Residents cheering & banging pots from roofs, balconies, stoops. Cops drove far in front of march & walked behind it. More & more people joined as it went thru neighborhoods.
This duo, Fidel Mitchell, 56, & Tiffany dickens, 27, were at Beds Thai for Tiffany‘s bday. I asked Fidel who he was thanking. “Gonna be honest w/u...these white people for helping us” - bc they usually don’t. (He put it more indulgently than that)
Hearing anger, sadness, disbelief from Arab contacts across the region tonight. Common refrain: Trump's Jerusalem move kills any pretense that the US could be an honest broker in negotiations with Israel.

Here's Ivanka Trump equating the Arabic language w/terrorism. From a revealing piece by childhood friend

Marie Colvin was many journalists' hero. She risked her life countless times, over decades, to expose war crimes and abuses of power by forces of every political stripe, from Sri Lanka to Gaza to Iraq to Syria, where she was killed. /1
New court papers contend top Syrian security officials deliberately tracked & killed journalist Marie Colvin in 2012, part of broad policy targeting journalists & others exposing their violent crackdown.

It’s not the outrage that’s upsetting. What’s upsetting is “I’ve never seen anything like this” (& equating that w/“nothing like this has happened recently.”) If you haven’t seen it, you didn’t follow our coverage of Aleppo & Homs (& Raqqa & Mosul for that matter).
Sigh. I raise Aleppo once again. If I was Syrian, I’d be pretty upset at the outrage today. Where was this all when the Russian Air Force killed thousands? Fully documented btw..NY Times has transcripts of Russian pilots…
Imagine the coronavirus crisis happening after you’d already been under bombing for 8-9 years & you were living in a cramped tent without running water. Syria

The miracle of US mail—you could mail a letter anywhere & it would surely arrive—was 1 selling point we told our kids re: uprooting them from Beirut. Like parks, public libraries, reliable tap water, we explained,

would introduce them to a “real, functioning state.” 🧐 🇺🇸
After watching this live interview by New Zealand journo

The smear going around internet that Parkland school shooting survivors are not real students but “crisis actors” is identical, even in wording, to a campaign claiming Syrian survivors of govt airstrikes and
@SyriaCivilDef
rescuers are actors staging events. Go figure.
The same people who ridicule children being murdered in Syria and Palestine will eventually ridicule children being murdered in the US. This shit always comes home.
#opDeathEaters
And as I contemplate bringing my kids back to the US after six years, I think that along with the good things - cleaner water, air, food; public libraries & parks; functioning institutions (more or less) - I'll be more worried about guns on a personal level than I was in Beirut.
In fairness we - journalists like
@LizSly
- and especially Syrians who risked lives to document this & many other techniques now being reused in Ukraine - have been filling in the world for a decade and more.

So much volunteerism in Lebanon to help clean up, treat the injured, restore historic buildings, raise money for those who can't afford to fix windows, etc. But people, and this special city, deserve better than an absent/negligent gov't & indifferent world.

My kids, 10 & almost 13, echoed what a lot of other US kids have been quoted as saying: Although yesterday was scary, it wasn't as weird to them as it was to us, because they've seen a steady rise in unpredictable chaos for as long as they've been aware of politics.
"I don't feel sorry for congress at all. Oh, I'm sorry, did you have to hide under your desk because of guns? Wah wah wah. I've only had to do that six times since kindergarten. School is terrifying. Maybe now they'll pass gun reform." - one of my 9th grade students, today

Today hundreds of my

Today, 250+ Guild members signed up to attend today’s contract negotiation session to observe bargaining over wages, healthcare, return to office and more. The company’s response: they refused to show & canceled the meeting.

One everyday misery in torture prisons run by Syrian & other repressive states is packing cells so tight that inmates can't lie down at once. (Not equating border jails to places where sadistic torture is routine, but no way to read this w/o picturing Syria & comparing.)
“They put the tactical stack together in a very orderly way.”
The tactical stack. That’s when they line up along a wall to breach a door & “clear a room.” I’ve seen a lot of those, in Fallujah, in Ramadi. I guess even some orderly ones. 40 seconds. MAYbe 4 minutes. Not 40 min.

But the point is, leaving the US will make you realize how strange, interplanetarily strange, people in other countries find the notion that kids keep getting shot en masse in school multiple times per year.
What struck me about observing in close proximity is how difficult it is becoming – to tell a Taliban fighter and a western soldier apart – partly because of the fatigues, equipment, and the American weapons.
I'm so happy about this new beat! Environment and climate change is the story of the century for NYC, and for the world's other great cities - literally: Will they be here in 100 years, or even 50? Hit me up with your ideas, beefs, sources and stories, and accounts to follow.
