I have slowly worked on translating Mirza Ghalib's Persian masnavi on Banaras over the pandemic years. Banaras has been at the heart of India's sacred geography for long and continues to evoke different emotions in recent times. +

Indian Muslims hv shown the clergy ds nt run them. The men at Jama Masjid chose Dalit leader Azad over the so-called Shahi Imam. Watch the women of Deoband tell the clerics to go back. I got goosebumps watching this

In an increasingly narrow world where the expectation seems to be on a person to speak only of their identity, will fiction die to be replaced by autobiography?

I believe Ghalib's poetic view from the 19th-century of the city of lights might help us understand our present better, and also bring forth the Indo-Persian Ghalib better. The book is finally available for pre-order on Amazon and elsewhere. Here's the cover. +

How do you find the resources to not get angry or hurt? I feel most betrayed by childhood friends adopting soft or hard hindutva. Nothing else feels as bad.

This is what they are doing to the beautiful area between India Gate & Central Secretariat! Cutting >4000 heritage trees over 100 years old! To pave the way for a megalomaniac Sultan's new residence in a 13,500 Cr project, given emergency nod amidst a raging pandemic!

In my Introducing Urdu: History, Politics, Poetics course, students read Urdu poetry in roman, along with their English translations. Of course for most of them Hindi is a first or second/third language.
I am teaching an upper level seminar on Urdu poetry: Ongoing Mahfil. The interesting thing is that my four precious students are reading the ghazals in the Hindi script.
