Zach Hyman is the best forechecker in the NHL in large part because of the value he places on getting first touch. His deposit strategy, his crossover acceleration and his routes, heavy stick and use of hips all combine to give him a consistent opportunity for first touch.

The importance of exits in the NHL I find is minimized by how incredibly skilled you have to be to play in the NHL. When we talk about puck skill we often only refer to it in the OZ in the moments before a goal is scored, but there are mindbending plays in exits every night

I hear a lot of how we all covet players with great "problem solving skills," I don't hear anything about coveting the players who "create problems the opponent has to solve." Growing this mindset in our players is not only fun, but invaluable in learning to dictate the game.

At times we’ve romanticized skating exits or crazy pressure escapes and there are D who believe that’s what they have to do most often. The truth is, the vast majority of the time, we just need first touch with body position and a simple pass to your partner or the W.
