When teaching slavery, try to replace the term ‘slave’ with Enslaved Africans. Using the term Enslaved Africans provides more of an identity and reinforces that their culture, identity etc was stolen and robbed.
Being born in August means I have never celebrated my birthday in school.
Hated this as a child
Love it as a teacher.
Teachers born in August and late July are truly God’s favourites 😀
🚨Unpopular opinion
Having a WhatsApp group for work is invasive. That is what emails, teams or slack is for.
I don’t mind work WhatsApp groups for social reasons like planning nights out but when WhatsApp becomes the main mode of work related communication that is invasive!
My little brother had PRIVATE tuition yesterday that my mum pays for monthly. His tutor played an Oak video.
A part of me thinks this is cheeky. Or am I wrong?
I am all for using oak in lessons but to use it for private Tuition when my brother can access it for free seems 🥴
Pupil interviews are soo important as they often provide a window into the impact of our curriculum & classroom practices. They are an additional lense into the blind spots.
But asking the right questions is important .
Here are a few I have asked this year:
#ThisIsUs
is teaching me that if you don’t deal with childhood or teenage trauma/hurt it will deal with you in your adult life. Going through emotional healing is HARD, painful & a lot of work. But, it is very necessary.
I just want to make something clear, if a teacher wants to rest & relax during the holidays & do nothing edu related 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 that’s great! With that same token if a teacher wants to work and prepare for the next academic year, again that’s great! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Had a conversation with a teacher friend and he said, never stay in the same school more than 7 years.
His reasons why sounded very sound.
Do you agree with this?
Last week I was supposed to do work and make booklets but I ended up watching season 3-5 desperate housewives. So this week I decided not to deceive myself, i won’t be doing any work. My motivation and inspiration is 0. I may regret this later 😭
This year we have 50 yr 12 students opting to take history for A-level.
Testament to the hard work of my department.
We haven’t had these sorts of numbers since the old GCSE legacy paper.
But marking 50 A level essays plus year 13 is going to be 🤯
History teachers what are your favourite metaphors & analogies to assist your explanations in order to aid understanding in the introductory phase of learning?
Mine is

💫Highlight of my week has been this👇🏾
From our year 7 homework booklets.
Whoever’s idea was this thank you for sharing 🙌🏾
It’s the ‘I am proud of my son’ for me & the ‘as an African woman…’ for me 😭
The kids were also soo proud to show me 😭
Upon my return as HOD, I am really tempted to introduce a 4 week ‘empty’ enquiry for teachers to teach a period/topic of their passion/choice, after the end of year assessment otherwise known as a ‘Passion Enquiry’.
This would be positioned in summer term B for year 9’s.
Booklet is complete, link within this thread. Lots of simple highlighting tasks students can complete during form or at home. Tbh I feel it was a rushed effort 🙈

We have officially moved to teaching OCR B. So I am giving away all my resources for Edexcel. CP, EE, AW & Germany. Some lessons/ resources have been adapted from others work.
I absolutely love teaching! I love being in the classroom! I love my subject! I love my students! Best job ever! Someone asked ‘when do you most feel alive?’ part of my answer was when I’m teaching!
It matters to me. I prefer and enforce total silence (some classes a bit more difficult to enforce). I hate group work and hate chatter. Chatter is just another layer of cognitive overload, you can’t concentrate and think hard with distractions. Silence is golden 👌🏾
*** NEW POST ***
Does it matter if pupils chat as long as the work gets done?
It might, if the goal is learning something rather than just doing something.

From 11 stone to 9.11 stone. Just 11 more pounds to loose. Not where I want to be but learning to enjoy the process instead of getting frustrated at the speed. This journey has been an emotional rollercoaster but it has taught me to master discipline. Food is an addiction btw!
I must say I’m really happy with my remote teaching timetable. SLT in my school have done a fantastic job creating it. Most days I’m teaching 3 hours, with breaks in between for students and staff. It is very sustainable and therefore I feel like I am delivering my best
I made a personal promise to myself that I would never date another teacher. This may change 🤷🏾♀️
But, out of interest what does your partner/other half do in terms of career?
All my team's Migration Through Time Edexcel Resources (unit 1 -4) are now uploaded on my google drive:
Hope this helps.
Please let me know if you would like to add resources to the drive or if you have any questions.
We have updated the famous
@MrThorntonTeach
sheet for parents.
However, this year we are sending them out electronically to parents so that they have the links to various resources like model answers, quiz booklet, revision guides etc.
I really want to thank all the teachers that make the effort to make the difference in their classrooms & through their curriculums. Teachers that are trying to make a conscious effort in creating a representive curriculum. You are not unrecognised & you are appreciated!Thank U!
A thread 🧵 on my ideas/ approaches on closing the gap for our GCSE historians particularly in year 10. Within the thread you will see links to resources & examples. I wanted to write a blog post but I’m a bit lazy 🙈

Black History Month 2020: A thread 🧵👇🏾
I have been getting lots of DM’s about ideas so I thought I should share what my department plans to do this year
Really impressed with year 8’s assessments on enslaved Africans resistance during the transatlantic slave trade.
They had to refer to sources to construct their account as that is why historians do after all
As I’m in the Christmas spirit, I have just bought an experience for 2. Spa retreat along with afternoon tea. All you have to do is nominate a teacher and explain why. I really want to give it to a teacher mum or dad or an NQT. Please retweet! This has been a hard 8 weeks 😫
Random thought: schools should also provide counselling for teachers especially HOY. This should really be offered after a child discloses something horrible. Teachers should be checked on as well
My friend used to work in a school whereby teachers were NOT allowed to sit down whilst teaching.
What are your thoughts? Can you still teach effectively whilst sitting down?
@TTRadio2021
In order to ensure year 11’s are completing 60-90 minutes of revision per week they they are given weekly tasks.
On the due date students do a quiz based on their weekly revision.
February they will have a unit 2 booklet & this time parents will also sign…
A thread on homework:
During my interview with
@BarryNSmith79
he said ‘Think about all the best teachers you had in school. What did they do?’
My answer:
The were simple, no gimmicks/fluff.
Quizzes, story telling/explanations,modelling,time for practice and feedback.
But
Hi history teachers I am currently reading this book and it is sooooo good! Got in touch with the author and she has agreed to speak to us and answer any questions on this topic via zoom Monday 26th April 4.30pm. If another time is better please suggest a new time😀
Creating my ppt for the session I am leading on Monday on questioning & engagement for remote learning.
This is my first slide 🤪
Feel free to also comment below 😂
What my year 13 revision lessons look like 🧵 :
Our revision lessons are dedicated to exam Q planning/application
1. Quiz
2. Break down the exam Q
3. Establish the argument & then write a short intro in books
4. Provide A3 paper, fold into 4, each box represents a paragraph
Training that is often overlooked when starting your career in teaching:
1. How to conduct a positive/negative phone call to parents
2. Conducting parents evening
3. Making good use of data
4. The art of explanations & use of voice
In all honesty I would feel more offended if someone put me on a list just to meet a black quota, so that a list can seem more ‘diverse’ than purely because of my craft.
My motto: don’t take glory for good results, because if I do I will also have to take the plunge for bad results. These are not my grades! They are my students! As long as my students are happy so am I! 🙌🏾🙌🏾
History teachers:
@HughJRichards
in is latest blog post recommends thinking of a bank of non-setup starter activities to aid a smooth transition due to classroom changes. I have a few ideas in the picture, what are your ideas?
Birthday celebrations part 2
Being born in August means I never have to celebrate my birthday in school, it was destined I would become a teacher ...
I promise I will get back to tweeting all things edu-related & sharing resources but I’m enjoying the break way too much!
Marking my year 11’s 16 marker interpretation Q on the Munich Putsch. It is evident that they are struggling in selecting the right adjective to describe the tone of interpretations. So far I have thought of some words to assist them. Can any English or history teachers add👇🏾
Really excited to have been accepted on
@Ofstednews
future leaders programme 💃🏾🥳. I really wanted to do it last year but I didn’t get accepted. Really grateful for this opportunity.
Today Yr 12s planned:
Assess the reasons why Wolsey fell from power (20)
By placing an A at the end of each paragraph forces students to ASSESS.
As students will will typical explain or describe the reasons but forget to fulfill the command word of assess.
I actually can’t believe a year 8 wrote this!
Was the Industrial Revolution a Liberty’s Dawn?

were the new voices.Without this event I wouldn’t have come across amazing ideas shared by people I don’t normally come across on twitter! Really thankful for
@TMHistoryIcons

@SenecaLearn
for allowing new voices to be heard
Students at primary school successfully learn how to spell new words through the method: look-cover-write-check. I don’t know why we don’t use this more in secondary school.
Every time I remind students of this technique the penny drops for them

This week I did some live modelling/micro planning of the Germany paper with year 11’s. However this time I printed it out as if it was a proper exam and the kids too it soo much more seriously. Also big thanks to
@MrThorntonTeach
&
@JenHistoryCW11
for your resources.
Today I shared with my year 11’s about being fostered and having a white mum. I was teaching about Hitler’s rise to power, I don’t remember how it got there but i love lessons like these. Sometimes students can forget teachers are human to.
One thing I am learning is that curriculum is not fixed but it is evolving,and there is no such thing as a perfect curriculum.There will always be flaws. But The key ingredient to building a near enough ‘perfect’ curriculum is the willingness to always develop, grow& evolve 🧵1/3
I’m a type of person who preps and plans months in advance so all these last minute turnings/decisions has put a span in the works. I had all my resources printed out before the holiday for the first week back 😂🤣 I deffo wasted paper and ink
Thanks to
@KKNTeachLearn
I can track my marking. This is what I have marked this half term. This is amazing to as it helps me to see the patterns of my marking
Created a worksheet to help students with the narrative Q through the use of modelling. Hopefully it will help.
First box = me
Second box= We
Third box = You
Big thanks to
@MrThorntonTeach
for sharing that modelling approach!
