Do the anti BBC people on the right and left really look at the grim, polarised, collection of extremes that is US cable TV and think "I want something like that". The BBC isn't perfect, needs reform, but it's a great British institution and should be treasured.

For years, people said that Conservatives might never win a decent majority again. Then Boris, who turned a Labour city blue and played a decisive role in the Brexit referendum, won the biggest Tory majority for decades. He was an essential part in all of these electoral wins.

Labour MPs knew their candidate had endorsed anti-semitic social media posts, but still rushed to endorse her "because she's Labour". They then crow about "defeating the forces of division", which seemingly doesn't include anti-semitic social media posts. Some anti racism. Grim.

Iโ€™ve got an issue with this. Blaming Britain & the Empire for anti LGBT laws over 60 years after independence completely denies agency to countries that have had decades to change the laws. Itโ€™s a weird form of โ€œprogressive colonialismโ€ to think itโ€™s still the fault of Britain.

Tony Blair won North West Durham with majorities of between 13,400 and 25,000 when he was PM. Pretty unclear how he is apparently to blame for Labour losing the seat 12 years after he resigned.

Vital to learn the lessons of Labourโ€™s #GE2019 defeat. However, the answers will not be found at the door of New Labourโ€™s architects. Blairโ€™s legacy still hangs around this party like a millstone, especially in the North East. I heard it time & time again:

At some point we need to rethink the fetish for outsourcing that has overcome governments of all parties since the 1980s. If we want to empower local people, we should also empower local authorities to actually run some local services. Outsourcers seem best at winning contracts
