Glad this is finally public. 🙃 DW has been laying off ppl all week. Shit that they’re relying on underpaid, exploited labor in other countries because they refuse to pay living wages in the US. A constant race to the bottom in the fantasy pursuit of infinite growth.

Seeing a misconception floating around. Disney isn’t transferring #blueskystudios employees to other studios. They are funneling Blue Sky applications for vacant positions at Disney companies. They still have to go thru hiring processes. And there’s only so many openings.

Also regarding Chapek… he was hired in Feb 2020 and one of the first big things that happened after that was Blue Sky shutting down. While I’m glad it seems like many friends + colleagues landed on their feet, and while BSS certainly had its problems, I will be salty forever. 🙃

Artists lose either way. Like the article says, this leaves WDAS and Pixar, as the only two studios that still fully produce their theatrical animation in the US. But let’s not ignore that Disney killed off the other one, Blue Sky. FUCKING SUCKS.

Sad news in the computer graphics world. Heard from a trusted source that Eugene Troubetzkoy, co-founder of Blue Sky Studios, ray-tracing pioneer, and one of the developers of the CGI Studio renderer, has passed away at 91.

They’ll bring on a consultant or a writer but cone the hell on. Nothing’s changed. Mulan. Pocahontas. Tiana. Moana. All white guys. Coco had a Latino co-director who I felt was always overlooked. One of the heads of story on Moana is Pacific Islander I believe.

I rt this article yesterday b/c it really did help me understand the situation/earning call better. Still weary that mergers create conditions where things change on a dime for laymen workers (more so than normal situations that are perpetually unstable—thanks capitalism!).

Accuracy matters and this is misinformation of the worst kind. WB Discovery NEVER said during their earnings call that there would be a 'broad range of cuts' to kids & animation content. Here's a look at what they said + analysis of what it means:

Latest ep of my industry news podcast with Cartoon Brew is out! Please give it a listen! It also includes an excerpt of a longer interview I did with Glen Keane that will be out soon. 🤩 I'd really appreciate a listen and feedback.😀

I really do wish they'd have made a print version of the Nimona art book. I'm SO grateful we get what we got today, but I'd have adored supporting a physical copy. But I guess they don't think it would be worth it. Obv for us fans it is, but bigger pic for manufacturing I guess?

Hello Twitter! I am here, live-tweeting the #AnnieAwards ! Please bear with me today while I give you animation goodness. Kicking things off with a highlight reel of Richard Williams's films. What a way to start. Such a legend.

Like, I saw ppl on here wondering about Anubis for ages after it had been canned. But studios don't announce when projects get cancelled if they can--why would they? They just stop getting mentioned & most ppl don't ever notice. Just fellow animation nerds who care more :)

Watched and really enjoyed @MaggieMaeFish ’s latest about Queerness in LotR and The Old Guard, and was pleasantly surprised to see @MollyOstertag in the video! (And @lindzamer whose work I now have to track down!)

Not a single original property (other than the penguins doc) (Artemis is a popular book series). Excited for some of these but with all the success past films like this have brought I want to see more daring ideas.

Reminder, here’s what the next 12 months of Disney movies looks like. Could be the most successful 12-month stretch for any movie studio in history.

I’m never happy to hear someone’s losing their job, and I do feel bad this is so public, but I do feel like he’s been making some not great decisions that have been affecting ppl. Plus I’m sure he’ll be leaving w more money than any of us’ll ever see 😕
