I’ve run through the gamut of lower leg exercises over the years. This is the best one I’ve used to develop acceleration specific lower leg strength. With early sport specialization and less time on the playground this work has become increasing needed with today’s athletes

Once our guys reach relative strength thresholds on the tbar deadlift we shift emphasis to a split pull. Great for training foot tripod. Also suitable alternative for some that have had prior lower back issues. Yes mask is pulled down for last heavy set -nobody within 12 feet

Being able to hold trunk stack is critically important for the reverse lunge exercise to transfer to the diamond. Those who can’t stack will struggle to find their glutes on the mound and in the batters box. Pelvic rotation capabilities will be compromised. Good/bad example here

Before => After There is an appropriate time for using these tools but you can’t rely on a belt or strap to create relative motions. If you move thru orientations of the spine/pelvis they will exacerbate that. Create relative motions first then these become powerful tools.

We use a lot of triple broad jump combinations to help our athletes understand horizontal projection. I like this combo to help them feel the shin drop. Taller athlete here— this has helped with his acceleration angles. Use an appropriate weight to allow for elastic movement.

Galloping progressions are helpful in understanding the gait bias of each athlete—can be a quick way to assess foot and lower leg function in a large group. Early, mid or late stance bias will quickly manifest in these patterns. Hitting & pitching are representations of gait.

Lots talk on influence of strength on speed. Structure will have largest influence on-where each athlete falls on the spectrum. A narrow ISA with a very narrow pelvis will have the smallest need for wt room strength to fly. Wider structures generally need more relative strength

. It is key to understand that these are guidelines and not governing laws. There will be outliers in which alterations to the system must be made for optimal transfer to sport, but for the majority of athletes their training evolution will largely follow system guidelines.

Generally speaking incoming athletes will fall into 3 categories: those that will follow the typical progression of our LTAD model, physical outliers, and technical outliers. Their distribution also tends align pretty closely with a typical bell curve.
