Think like a surgeon. Prepare like a surgeon. SO excited to finally launch our cardiac surgery case planning books. Come to the OR prepared by using this plug and play approach to surgical planning.

I enrolled 20 medical students in a 2-week anastomosis training program over a 6 week period. A combination of in-person and home practice. From not knowing how to hand tie to confidently completing a distal anastomosis, I’m blown away! I can’t wait to show the results.
Back on cardiac surgery tomorrow after a 3 year phd hiatus. So grateful I did my phd in sim to have such an awesome home set up to dust off the ol cobwebs 😎🫀

I believe a great surgeon is not the one with just good hands, but the one who exudes leadership and calm in moments of crisis. More focus in residency should be on the NOTSS!

Exciting 😍😍 running our emergency chest reopening sim today. The base of our of sim man. I LOVE sim, can you tell? Fidelity doesn’t have to equal expensive ☺️
@UAlberta_FoMD
When someone makes a comment about leaving early at 4:30pm as a cardiac surgery resident… actually, I’ve been here since yesterday morning at 6am

This is what sim dreams are made of!! Talk about a legendary multidisciplinary team!! Case: arrest on induction in the context of a redosternotomy requiring peripheral cannulation 😍

All adult ORs are on hold due to the number of emergency cases and transplants done in the past week.
Putting my junior through some drills ☺️
Perfect opportunity for practice.
@Ethicon
Forever writing sim scenarios for my cardiac surgery program. Does your program evaluate and train nontechnical skills of a surgeon? If they don’t, they should.

Today in the world of team-based training we had a post cardiac surgery vfib arrest.
We strive for realism in design, effective communication and teamwork!
So lucky to be apart of this heart team 😍

My favorite kind of conversation - management of ATAAD with and without malperfusion. Forever in awe of
@OuzounianMD
and how much of a role model you are to all cardiac surgery trainees but even more to us aspiring female cardiac surgeons!

I can’t believe I am saying it but tonight’s lecture series by Dr. Glineur and
@cscs_sccc
made me excited about coronary surgery like I get about aortic surgery!? Changing career plans!? Forever blessed by the wonderful Canadian surgeons who are willing to teach us trainees!
I’m always asked what are we looking for in a med student? The reality is we are looking for like minded people, who have the same passion and enthusiasm for heart surgery. You want a colleague that at the end of a tough day you can share moments of laughter with 🥹

Pumped to be rocking the boat of the U of A cardiac surgery program and spear heading the simulation program!!

Times are changing!
We are proud to announce that Dr.

has been awarded the highly competitive Robert Maudsley Fellowship for Studies in Medical Education!
Charlotte is a

@McMasterPGME
trainee in the Clinician Investigator Program and
@McMasterHSED
, studying sim in surgery!
I think surgical practice is better when you work in pairs. What is underemphasized in surgical training is how to be a GOOD surgical assistant. Anticipating what your partner needs demonstrates your understanding of the task. 🤓
Fantastic talk tonight by
@OuzounianMD
on approach to the arch in Type A dissection. Session 2 of our national
@cscs_sccc
lecture series! Coming to you monthly high yield topics in cardiac surgery!
Learning how I can incorporate 3D/VR into surgical education. Our advancements in technology are truly amazing and often times underutilized!

Some days you have to test your personal limits. Training while being a cardiac surgery resident isn’t easy but we got it done and I’m so stoked and already can’t wait for the next one 🤩
What a great day 2 of our spring meeting. Couldn’t agree more. I am blessed to have found myself wonderful mentors along the way. Without them who knows where I would be today!!!

Happening now!! Thank you
@RuelMarc1

@cscs_sccc
monthly lecture series! We are so lucky to have such amazing Canadian cardiac surgeons!
@soreabg
Always the best part of the
@cscs_sccc
lecture series are the clinical pearls from the experts!!! So lucky to have
@MichaelMwachu
presenting to us :) tune in to our YouTube channel CSCS Canadian Society of Cardiac Surgeons if you missed out 😁
Another amazing team-based session in the MAHI OR.
The scenario of the day is oxygenator failure!
Team-based training should happen for many reasons but the top 2 for me are
(1) increase patient safety
(2) strengthen your OR team by working in a safe environment
@RichardWhitloc2
Thank you so much for the shout out but the reality is this initiative would never have been possible without the fantastic and supportive surgeons like yourself! I feel lucky everyday to train in Canada and be surrounded by such inspiration!
Happening tomorrow! Excited for our 3rd national academic half day. Bringing the community of cardiac surgery trainees together ☺️. Always so grateful for the keen participation from our Canadian faculty to take part.
Can DM for a link if interested!

The CSCS CSCP 2023 Spring Meeting is officially underway! Tonight, the Resident Research Competition with 7 awesome abstracts vying for the three top prizes.
Are we actually graduating competent surgeons? Do we spend too much time focusing on a written RCPSC exam, where is the exam that assess whether a trainee can operate proficiently? Will the change to CBD be enough?
Good luck to all the amazing medical students starting their interviews today! A special shout-out to my mentee
@heartBOT71
who I have had the utmost pleasure working with over the past 4.5 years!
The future of cardiac surgery is so bright :)
Amazing talk on aortic surgery and
@OuzounianMD
is such a huge role model for myself as an aspiring aortic surgeon. Thank you

for the session ☺️
Every 3rd Friday, our Heart Institute runs team-based simulations so that we can offer the best care for our patients. We have nursing, perfusion, anesthesia and surgery all involved.
Our minds are truly amazing. At the beginning of the summer I could barely walk without pain and today I just ran 35km. Almost at my goal distance (42km) before my very first ultramarathon!!
