Fighting exploitation by UoE ✊ Remember: The assumption that what currently exists must necessarily exist is the acid that corrodes all visionary thinking
STUDENT MEALS ON CAMPUS
SSSN and SLURP have joined forxes to provide free food for students in Edinburgh every wednesday! All students in the city are welcome, especially those who bring their own tupperware and cutlery (as we have limited utensils)
The people who successfully shut down the terf screening at UoE today wrote to SSSN and asked us to publish a statement on their behalf. We’ll put up the full statement on our website for screen readers. Link to that in the link tree.
Here is the video of UoE attempting to drown out student protest with...organ music....
truly they must be running out of ideas, which is interesting considering they havent yet tried just paying their workers fairly??
@sssn_edi
Edinburgh students at the graduation today chanted in support of the
@ucuedinburgh
strikes so well that the piano was played to tried and distract from the solidarity 👏
Massive congratulations to all the LLC students who wore a sash, dodged the doff, held up signs of solidarity with staff, and tore up their fake degrees today!! Legends ✊
SURPRISE WE'RE BACK!! Edinburgh University Students have once again reclaimed the Gordon Aikman Lecture theatre. We are holding the space to run a week of education for liberation.
Don’t cross the picket line!
Here is a short guide on why the strikes are happening and how to support them. Check out the link in our bio for more detailed info on the strikes.
@ucuedinburgh
Not only is the university complicit in Israeli colonisation and apartheid through their investments they also allow this kind of environment to exist on campus. Do Palestinian students have to accept this vile racism to exist on their own campus
@EdinburghUni
?
Tonight we disrupted an Anti-Choice Event by the pro-life society at the University of Edinburgh along with half a dozen other student groups.
A university shouldn't be a place that allows hate groups like SPUC to spread misinformation.
It takes a lot of courage to disrupt the normal running of graduation to wear a sash, dodge the doff, or proudly hold up a sign alongside your fellow students. But it is a real act of bravery to be the only person in your degree cohort to stand up and do so.
Announcement!! SSSN and friends are hard picketing Old College today in solidarity with the UCU strikes and to stand against the university's exploitation of students!
Our statement regarding our action in the Gordon Aikman lecture theatre along with Justice for Palestine and Youth in Resistance
More info to come!! Come see us on Monday 🔥
Tomorrow is the first day of the national UCU strikes! Support
@ucuedinburgh
staff on the picket lines (happening all around campus) and join the moving student picket support at Edinburgh uni!
!!BREAKING!!
Senior management has taken time out of their busy schedule of campaigning for Scottish students having to pay tuition fees, to pop us all an email about their gracious offer to return staff their wages if they simply call off all the effective parts of the MAB!🧵
It's been an amazing week of graduation ceremonies at McEwan Hall! Our Summer Graduations continue this weekend and all next week. Here's a big round of applause to all of our Summer Grads! 👏 🎉 Watch ceremony live streams ➡️

✊🏽♥️🔥Unconditional solidarity to striking staff across the country, and to
@ucuedinburgh
in particular
✊🏽♥️🔥 we're here again b/c uni management seem intent on ruining everything good about higher education.
✊🏽♥️🔥But when students stand with staff we win a better future
Thank you to everyone who was part of organising this occupation as well as everyone who came to events and stopped to chat with us over the week! It was a fantastic experience to have a space to create the education we students and staff at the university decide that we want.
Supporting stiking staff today by decorating George Square! Management seems to think they can get away with pretending the strikes aren't happening, so we're here to help remind them ✊✊
#ucuRISING
After an incredible week spent in the reclaimed Gordon Aikman lecture theatre, we have cleaned and left the building yesterday in the afternoon. We are so, so thankful for everyone who has attended events or simply stopped to chat with us for a moment, (1/3)
🚨BREAKING 🚨
Confirmed that the basis for pension cuts is none existent. There are simply no grounds for this attack on the material security of our wonderful staff.
What can we do for UCU?
1) Lobby our VC to revoke the cuts
2) Sign the emergency UCU petition
(links in QT)
🚨‼️ BREAKING: USS trustees have confirmed that the basis for cuts has disappeared, as assets hit £88bn.
We need you to urgently:
❌ Lobby your VC to ask UUK to revoke the cuts:
📝 Sign the emergency petition to the JNC chair:
This morning we occupied the historic McEwan hall where UoE was setting up a post graduate fair on the very first strike day.
We’ve just had the confirmation from head of security that the fair is now cancelled. Victory to the strikers!
#DontCrossAnyPicketLine
Uni management thinks business can go on as normal while their workers and students struggle under the cost of living crisis, decreasing pensions, overwork and discrimination. We don’t think that’s just. Do you?
#ucuRISING
today we delivered our demands to VC Peter Mathieson to denounce
@EdinburghUni
’s maximalist approach to the hostile environment.
✅ minimum compliance with the home office
✅no attendance monitoring on strike days
✅ no nhs surcharge and deportation of students & staff
Senior management, from Peter Mathieson to David Argyle to Lucy Evans to Colm Harmon have brought nothing but shame and disrepute to the reputation of this university. 2/
They've brought nothing but misery and pain for the staff and students who make up our beautiful Edinburgh University community.
It's time we chucked them out. /3
The decision by USS to cut pensions is abhorrent class war. Further and escalated industrial action will have our full backing. Solidarity to all staff, we love you and we're so sorry that these demons are playing games with your futures. But they don't know they're up against ✊🏽
We are the first institution to renew our status as a University of Sanctuary, reaffirming a commitment to creating a culture of inclusivity & awareness, for those seeking sanctuary, on campus and within the city. Learn more about what the status means ➡️
❤️✊🏾Students supporting striking staff is what we love to see✊🏾 ❤️
UoEdi students, come thru and give some love and solidarity for the pickets (08:00-12:30 each morning) - its an amazing educational experience
@ucuedinburgh
#OneOfUsAllOfUs
Big love and solidarity to all staff out on the picket lines this morning. We appreciate you so much and we're with you all the way. Solidarity forever ♥️✊♥️
Happy to see our UCU branch taking an unflinching stance against transphobia. Transphobia like all oppressive ideologies should not have access to a stage or a megaphone. We encourage everyone to insist on our rights, as a community, to decide what deserves a space on our campus.
Introducing staff testimonials! We've been posting a lot about the UCU's political fights but we realise that for some students, this can seem distant and unclear... so we invited tutors and lecturers to talk to us directly about their personal experiences working in academia.
Amazing to see everyone at the
@UCUScotland
rally at Holyrood! So many different workers from different industries showing up in solidarity. We will see an end to profit driven education and we will see an end to neoliberalism. Victory to the strikers!
Join us at Bristo Square, outside McEwan Hall anytime from 9:30-13:30 on Saturday the 18th (this Saturday coming) to share the anger of the student body towards the decision-making and inaction of university management 🧵
Week 9 is striking week! We will again show our support for
@EdinburghUcu
in this fight, until their demands are met. If you want to get involved, our DMs are open 🔥
SO excited to share our first batch of events at the reclaimed Gordon aikman Lecture Theatre!!! More info about all the events throughout the week here:
Come by and say hi!

Today we disrupted and shut down the Tortoise ThinkIn event on climate change in Appleton Tower along with the

,
@EdUniPandP
and
@PapuaEdinburgh
. Tortoise Media are sponsored by BP, one of the most exploitative and polluting fossil fuel companies.
Police arresting Palestine activists at a peaceful protest at Edinburgh university - who call police on to campus to curve your students rights to protest
@uniofedinburgh
We're super proud of our
@ucuedinburgh
staff, returning to the picket lines again today to demand fair working conditions, an end to structural inequalities and proper pay. Their working conditions are out learning conditions. Solidarity, love and rage ✊🏽❤️🔥
Uni management thinks business can go on as normal while their workers and students struggle under the cost of living crisis, decreasing pensions, overwork and discrimination. We don’t think that’s just. Do you?
#ucuRISING
Had a great time at the picket at the school of social and political sciences today ❤️ Absolutely horrible to hear the conditions tutors have to work under, solidarity to all the staff striking for job security and fair pay at Edi and elsewhere
#StudentStaffSolidarity
#UCUstrike
So long as the university lets this kind of things happen on campus and refuses to take a stand for freedom of expression in the context of
#Palestine
protests, we will continue to call them out on their complicity in colonialism. Simple as 🤷♀️ (1/2)
“Working into later life is now a reality for most of us” hmm I wonder why that is university of Edinburgh, what’s happening to people’s pensions that means they can’t retire as early as they used to 🧐
Working into later life is now a reality for most of us. But a longer working life doesn’t necessarily mean a healthier one. A University of Edinburgh professor wants to improve job quality and options for workers over 50. Find out more ➡️
#EdinburghImpact
We hope in the middle of employer and media backlash that workers don't forget many of us students are hugely grateful for them striking 💪
THANK YOU for fighting for just and sustainable education while VC's and politicians care about nothing but maxing out profits.
A huge thank you to the students who danced and sang with us, brought us coffee and tea, and collected for the fighting fund!!!
@sssn_edi
and all of you- YOU ARE FANTASTIC!!!
On Thursday, as over a hundred community members spontaneously gathered to stop the Home Office from conducting an immigration raid, the university voluntarily offered its parking spaces to the police cars that came as backup.
Should be blatantly obvious to all students that those with power in this sector do not give a fuck about any of us, education, or knowledge creation. Efficient profit extraction is what gets rewarded, obedience to capitalism gets you pay rises
Despite uni security’s ‘warnings’ we: didn’t die of hypothermia, didn’t cause ppl to die in a fire, didn’t stop a hypothetical ambulance from entering campus. We’re still here and showing the uni that if they think they can keep robbing their workers, they are sorely mistaken😌
🚨The university is supporting the spread of transphobic hate on campus 🚨
Join us to protest the launch of this transphobic book, 5pm outside Lecture Hall A, 40 George Square TODAY. Wear face coverings, and bring signs and flags if you have them! 🌈🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈
After smoothly reclaiming the Gordon Aikman Lecture Theatre yesterday, we received this incredibly sweet message. Our cleaners are an essential part of our community, yet so often invisible. They deserve our full support, and we humbly stand in solidarity with them.
In light of the new round of strikes coming up,
@itamark
reminds us of one of the 4 fights staff are striking over and why the battle isn't won yet, despite the inspiring growing number of strikers and student solidarity. ⭐
✊♥️🍰Food is the love language of solidarity on the picket line🍰♥️✊
Don't worry
@ucuedinburgh
, we'll keep on coming through with the biscuits and tea because students stand in full solidarity with striking staff (did you hear that
@EdinburghUni
?)

Rally, 12:30-2PM outside parliament.
We stand together with our Black students, staff and Black communities worldwide and will continue to support actions to end discrimination in all forms, including in our own institution.

🚨 The nine highest paid Vice Chancellors all run universities which are USS members.
Between them they take home £4.45 MILLION (!) every year.
While raking in millions, they are collectively refusing to give staff fair pensions and decent pay.
It's an absolute disgrace.
✊🥳End of Picket Gathering🥳✊
At 12:45 2morrow we &
@ucuedinburgh
strikers will march from Old College to the Business School. Join us at Old College, or meet us on the business school steps at 1PM to celebrate our collective strength and students-staff solidarity
