediz1975
@Don_Specifico
The cult are not really into cycling as a means of getting around, or as pleasure. For them their bikes are a pulpit from which to preach about their moral superiority and to make war on those of us who drive. Really they're Environmentalists who just hate ordinary people.
This is American automobile-dependence logic.
You finance a massive, unnecessary truck that you can't afford, and when the bank comes to repossess it, you proclaim "nobody's taking this truck" and then immediately destroy the truck and seven other cars.
Somehow, cyclists riding around Regent's Park at 29mph is a big enough problem that action gets taken to prevent it, yet people can drive at 192mph on a motorway and absolutely nothing gets done to prevent it.
Why can we buy cars capable of 3x the speed limit?
"by far the biggest risk to cyclists is simply falling off"
Nope, not even close. Rider-only collisions account for 16% of fatalities and 4% of all injuries .
45% of fatalities and 77% of all injuries are collisions involving one car. That's "by far" the biggest risk.
There is no amount of money anyone could pay me which would make me want to do a 500 mile round trip commute every day unless it was on a train that did it in <1 hour.
The fact that people are DRIVING this is fucking insane and far from normal. In fact, it's actually dangerous.
@philippaforrest
I think theirs a middle ground. I travel to and from London 5 times a week, around 500 miles a day. Unfortunately an electric vehicle would add a lot of time onto an already long journey due to stops to re charge. To do this trip every now and again would be ok but not often
A significant number of people took up cycling during the COVID pandemic because motor vehicle traffic virtually evaporated and it was far safer and more pleasant to cycle on the roads when they were quiet.
This graph perfectly shows why more safe cycle infrastructure is needed.
.
@Chris_Boardman
used to demand government publish the statistics of cycling. He now runs a governmental body that doesn’t even retweet DfT statistics. Here from last week’s cycling index release.
Very confusing that cyclists do not have priority over motor traffic at a crossing that is directly next to and parallel to a zebra crossing where pedestrians do have priority over motor traffic.
Who designs this crap?
Just cycled through the new De Beauvoir bike crossing today.
Dare I say it, the old crossing felt slightly safer. The signage was unclear, and it seemed like cars have the right of way.
Is that correct?
@mcglucko
@JulieLovesFluff
You don’t have to pay a penny to ride a bike on the road . But Every motorists has to pay insurance , nearly all motorists has to pay a road tax .
"Yeah but at least I stay dry and warm in my car"
Great, but while it takes you 45 minutes to get 4km to work, I've cycled there in 10 minutes at a fraction of the cost, wearing a £50 waterproof jacket and trousers, and the little bit of water that got through has already dried.
What a miserable way of commuting driving is. Imagine going through this everyday when there is a faster and more efficient way of travel available. If only Galway city council had the will to build safe active travel infrastructure instead making the lives of drivers a misery.
1) it wasn't an accident. The driver drove into the cyclist.
2) there is no mandatory clothing for cycling, so there is no possible way you can be held liable for a collision based on what you were wearing.
How do people come up with this shit?
@DarwinianAscent
@but_cyclists
Not sure if you aware but, you could be held liable in court if your outfit was not conspicuous during the accident, hence my question. I hate this out of context videos where we judge without all the information.
It's a good thing the comments are turned off here because I'm sure they'd otherwise be full of people saying that the cyclist should be in prison for committing this heinous crime.
This cyclist, in a split-second decision chose safety - to ride on the pavement, over danger - to ride in front of a tipper truck.
Hackney Council's Pembury design will do nothing to improve this situation.
Our alternate design does not have cyclists mixing with motor traffic.
I've always wondered why some motorcyclists pay actual money to make their bike louder, and then ride it around residential areas as loudly as possible in the middle of the night.
Do they absolutely hate everyone? Or are they just trying to make everyone hate them?
Genuine question for motorcyclists.
When your bike is really loud, and we all turn around and look at you... why do you think we're looking at you? Do you think we're impressed?
You realise 99% of us are just really annoyed at your narcissistic noise pollution, right?
Can't afford a bike which could cost as little as £300 (or even less second hand) and virtually nothing to maintain or run, but they can afford £1000+ per year to maintain and run a car?
Almost half of British people can’t afford to buy a bike – and a quarter say it would take at least six months to save for one, new research for Cycle to Work Day finds
Other barriers include feeling like they don’t “fit the bill” of a cyclist

High viz? Completely fucking irrelevant.
If you can't see a cyclist directly in front of you in broad daylight you definitely should not be driving.
What the fuck.
@but_cyclists
Few things:
Is he wearing a high viz?
Why not cycling close to the curb?
Did he make an eye contact with the driver?
Forget the rules. They will not save your life. When cycling, you should expect people not to follow them, and its your life at stake.
Insurance isn't mandatory for bicycles, but like many others, I have it anyway - mainly due to the value of my bike, but the third party component was only £15 extra.
When cyclists start causing damage like this, I will fully support mandatory third party insurance for cycles.
