I am a Tahiri purist : (a) I pronounce it Tahiri and not Tehri/Tehari and; (b) I do not add peas, carrots, ginger-garlic-onion and certainly no meat. It is simply rice and big chunks of potatoes cooked in oil/ghee and just a pinch of methi seeds, zeera, turmeric, salt, chillies.

In 2010 we donated our grandfather, Prof Ale Ahmad Suroor’s entire collection— comprising over 30,000 books, papers, documents— to the National Archives of India. Today, it was a trip down memory lane as we went to view it and an especially a poignant journey for my mother.
