My book has a cover!
“Foreign in Two Homelands: Racism, Return Migration, and Turkish-German History”
Coming this summer — hardback, eBook, and open access
@CambridgeUP
@GHIWashington
My new article is published in
@CentralEuropean
, "Rethinking Central Europe as a Migration Space: From the Ottoman Empire to the Cold War and the Refugee Crisis."
Argument: Migration history requires us to include Turkey and the Ottoman Empire in our definition of Central Europe.
My book is in page proofs!!!! Coming out this summer: "Foreign in Two Homelands: Racism, Return Migration, and Turkish-German History."
Many, many thanks to
@CambridgeUP
and
@GHIWashington
. Comments below contain the book's description...
We have page proofs! In my forthcoming article in
@CentralEuropean
, I rethink the category of "Central Europe" as a
#migration
space, considering the long history of migration across the region from the Ottoman Empire through the Cold War and the Syrian refugee crisis.
I am excited and humbled to announce that I won the 2022 Chester Penn Higby Prize for my article on Turkish-German migration, awarded by the
@AHAhistorians
Modern Europe Section and
@ChicagoJournals
. You can read it for free in the Journal of Modern History (link+abstract below).
I’m happy to announce that in June I will be on a fellowship at
@zzfpotsdam
as part of the project “The Radical Right in Germany, 1945-2000.” I’ll be researching for my new book on German and American neo-Nazis.
Who else will be in Berlin in June??? Let’s meet up!
Post-tenure page proofs are so satisfying 😊 … changing Assistant Professor to Associate Professor.
My book, “Foreign in Two Homelands: Racism, Return Migration, and Turkish-German History,” is out this summer with
@CambridgeUP
.
I can finally announce it! My first book, "Foreign in Two Homelands: Racism, Return Migration, and Turkish-German History," is under contract with
@CambridgeUP
and will be published next year in the

series.

I’m very honored to receive the Outstanding Faculty Mentor Award from
@urichmond
. Truly, mentoring students’ independent research projects is the best part of my job — and I’ve been fortunate to work 1:1 with many talented and hardworking undergraduates over the years. 1/
TENURED!!!!! 😊 It’s official. Thank you so, so, so much to my colleagues at
@urichmond
and to everyone near and far who has supported me along the way. ❤️
Literally hate
@DB_Bahn
. Train has stopped 5 min from Frankfurt airport because the overheard wire is broken. Delay will be 2 hours. I am 3 hours early, but will probably miss my transatlantic flight.
I have taken 8 ICE trains in the last 6 weeks, and every one has been delayed.
My latest article, "The American Influence on German Neo-Nazism," is now published in The Journal of Holocaust Research
@JHR_Haifa
. Thank you to all the editors and contributors to this important special issue!
Flying back to the US after 6 weeks in Germany. I had a fantastic time as a Fellow at
@zzfpotsdam
as part of the project “The Radical Right in Germany 1945-2000.” The highlight was “Lebenswelten der radikalen Rechten,” which was the most useful conference I’ve ever attended.

Delighted to announce that I'll be spending 2 months in residence at the
#USHMM
as a Mandel Center Fellow in 2022, to work on my new project on Neo-Nazis in Germany and the U.S.
@HolocaustMuseum
My new article on today's German far-right politics is out in The Journal of Holocaust Research: "Antisemitism, Holocaust Denial, and Germany's Far Right: How the AfD Tiptoes around Nazism.
@JHR_Haifa
Abstract in the comments. I'm happy to send the PDF.
My talk at tomorrow’s NYU symposium is titled “Blame It on the East: Rightwing Extremism and the Problem of Cold Warrior Rhetoric in Germany.” 🇩🇪
Really excited to ponder the tricky question of “How and When the 20th Century Really Ended” (but did it end though?)
@NYUCEMS
Happy to announce that I’ve joined the editorial board of the interdisciplinary book series “Spektrum: Publications of the German Studies Association.” Feel free to reach out if you’re interested in learning more about the series!

I had a great first day as a Summer Fellow at
@zzfpotsdam
, where I’m part of the project “The Radical Right in Germany, 1945-2000.” There’s a really great community at the institute!
If I die and they do an autopsy on me, they’ll cut me open and I’ll just be filled with belegtes Brötchen because I’m too lazy to cook and that’s all I eat in this country.
Just taught my last class of the semester. I will really miss the students in my senior seminar on “Researching Genocide.” All 9 of them are dedicated and passionate historians, and we built such a close community. It was a once-in-a-career experience, and I am so grateful.
Day 1 of research trip to 🇩🇪 — I got pink eye and am now at a walk-in appt at a German doctors office. Only saving grace is that my German is so fluent that they’re not switching to English with me, and I l learned a new word: Bindehautentzündung!
Reminder / CfP — Abstracts for our edited volume on "Race and Racism in Divided Germany" are due June 15th. Feel free to email
@laurenstokes
and me if you have any questions!
Update:
@DB_Bahn
train had to drive backwards to Rüsselsheim even though we were 5 minutes away from Frankfurt airport. I missed my flight due to 2 hour delay, but was able to rebook for tomorrow. I’m at a hotel in Rüsselsheim for the night. Could be worse, at least I’m alive. 🤷🏻♀️
Tips and advice for staying motivated through the slog of staring at documents in archives?
I’ve been doing this for 10 years, but I’m more burned out than usual on this trip. And it’s only my 7th day… with a month left.
What primary source databases on post-1945 / Cold War Europe do you recommend?
I’m looking for ones that undergrads can easily research in to find sources for their term papers.

Grateful to receive the sponsorship of the

Like, what. This is 2024. As a female, am I supposed to be researching the history of My Little Pony and Easy Bake Ovens? (Though that would be interesting…) 🌸 💕 🐎
Looking forward to speaking tomorrow at Yale (virtually)! The title of my talk is “Antisemitism Across Borders: German and American Neo-Nazis, 1970s-1990s.”
TOMORROW at 4 pm,
@MichelleLKahn
discusses “Antisemitism Across Borders.”

In tracing neo-Nazism beyond German borders from the 1970s through the the 1990s, Kahn’s project provides deeper context for the global resurgence of the far right today.

Flying to Berlin and Amsterdam today for a few weeks of researching neo-Nazis ✈️—and dare I say, relaxation and enjoyment in my free time? 🇩🇪 🇳🇱
Importantly, I have lots of extra room in my suitcase for mass quantities of RitterSport chocolate.
At
@TheGSA
, I’m excited to be co-leading the Emerging Scholars Workshop for grad students w/ David Kim. I’ll also be chairing a panel with a fun tongue-twister title “Centering Peripheries in the Center of Central Europe” w/
@SmithHelmut
, Glenn Penny, Amy Millet, &

I am — again — the only woman in

Koblenz. There were no women when I was here a month ago. I am left to wonder whether any women at all have entered this reading room in the last four weeks…
So proud to see my amazing friend

Germany’s far-right AfD party is now at 18% in the polls, having won 10% of the vote at the last election. I have been saying for months that it feels like there has been a shift in everyday life. I wish I was being paranoid, but here we are.

Can anyone recommend a very short, accessible reading on the difference between history and memory for undergrads? Bonus points if it also deals with individual v. collective memory. Thanks!
Come to our panel at

Has anyone else speed-drafted 1500 words of an article that you hadn’t planned on writing? In my case, this was sparked by finding a document containing leading Holocaust denier Ernst Zündel’s (very) hot takes on the scandal of homosexuality in W. German neo-Nazism in the 1980s.
@csschmitt1
Also: remember that YOU are the expert, not them. You don’t have to agree with all their comments and you’re under no obligation to address them all in your revised article. But do keep track of which comments you choose not to address, so you can justify why in the cover letter.
@csschmitt1
Detach the comments from the readers themselves, so that it doesn’t seem personal. Make a big list or spreadsheet where you rephrase all their comments and critiques as action items, and distinguish them based on “very time intensive, “less time intensive,” and “quick fixes.”
Our Routledge Handbook of Turkey's Diasporas now has a digital presence and a wonderful cover (thank you for the original artwork,

It’s always eery to physically touch such items when researching in archives. The materiality is so powerful, but also a source of intergenerational trauma for me.

Germany’s AfD party is embedded in neo-Nazi networks that go back for decades, which I explore in the book I’m writing. This news about a secret meeting on how to expel foreigners from Germany is one of the more frightening iterations of their conspiring.

This is the closest expression of how I feel about this terrible war — as a progressive Jew and a professor who teaches the history of the Holocaust. It’s worth a read for all.
I have been struggling to articulate the complex emotions I've been feeling since Saturday morning as a Jew, a liberal/progressive, a believer that Palestinians and Jews have a right to a homeland, to safety and dignity. A thread 1/
There are 38 men (yes, I counted them) in the barbell area of this gym in Berlin — and I am the only woman.
I’m benching close to my body weight, and creepy dudes are staring at me.
