A thread about having your heart broken by your local indie bookstore...
Earlier this week, I went to my local indie bookstore to introduce myself and my book. Before I even said my name, the woman working guessed my name and said someone came in looking for my book already. ๐งต
I hope one day I'm a wildly successful author and they ask me to do a signing there just so I can say no.
I understand they can't carry every book from every author that comes through the door. But it's a small town. You can at least be kind when speaking to local authors.
I have officially booked "the call" with an agent. Having been agented before, I have to say that it feels different the second time around. Last time was all blind optimism, but this time I know things. ๐
#amquerying
I tried to stay positive and asked if she'd like to keep a copy of my book to look at. She said no, she didn't need to see it.
Then she basically dismissed me.
So thankful I have my first signing in Savannah with my all-time favorite bookstore where I was actually welcomed.
I've been very open about my querying journey, and I don't want to only post good news because that's not reality.
My agent call yesterday did not go as I hoped. We are not the right fit, but better to know that now.

In today's episode of the
#amquerying
roller coaster: full request, full pass, and a call request from an agent who passed on my full recently and is reconsidering after a convo with an editor looking for a book like mine. ๐ข This looks something like progress, right? Maybe? ๐
Today is the day: I have an agent call. I am feeling all the things. I keep trying to remind myself how well this turned out 11+ years ago when I had my last agent called and ended up with my nonfiction book deal. But fiction feels so much harder!
#amquerying
#WritingCommunity
Yay for another full request while I was at a conference yesterday, plus two agent likes in a pitch contest this week! ๐ Also...agent call today. Feels like I'm getting closer!
#amquerying
Woke up to a partial request! I'm at 10 fulls and 2 partials with agents, 2 fulls and 1 partial with editors from a pitch contest and 1 full with another publisher. I'd like to believe that will lead to something for this MS!
#amquerying
She said she'd never heard of my publisher, and that I could go back to the first woman I met and see if they had time for me to schedule a signing on consignment.
Because, by this point, I'm just dying to do a signing with such a warm, welcoming place for local authors. ๐
This got far more attention than I thought it would. Thank you for all the kind messages, and for sharing your own stories.
If you want to check out Lucy and Logan's Little Free Library love story: . ๐
Signing my contract for my second novel today! After many years of writing and querying, I signed two book deals this year! ๐ This second one is particularly special because it had a rough go on submission in 2020 due to bad timing and other uncontrollable circumstances.
๐VAGUE PUBLISHING TWEET๐
Dream come true sort of news coming soon!โค๏ธLucy and Logan and their You've Got Mail style Little Free Library romance are in such great hands.
I can't believe I can't scream it from the rooftops, because I'm literally ready to burst. Stay tuned . . .
She said they don't stock self-published authors. I said that I'm traditionally published and handed her a sell sheet.
With barely a glance, she said, "This doesn't look traditionally published to me."
When I got over my shock, I asked why it didn't and assured her it is.
That seems like a good start, right? She told me to come back and bring a copy of my book to another woman who handles purchasing. I did so today while an author friend was there signing.
The woman cut me off before I could even hand her my book. ๐งต
I never answer calls from unknown numbers, but I had one today from New York. My first thought was, what if it's a literary agent? So, I answered.
Telemarketer. ๐คฆ๐ผโโ๏ธ
#amquerying
Regardless of whether my agent call this week leads to an offer, I do feel really confident in my query and first pages due to the number of full requests (10 so far).
For the
#amquerying
crowd, I highly recommend reading the
@QueryShark
archives and a
@MSWLMA
agent meeting.
Finishing up an R&R for an agent today...and just got a call request from a different agent. Back on the roller coaster after my very kind pass on a full last night! ๐ข

@blktinabelcher
Thank you for saying that. It costs nothing to just be kind. I've been going to this bookstore since I was a kid, and now she's ruined it for me.
I'm grading assignments today for my journalism classes I teach, and the amount of AI being used is really frustrating. I'm already working on some new assignments that are more AI-proof. But I don't understand wanting to be a writer and then not doing the writing.
I just got the most wonderful email from an agent who had my full with SO many kind words about my voice and the MS I
#amquerying
...and the nicest pass. She has another book that's too similar. ๐ญ I thought form passes were rough, but this might have been harder. But also better.
When I wrote this thread, I had no idea how much love you all would send me. Now I'm glad she gave me a reason to get introduced to so many of you!! It was a blessing in disguise. โค๏ธ You all made my day today!
In my debut, the main characters are exchanging books in a Little Free Library (with cute anonymous notes to each other), and I *really* wanted to name a real book and use some quotes from it. Finally got permission from the publisher today!! ๐ฅ So excited!
I haven't talked much lately about how my
#amquerying
journey is going because I'm at the stage where I don't feel like I can talk as openly or publicly. However, I turned down an agent offer today, and I just want to say how incredibly difficult that was to do.
I am so excited to finally be able to share that I'm now represented by
@roseferrao
of
@PSLiterary
for both my fiction and nonfiction. ๐ Rose and I clicked immediately, and I feel like I gained a real teammate. Excited to go out soon with my new nonfiction sports project!
I'm at the point in my
#amquerying
journey where I can't share everything that is happening...but things are happening! It's still unfolding, but hopefully I'll have news in the coming weeks. ๐ค
Because my querying tweets have been so popular lately (and I've been through this and agented before), I've been writing a big blog post with querying advice. Putting the final touches on it this morning!

Y'all...I can finally share the news from my "vague publishing tweet" back in February! ๐ฅ
It was my dream to publish this book with
@HarpethRoad
!!
@jhaleauthor
is one of my favorite authors, and she's given me great writing advice over the years. I'm beyond excited!
We are tickled pink to announce that the fabulous
@SavvyCarlisle
will join the Harpeth Road family with her fiction debut!

One of my latest head scratching
#amquerying
stories is an agent saying she loved my first pages and to send my full...and then her assistant responding to my full to say that she can't pass it along to the agent unless I'm willing to revise just the first eight pages.
I just realized I can quit paying for QueryTracker now that I've signed with
@roseferrao
as my new agent. After 18 months of querying both my fiction and nonfiction, it still doesn't feel real!
I spent years wanting to work with
@BrynDonovan
when she was at Hallmark Publishing. When she passed on my last MS two years ago, I was devastated. However, I'm working with her as a coach and editor and realize I'm so lucky to have her now in this capacity! โฅ๏ธ
Left a copy of my new novel in a beachy-themed
@LtlFreeLibrary
on my island today to celebrate
#LFLWeek
! My main characters are falling in love via anonymous notes left in books in a Little Free Library, so it seemed only fitting. โฅ๏ธ
The MS I'm querying has:
๐ฉโโค๏ธโ๐จEnemies to lovers
๐๏ธSmall beach town
๐You've Got Mail vibes
๐The cutest Little Free Library
What about yours?

@RolphSarah
Funny thing is, my very favorite indie bookstore (in a city 2 hours away) said yes to a signing as soon as I reached out because I've shared about them on my social media for years. I'm excited for that one.
I used to own a PR agency, so I'm a bit obsessive over the marketing side of being an author. I have to say, one of the best things I did was create a Genius link for my book and add tracking tags for different promo channels so I can tell where I'm actually getting traffic from.
I spend far too much time working, and not nearly enough time out on the beach that sits one block from my house. So, today I'm working on the beach. ๐

Gorgeous pink roses from my fabulous publisher
@HarpethRoad
to celebrate my Summer 2024 debut! Can't wait to share my Little Free Library romance with you all. โฅ๏ธ
In celebration of my "vague publishing tweet" last week, I got some artwork of the Little Free Library where Lucy and Logan are falling in love via anonymous notes to each other left in books.โค๏ธ Took my inspiration from a real LFL shaped like a Victorian house!
Hey
#amquerying
crowd...this might just be the best "how I got my agent" tweet I've ever seen! Eight years later this book stuck with someone and is getting it's chance. Do. Not. Give. Up.
BIG NEWS! This past year, I was querying my 6th book, but had a lovely surprise last month.
@HerringAli
reached out, asking to see my very 1st book, a YA time travel romance. She'd read it as an intern in 2016 & loved it. Guess what? She still loves it & I JUST SIGNED WITH HER!
I've been sitting on this news for a little bit, and I'm so excited I can finally share!! I took German in high school and college, and Sunny the GSD lived in Germany her first three years, so that makes this even more fun. ๐
The agent did gift me the name of an editor she'd already spoken to who is looking for a book with a specific element from my MS. So, I have that info to give another agent or try and use on my own (it's an imprint that takes unagented submissions).
Gorgeous flowers have arrived from my publisher and my parents!
@HarpethRoad
sent their signature pink roses, and my parents sent some with favorites like hydrangeas and blue sea holly. ๐ฅฐ

Anyone else try to match their cover? I had a fab day with friends yesterday celebrating my debut! โฅ๏ธ
Grab your copy of The Library of Second Chances:
I just saw my cover for my
@HarpethRoad
debut for the first time...and you are NOT ready for how gorgeous this is!! ๐ You have until May to prepare yourself while I try not to die over the fact that I can't share it until then.
Now that I've received multiple offers both times I've queried nonfiction, one agent asked if I would consider ghostwriting proposals when she has clients who are struggling. Umm, yes! Sign me up! I'm one of those weirdos who enjoys writing proposals and querying.
#amquerying
There is a special place in heaven for editors who leave notes about what they love in your MS and not just changes or problems. I've had some lovely editors at
@harpethroad
for my debut!
#amediting
I did my first book club appearance last night, and it was SO much fun! โค๏ธ Loved getting to talk about how Heron Isle is like my real town, who I'd have play Lucy and Logan in a movie and more.
Now that I've announced my publishing deal, I need to write a new blog post on passing up my agent offers and ending my querying for now.
Also, this might mean I am re-entering the query trenches later this year when I finish editing my other MS. ๐คฆ๐ผโโ๏ธ
Sometimes, you have a lot of bad days being an author before you get to a good day, so you have to celebrate when those happen. My next summer novel was announced today, and then I had a great call on my new nonfiction project! ๐ It's a beautiful day to be an author!
I just saw my cover for my

Packing to head to Savannah tomorrow, one of my very favorite cities! โฅ๏ธ Excited to introduce seven other travel writers to it as I host a travel writing retreat there the next few days.
I always assign Hallmark actors to the main characters in my manuscripts so I can picture someone.
@brennan_elliott
is who I picked for the MMC in the MS I'm querying. Just watched Open by Christmas on Hallmark and he's totally my MMC in that movie! โค๏ธ
We are down to two weeks until my debut releases!! I'm putting together assets today for the fabulous people who've read an ARC and want to share. It's so surreal. I can't believe it's almost time to share Lucy and Logan's Little Free Library romance! โค๏ธ
Last week I had a crazy idea for a bookish podcast, and I reached out to a total stranger on IG who seemed like the perfect co-host. And...we're talking today!! This might become a real thing.
Remember when one of my local bookstores broke my heart? I walked into my other local bookstore (Story & Song) yesterday to find my book prominently displayed on a table with other new summer releases. โฅ๏ธ

Left a copy of The Library of Second Chances in a Little Free Library outside the vet's office today! โฅ๏ธ Hope someone grabs it to take to the beach this weekend.
I always cast
@hallmarkchannel
actors and actresses in my story as I'm writing. Helps me picture my characters and their convos. My current leads are
@brennan_elliott
and
@EmilieUllerup
. Wouldn't they be fun together on the screen? I loved both Cedar Cove and Chesapeake Shores.
So, back to the query trenches! I still have quite a few queries and fulls out there. Fingers crossed there's another call in the future that's the right fit! ๐ค

Yeah, I do think I'll feel better if I email the owner. I'll be respectful about it, but I think she should know. Especially since two other local authors told me they had the same experience.
After my local bookstore fiasco today, a friend reminded me the German rights to my book sold and my book will be in bookstores there. ๐ฉ๐ช Which reminded me...when I got the news, I was in NYC getting ready to eat at my fav German restaurant and snapped a photo I never shared!
I can die a happy author now. โฅ๏ธ
@elinhilderbrand
is one of my all-time favorite authors, so receiving reviews comparing my book to hers is a total author goal unlocked! I won't pretend to believe I'm anywhere near her level (yet!), but these reviews make my heart happy.
I'm writing my third MS in the past few years, and every time I think there's NO way I could fall in love with the characters and plot of the next one as much as the last one . . . but that's how I know which idea to write, because there is always one I fall in love with!
Here's an example of a question I didn't ask last time I got an agent: what happens to me if you leave your agency?
That did not happen to me with my literary agent, however, it did happen to me with my broadcast agent. I ended up stuck at an agency with an agent I didn't like.
@sunhippo1
Yeah, it's frustrating because people in town keep asking me where to get my book, and now I have to send them to Amazon because it's nowhere in town.
Reading through all the New Leaf tweets reminds me that having the wrong agent/agency is worse than not having an agent. I didn't take any of my agent offers from my last round of querying and ended up hiring an agent who is an attorney to review my contract from my publisher.
@El_King888
@bethcarter007
It seems usual to ask an author to come back and bring a copy of their book only to have the buyer refuse to even look at the book? And to both lie and basically accuse me of lying? I find it disappointing as both a local author and a lifelong customer.

My Best Friend's Wedding x Married at First Sight ๐
Best friends Darcy & Duncan go to a casting call for a reality TV show as a joke and wind up married to strangers. Now Darcy has 8 weeks to show Duncan he's married to the wrong woman.
Getting multiple offers on my new nonfiction was fun until I had to make a decision and turn down some wonderful agents. It's a good problem to have, but I've barely slept all week trying to decide by tomorrow. I know what my gut says now, but I hate turning down the others. ๐ญ
My WIP has a Married at First Sight style reality show, so I'm watching the latest season for research purposes.๐There have been 11 MAFS babies! That's 11 people in this world who wouldn't exist without this show. I've watched since Season 1 and still find that crazy!

@blktinabelcher
Yeah, I've been going back and forth on whether to email the owner. I'm pretty sure this woman is the exact same woman I had a problem with 10 years ago with my nonfiction release. I was just hoping things had changed there in the years since.
@pwheeler_agent
I queried last year in late November and early December and ended up with two agent offers in Jan-Feb, so I think it's a fine time if you're ready and the agents you're interested in are open. ๐คท๐ผโโ๏ธ
She'd already sent over a copy of the agency contact, so I was pretty sure she'd offer. I'd pictured myself emailing other agents with my full today to say I had an offer. This happened to me last time I queried, and I got a great agent. Alas, there was an unexpected twist.
I can't wait to be able to tell you all more about what's been happening. It's been equal parts exciting, confusing, stressful and amazing.๐ข I'm so grateful for the interest in this MS and can't wait to have a final outcome to share with you all who've been on this ride with me!
I am so excited to have a new book coming out with

next summer! If you loved the small town beachy vibes and quirky characters in The Library of Second Chances, then I think you'll also fall in love with Big Dune Island and its residents. ๐ด
We're over the moon to announce that we'll be bringing you a SECOND novel from the fabulous

in which a fallen star must return to her coastal hometown, bringing her fame with her, and face the man she left behind, for publication in May 2025.
I decided to order one last sticker for my swag to honor the bookstore cats in my debut (out next week!)...but I can't decide!

Having grades due for the university classes I teach tomorrow really helps keep me distracted from the fact that my debut is out in 48 hours!! It's actually nice to have something else more pressing to demand my attention and make the time go by faster. ๐
