Dear new undergrads. You really really are still a Christian if you disagree with the rhetoric of your Christian Union. You can be liberal, progressive, confident and proud of your faith with SCM.
SCM Welcome Week is taking place from 21st - 25th Sep, and we're stoked for it! Here's the official programme - you're welcome to come to as much or as little as you'd like. You can find all of the events over on our Facebook page:
⭐️Please share!⭐️
I'm on their website now, so I guess it's time for an announcement!
I'll be joining the super team at
@RiponCuddesdon
in September as Tutor in Theology 🎉
Gutted to leave Edinburgh but very much looking forward to London/Oxford life!
I sent a proposal to
@SCM_Press
honestly on a whim, because who would publish the opinions of me and a bunch of other young Christians angry at the church? Let alone with the widsom of
@davewalker
@AnthonyGReddie
& endorsed by
@ChineMcDonald
🎉
My chapter about the history of the UK churches' mission to the working classes has been accepted in the forthcoming Routeledge International Handbook of Sociology and Christianity 🔥
Thank goodness 🎉🙏 how privileged I have been to study such a wonderful topic with such a dedicated supervisor. Thank you
@CSWCEdinburgh
and for the extra push from the examiners.
Ahhh I just had an email from one of the most influential queer/feminist theologians calling my/our edited book a 'great contribution' 🥺. How does one academically say 'I love you, you're so cool'?
Super thrilled to share that my essay "Structural Flourishing or Life Flourishing? A Critical Response to the Popular Tool of Receptive Ecumenism" has come first place for the
@Reformedcomunio
Lombard Prize. It'll be published in the next Reformed World!
Spotted another faith based unpaid internship for a young person today.
Reminder: this isn't only exploitation by you but also reduces your own field of talent where only comfortable middle-class ppl can apply and develop their careers & thus only worsening the class-skills gap
#NotAllMen
is giving me
#AllLivesMatter
vibes. Why do we feel the need to say that? It could be all men. Our patriarchal structures normalize sexual misconduct towards women. A 'nice' man can still be a threat.
#AllMen
need to read feminist studies and check their behaviour.
As always my Twitter has been taken over by
#AnglicanTwitter
but the *forced?* retraction of
@JarelRB
's wonderful and insightful tweet with such a condescending replacement is vile. It feels like he's been put on the naughty step. A church should not treat honesty with such shame
Happy 1yr anniversary bookie book. When I edited you I was full of energy and optimism. Now I am buried in PhD gasping for thoughts that aren't about 20th century mission.
The only thing that could have made being a Theology Slam finalist better is being chosen among
@alex_clareyoung
🎉 also a
@cwmission
PhD Candidate and
@UnitedReformed
minister! And I'm so looking forward to hearing the other two finalists' talks 👏👏👏
Thank you so much
@HeartEdge_
and
@AzariahAnglican
for sharing a section of 'Young, Woke, Christian' in your newsletter this morning! And also for highlighting it is now available for pre-order 🎉
This network is the best!
@SCM_Press
I just saw a tweet warning young Christians not to be so forthright with their opinions. So, we shouldn't be like Bonhoeffer, John Mott, Cheng Jingyi, or V.S Azariah who in their 20's and 30's began pushing the ecumenical and missionary movement to new dimensions?
Great to share the
@CSWCEdinburgh
seminar with Jun today, chaired by Prof. Stanley! My paper was entitled 'The Changed Heart of the General Secretary Bernard Thorogood in the Lead Up to the 1977 Restructure of the Council for World Mission'
@cwmission
We’ve already stopped overseas students from bringing family members to the UK from 2024.
And we’re increasing the fees migrants have to pay to use the NHS.
Together, we will deliver the biggest reduction in net migration on record.
Do we also condemn Israeli soldiers killing and imprisoning Palestinian children? The world's largest open air prison which is Gaza? The cutting off of (the little) electricity Gaza has by Israel which will murder innocent people living in the area?
And an academic job, that is all about church stuff, teaching incredible students, in a beautiful place, where I can live with my lovely partner, and have excellent and supportive colleagues, and not worry about short term contracts/longevity? Yup. The dream.
This time next week I'll be lying on one of Iona's beaches, after preaching in the Abbey, getting ready to spend a week with the

Yesterday morning my lovely Nan passed away. In the afternoon I went for a run and this heron stayed where it was so peacefully. Me and my Nan would always look out for herons when walking her dog every Sunday. I'm not saying it's not not a coincidence but it was powerful.
Could you imagine, like being able to go to uni, and discovering beauty and meaning in the world and yourself that isn't about money but it opens your mind to like those bigger questions?
That's unacceptable to hyper capitalism.
One in five graduates would be better off if they hadn’t gone to university.
That’s unacceptable.
So
@RishiSunak
is cracking down on rip-off university degrees and boosting skills-based learning.
Here’s how👇
I'm away with a group of Christian leaders in Jerusalem and this morning a Church of England Priest, Roman Catholic Deacon, a Redeemed Christian Church of God Minister and myself shared morning prayer. Without planning we all focused on peace, hope and unity in prayer 🙏🇺🇦🕊️

Awake, Emerging, Connected: Theologies if Justice from the Missing Generation are ready to go! They are haunting, passionate and beautiful, and the solidarity stemming from them in this dark moment of our history is giving hope.
Last minute prep for what will be an exciting conversation today in Oxford. Very grateful for a selfless bf who woke up at 6am to take me to Bristol train station 🙈

Have been feeling a bit burnt out, esp. today and yesterday but a good push day at the gym and an unexpected jam session with friends has sorted that right out 🎸
After a wonderful and busy week including CTE Forum, the book launch and 2 tutorials, this morning I'm traveling to Skye for a relaxing break with some lovely friends and bf.
GUYS my academic granddad and
@UnitedReformed
scholarly hero Professor David Thompson said that he had 'never read a book quite like Young, Woke and Christian.. and I've read many books' and then asked me a question about Ecumenism.
Dreams come true.
"God is under the rubble in Gaza. He is with the frightened and the refugees. He is in the operating room. This is our consolation. He walks with us through the valley of the shadow of death."
Where is the justice? They talk about international law. They lecture us on human rights and look down upon us as if they are superior to everyone else in terms of values and morals. I say to them, “Go away with your laws and your talk about human rights.”
idk what gospel some people- people who I thought were friends and allies are reading- but mine talks about humility and grace and ever expanding love & generosity and plainly I'm just hurt seeing it being weaponized to protect those who marginalize & hurt others through "faith"
We're called to be bold, forthright and humble in our mistakes. The church won't grow if exploration is strangled.
'Young, Woke, Christian: Listening to the Missing Generation' will be released early(ish) 2022.

@SST_Theology
! My paper will be 'Class and Coloniality in Mission: Stories of Personal Transformation that Overcame Power Imbalances' 🎉
I HATE that my department makes my friends feel unwelcome. This is not my theology and this is not acceptable academic practice. This kind of exclusivist language that "others" and shuts down humility and exploration does not belong in a Scottish uni. A
What my uni department celebrates, while claiming it's an inclusive space.

just call yourself a Christian seminary from now on and stop pretending us "unbelievers" are welcome among you.
British Christians don't just pray, protest.

Not to act is to act.'

Period poverty is another myth. There is no one in the UK who can't afford £13 per year for sanitary products. Might not be the ones they want but they will do the job.
Publish for free and review for free or you're free-riding. Academia, the most broken system of exploitation it "outs" you for not being exploited enough.
Editor rant: if you're publishing academic journal articles, you should be reviewing journal articles. Otherwise, you're just freeriding. The number of times we're getting well into double figures before 2 people say yes is causing delays and hurting fellow academics' careers.
But why is it that Ecumenical relations are only considered when it's the more conservative position/churches that will be upset? What about relations with churches that have allowed same sex marriages?

This morning I dropped a £5 note here from my pocket and a homeless man came running up to me to give it back. I asked if he would like it and he was so excited to tell me that he was going to spend it on a hot chocolate he's been craving all day 🥺

with this excellent study of Scotland's role in the slave trade. Alston has really demonstrated how "normal" highlanders contributed and benefited from Empire.
'Interrogating Whiteness in a Working Class Community' is definitely my favourite conference paper given! Thank you for letting me explore so many intersections, emotions and complexities
