I've just released Doggerland, you can find it at the link in my bio. I have been meaning to write about ancient theories of geography for a while. Doggerland is a catalogue poem, a hand-made encyclopedia, and a fragmentary speculative geography.

I really do not see any reason to make the conceptual leap of saying ‘ancient people did not have an inner sense like ours’ when what the evidence suggests is that they had a different sense of how to *express* interiority. any assertions beyond that are unfounded

It's actually well sustained by many scholars that the ancients did not have an inner sense similar to ours, that the subject of ancient greece was otherwise individuated. JP Vernant argues that there is no inner-monolog in the Iliad. Achilles for example, when he stops himself

monster hunter was my favourite series as a kid and critics savaged those games for a decade for daring to create a lifeworld through gameplay - having to cook your own meat, track monsters etc. only came around when dark souls exploded and audiences forced them to change tracks

you are incapable of building a worldview in which other people are anything other than mechanistic drones and you think YOU’RE the one operating on a higher plane of consciousness

these people have the world they want and they're still mad about it. the humanities in terminal decline, barely any jobs in history and lit departments, a proudly illiterate culture. will they be satisfied when no one is allowed to do anything they don't personally sign off on?

what I fear Gen Z will never understand if they don't drink is that there's a level of inner peace you can only gain after having had a long frustrating day of work followed by precisely three drinks with friends, it's a form of zen only otherwise reached though firm religion

I wonder how easy it would be to convince people of the existence of a non-existent ancient text. like say a summary of it is on the verso side of a manuscript of strabo, write an article referencing it somewhere small and get it published, work your way up to a wikipedia article

I get where this is coming from but Liszt had women throwing their pantaloons at him and pouring his coffee dregs into glass vials in 1842. the queen personally requested that sherlock holmes be brought back after he was killed off. the extremes of fan culture are old.

developing a half-baked theory that modern fan culture is fueled partially by the decline of third locations; the intense, almost cultish relationships within them stems from a yearning for communal experiences and connections that seem increasingly rare in physical space

tunnels are now decisively in. subterranean maps of being, a new cartography of the infernal, the absence of compasses or the light of day - boring machines which invert the imperative to climb towards the sun - abyssal guerillas slouching by candlelight

its funny how literally the "adult-centric YA" thing takes the Adorno quip that the ideal American consumer is an 11 year old adult

@jessiechrxst tbf I have to believe they’re people who have not had complicated long term relationships with someone because once you repeat a topic of argument over and over again it does indeed start to sound this precise and rehearsed!

obviously, ancient people would have had distinct interiorities to some extent. but arguments which claim we are underestimating the level of difference basically claim that differences in expression are hylomorphic with differences in thought. are we sure about that?

@nodrectionhome this is an image of a commoner receiving the ‘Royal Touch’, which is said to cure disease thus demonstrating the divine legitimacy of the king. hope that guy on the right knows how lucky he is
