It's #PubDay for THE HOME I WORKED TO MAKE! Recording Syrians' stories has been the honor of my life. The book “is a testament to the resilience of the survivors of war in the face of unspeakable loss” ( @BookRiot ). It's also about the meaning of home.

When I began interviewing Syrians 6 years ago, again and again people told me that if I really wanted to understand Syria, I needed to read "The Shell." I read it, and understood what they meant. Read it and you will, too.

"The Shell" by Mustafa Khalifa. Many of those who read Khalifa's novel cannot tell whether it is an autobiography or fiction for it is impossible to tell fiction from reality in Syria. This novel stands out as one of the most powerful testimonies on the Assad's prisons.

Today Palestinians join a general strike, as they did for 6 months in 1936. Today is part of a tradition of more than 100 years of protest against colonialism & dispossession. More than 100 years of Palestinians acting together to refuse national erasure. #PalestineOnStrike

Tragic story from Denmark. Syrian refugee Akram Bathiesh dies of a heart attack after receiving the decision of the Danish authorities to withdraw his residence permit and asylum status and give him a month to leave Denmark to Syria.

Hats off to you @Loubnamrie : you started over, but you never stopped. Your work bringing Syrian voices to the English-reading world is essential. No one can say that he/she "doesn't know" about what's happening in Syria. No one has an excuse for not acting in solidarity now.

Working on this piece was mentally exhausting. Interviewing people whose homes I spent time in with their families makes me resent the fact that I was able to escape, to flee, to start over, while they are still there, left behind. Life is not fair.

Just stumbled on a picture of a Syrian guy who was released from Sednaya prison a few weeks ago and doesn't know who he is anymore. His picture is being shared in the hopes someone 'claims' him. The kind of thing Syrians don't share as news because it's somehow 'normal.'
