Fighting for a Smartphone Free Childhood. Former No.10 Special Adviser on Business, Regulation and Energy Policy. Works on things that matter. Gets stuff done.
My goodness the arrogance (and the defeatism) of some senior civil servants is breathtaking.
If you want to be in charge, put yourself forward for election. Otherwise a bit more humility and respect for democracy would be in order.
The dissonance of Robert Buckland warning against a 'lurch to the right' when ~18% of population voted for a new party to the right of the Tory party is extraordinary.
Someone recently told me that Germany has the highest electricity prices in the world. I went to check and found it's wrong... we're second, one cent per kWh behind Denmark 😬 Source:
This may be the most consequential article written this year. If we did this, heavy industry would become globally competitive. Consumer bills would plummet. Energy abundance = prosperity & energy security. All that's stopping us is us.
@Sam_Dumitriu
South Korea can build nuclear reactors for 4-5x less than the UK.
But to build one in the UK, they'd have to wait at least four years before they could even lodge a planning application.
My latest on how to fix that and get nuclear built faster.
A year ago today, I finally had confirmation that I'd lost my job in the No.10 Policy Unit - by reading a tweet announcing my successor as special advisor on energy. Politics, hey?
I'm baffled by those who don't see a connection between gender indoctrination in schools and Tavistock, between critical race theory and the implosion of policing (witness West Yorkshire).
More than 100 people
@SaveTheParish
Parliamentary event.
The disdain & indifference of
@churchofengland
to people, place and parish is tragic. The CoE is driving its own destruction. And we are all the poorer for it.
@suzanne_moore
You're asking why music writers don't share your views and I'm offering my opinion. They don't want to have to share a byline with Nick Timothy, Richard Littlejohn or Douglas Murray. It's as simple as that.
This us a problem across govt as a whole. Last year when in No
10, I encountered a system pretty much incaple of thinking ahead or acting stategically. See: energy costs or regulatory burden.
@EdConwaySky
The problem is: the
@bankofengland
and for that matter nearly all conventional economists, DIDN’T do that.
They trusted their economic models which took no account of this stuff👆. Upshot was they totally missed the inflationary spike.
And now they’re behind the curve…
Just bizarre commentry from Al Gore. UK has reduced emissions more than any comparable country. If anything, we should be paying more attention to energy security and affordability.
The UK government 'in the pocket of fossil fuel companies', claims former US Vice President Al Gore.
But Rishi Sunak said in a press conference today that he's "proud" of the UK's climate record and other countries "look to us rightly as a leader."
There's a widespread misunderstanding of social Conservatism in 2024 by (former) MPs. Gay rights, gay marriage is thankfully mainstream. Social Conservatism is pro-family, pro-biological reality, proud of our history and opposed to identity politics.
After a big week in the Post Office scandal saga…
🚨 Scotland Yard confirms for the first time that the Post Office is under criminal investigation over the wrongful prosecution of hundreds of sub-postmasters.
👇
Sure. Do you mean lowering abortion limit to 12 weeks like much of Europe? Or perhaps become a net exporter of energy like US? Or maybe you want to improve cancer survival and health outcomes in general with a german-style insurance-based healthcare system?
The Lords amendments to the Higher Ed. (
#FreedomofSpeech
) Bill were debated in Parliament this week, and there was good news—Amendment 10, which sought to remove the right of academics to sue universities that breach their speech rights, was defeated!
Taxpayers’ money is being funnelled through the UK's Foreign Office to fund an outfit called 'The Global Disinformation Index', which is supplying advertisers with blacklists of conservative websites with the intention of having their monetization revoked.
Opportunity for reset of energy narrative. Let's
- run proper public energy campaign
- launch subsidised and co-payment energy efficiency upgrades package
- big push for demand shifting to help at peak
- use emergency legislation to unblock rapid new generation capacity
I hadn’t quite internalised how insane the Renters Reform Bill is.
It will end fixed term tenancies.
By law tenants will not be allowed to sign a contract with a landlord that includes an end date.
How on earth did this nonsense pass the Commons? How on earth will this help?
As Caroline Nokes should know, the Abortion Act of 1967 sets limits on abortion. If she thinks women should be able to abort a healthy, near-term feutus/baby she should campaign for the law to be changed.
Thread
'Caroline Nokes MP has called for a debate in Parliament on abortion laws.
MPs should "decide in the 21st Century whether we should be relying on legislation that is centuries old"

This is a sensible way forward. It allows the people of Northern Ireland consent in a way not provided by the anti-democratic backstop. We hope that people will look at it in a serious way.
Shale gas is not inconsistent with Net Zero.
We will need gas for decades. Domestic gas:
- is lower carbon than imports
- makes us less reliant in hostile foreign countries
- supports UK jobs
@CSkidmoreUK
As the former Energy Minister who signed Net Zero into law, for the sake of our environment and climate, I cannot personally vote tonight to support fracking and undermine the pledges I made at the 2019 General Election.
I am prepared to face the consequences of my decision.
She helped bring down a Prime Minister and then turned to censorship, digital stalking and making the world less safe for women and children? Quite a career, Helen.
A fantastic achievement to access world's largest - and growing- trading block. Economic as well as national security benefits. Congratulations

I have just formally signed the UK’s entry into CPTPP in Auckland, New Zealand 🤝
This will be a big boost for British businesses and open up huge opportunities and unparalleled access to a market of over 500 million people in the Indo-Pacific and beyond 🇬🇧📈
Dear recruiter on LinkedIn
No matter how many times you contact me I do not want to work on a cruise ship.
Please refine your search to exclude middle aged mothers who work in public policy.

The retreat of the church to offices and behind laptops is an abrogation of pastoral responsibilities and will only serve to further estrange people from the church
Such an
@FT
view. Let's ignore what most people think. Let's undermine those supposed to represent us. Let's get a small number of people who we think we can influence to decide stuff.
Excellent article setting out why citizens' assemblies could be the antidote to factionalism & despotism

@EngageBritain
's citizen assembly - our People's panel on Health and Care - was invaluable to surface people's insights and ideas
I 100% believe this is what lawyers said. But how is it that hundreds of other countries manage to build, extract and produce stuff more easily and quickly (and cheaply) than we do (despite being signatories to same treaties)?
- BUT legal advice from civil servants at DESNZ warned that a radical deregulation of environmental standards would be a definitive breach of international law
- UK has legal obligations to dozens of international treaties with environmental requirements
There is money. It's just not being spent on clergy.
Parishes are not a priority for
@churchofengland
. Worse than that, the church is combining parishes and cutting priests.

I lost track of the number of times I came across a truly terrible policy whilst in govt only to find out it had been brought in during short period between May resigning and leaving office.
@jamespriceglos
I'm not sure anyone who hasn't worked at the centre can truly appreciate how much power SCS holds and how little accountability. Reform is prerequisite for anything to work.
London needs a Mayor who will champion business.
Small businesses are the lifeblood of London's economy. Yet 76,730 Small Businesses in London closed in 2022, a net loss of almost 8,000.
I'm an entrepreneur. I've built businesses and as Mayor, I will support them.

Little chance Trump knew what NHS was until someone told him. Beauty of trade deals is that both sides decide what they are willing to negotiate. If we don't want to let firms compete to provide better care or cheaper drugs - that's up to us!
Reform to judicial review is ABSOLUTELY necessary. Get rid of the performative stakeholder engagement and unnecessarily burdensome environmental assessment too and we just might find a way back to prosperity.
Important development as Sir Keir Starmer suggests Labour may reform judicial review to stop the obstruction of infrastructure projects. Happy to see that the British left is beginning to rediscover its judiciary-sceptical roots

It would not be in my political interests - but it would better for everyone if Labour listened more to

Should
@iain_w_anderson
wish to end the culture war, as he claims, maybe
@stonewalluk
which he chairs should stop trying to undermine the dignity, safety and achievement of women?
It is so disappointing to see World Athletics announce a unilateral ban on trans women in track and field events.
Their own statement recognises that there are no trans women competing at an international level and that they have no specific evidence to justify the ban.
It is not bullying to tell someone something isn't good enough. It is precisely what leadership and management demands.
There may - or may not - be other allegations. But these allegations are wholly w/o merit and should be roundly derided.
Crucial point here for
@RishiSunak
&
@Conservatives
. Freeing people from the gross financial abuses of leasehold, via a switch to commonhold, allowing literally millions of people who currently feel powerless take back control over their own homes, is big-time retail politics.👍
This is why when I was in No.10 I pushed back so hard on 'extremism' and 'misinformation' as priorty harms in Online Safety Bill
@andrewdoyle_com
. Because who decides what these terms mean? Don't assume it won't be people like this.
The investigation into claims former deputy prime minister Dominic Raab bullied staff has led to a "complete breakdown" in trust between ministers and civil servants, a thinktank has said
Then the law must be changed. This is a dereliction of our duty to protect children
@10DowningStreet
Ban social transition in schools and let’s fight it out, in court if need be.
A cross-party group of lords led by Baroness Morgan, the former culture secretary, is proposing a new legally-enforced code of practice that would require social media firms to prevent "online misogyny".
Debating and interrogating policy makes it better. A broad consensus is what brought us to ruinously high and uncompetitive energy prices in this country.
An unedifying fight on Net Zero is the last thing that business wants, particularly off the back of an energy crisis.
Energy is 1 in every 48 UK jobs. We are forecast to be the bottom of the world’s biggest 8 economies for clean energy growth by 2030.
I have often pointed out that the
@bankofengland
is absolutely/alarmingly shit at comms, and Silicon Valley Bank is a perfect example. Left is FDIC in US, right is UK
@Samfr
My greater concern was talk in No.10 about incentivising new parents back into labour market. Wellbeing of babies and families should trump expanding the labour mkt. If parents want to rush back, fine. But they shouldn't be pushed.
@ProfAliceS
@Docstockk
@UKLabour
This is factual correct. When lies of omission are not sufficient, they commission straight out lies.
Fact = motherhood pay gap
@ALLIANCELGB

Very welcome news if govt has dropped plans for conversion therapy ban - which was always a trojan horse for shutting down debate about and care for mental health issues
4/6
We must now focus on a very real conversion therapy scandal that is taking place as we speak: the large number of girls, many of them lesbian, who believe that if they are gender non-conforming they may need to change their bodies with drugs and surgery.
@NadineDorries
@trussliz
We can and must better protect children online (I am perfectly relaxed with age-gating the internet).
But in no way does this justify or necessitate censoring lawful speech online.
Regulating the internet is hard. But the OSB is a deeply flawed Bill which should be amended.
Without the bravery of the police a senior British government minister would have been murdered by Hamas-supporting thugs on the streets of London today.
Disappointed that on this

The official govt. handbook for UK citizenship applicants opens with this line:
"Forget Brexit & its toxic legacy".
For the 1st time in decades, many applying for UK citizenship are now treated equally to EU citizens. It's unforgivable for govt. resources to call this "toxic".
@lehain
To be fair, I did feel uncomfortable about that. But we shouldn't hold spouses accountable for the views or jobs of the other. He has a right to a career.
