I try not to see, but my eyes are already closed. I am dreaming a child, covered in dirt and blood. He is speaking a language I don't understand, but I know he is saying, "My mama, my mama." He cannot say his name. No-one will ever call him by his name again. #CeasefireInGazaNOW

The women of Rings of Power and the pre-Raphaelites: a ๐Ÿงต There's a bit of discussion in my timeline today about whether medieval dress was really as portrayed in RoP. (Why does anyone think Middle Earth is like medieval Europe?) I see much more pre-Raphaelite influence.

Her Lindon dress is also strongly reminiscent of pre-Raphaelite styling, here compared with Waterhouse's Ophelia. Though subtle, there is heavy embroidery detail at the sleeves and dropped waistline of Galadriel's golden gown.

It seems clear Galadriel's Nรนmenor dress was inspired by Edward Burne-Jones' painting 'The Wedding of Psyche'. Psyche = 'soul', the passive and long-suffering wife of Cupid. It feels rather subversive for this dress in particular to be used for one of her most active fight scenes

Not costume this time, but I'm far from the first to point out classical art imagery in The Rings of Power staging and scenery. Here's the same deep perspective used at Lindon tree, and in pre-Raphaelite Alma Tadema's painting of Troy.

For the PJ purists - worthy of an entire thread to herself - I give you our pre-Raphaelite princess: Miranda Otto as Eowyn in the LOTR movies. The detail in her costumes is incredible, and hardly even noticeable on screen because much of it is seld-coloured or subtly understated.

We know RoP teases out certain ideas that Tolkien didn't look at in detail (eg in LOTR G could read S's mind) to legitimately play with. I get the feeling a lot of objection comes from PJ film lovers (& their canon is very different).

@gimgolas @arwenaragorns This is one of those aspects of LOTR that I've loved since childhood - that sense that the characters are fully aware of each other, not (as so many of us) charging through life following only their own thoughts and inclinations. Gimli and Legolas are such a good example.

Today is #InternationalWomensDay . And if youโ€™ve not yet read about the brilliant scientist Cecilia Payne, who discovered what stars are made of - but got overlooked at the time - now would be a perfect time to have a quick read. ๐Ÿ‘‡

@PhDhurtBrain I beg to differ... One, love! One, love! Both masked and gloved, the vorpal blade he wielded true. He sanitised, then smug with pride he came galumphing through.

@shockproofbeats This does rather remind me of my son eying me up and down (it had been a pretty frazzled day) and saying, "Mum, are you older than Grandpa?" When I explained the nature of the generational relationship, he was horrified. How dare I be related to his beloved special person? ๐Ÿ˜†

Good morning #TolkienTrewsday #TolkienTuesday #Tolkien (theme: Villains) a ๐Ÿงต I want to fly the flag for one of my favourite Rings of Power original characters. Waldreg is a marvel. Sleazy and manipulative, representing everything the elves dislike about Men...

@baldursfeyre It seems bonkers because every Tav's Astarion becomes different, depending on what dialogue and behaviour choices you make. Neil didn't do all that work just to make a one-size-fits-all puppet.

@rmayemsinger Gods and Monsters 1998 starring Ian McKellen, Brendan Fraser and Lynn Redgrave. Probably was never going to be a massive hit, but it featured three wonderful acting performances: beautifully filmed, but as intimate as a stage play. + I completely agree about Truly Madly Deeply.

@commaficionado Oh for fff..... ! All parents struggle, it doesn't make you a bad parent to speak about it. Parenting while autistic brings special challenges (regardless of the neuro-variant state of the children) and we should feel free to talk about it without being labelled disfunctional!

@mervatim ๐Ÿ˜† That brings back some memories! My sons are only 16 months apart and they got up to some weird shit, though it was the older one who was prone to nose bleeds. Once the wee one clambered into my bed at first light and whispered "Blood. Blood everywhere. I think D's dead."

So proud to have this poem published in @blackboughpoems 's brand new winter anthology. And did Tolkien's golden and silver light, from the trees Laurelin and Telperion, influence my imagery here? Why, yes they did #TolkienTrewsday #Light

Driving up the spine of Scotland listening to @bearmccreary Rings of Power s1 soundtrack - and reaching Glen Coe under a sky of mist and pearl just as the instrumental version of Where the Shadows Lie comes on - must be one of the most sublime experiences of the modern world

@Joannechocolat I don't know why they aren't bothered by the fact that the people they 'need' to protect us from are themselves. I mean, there aren't that many dire wolves, saber tooth tigers or polar bears roaming the streets. Just men.

The character who saved my life. When reading LOTR at a very difficult time in my life, Eowyn gave me strength and hope, and a model I could live by when I felt incredibly strongly that there was no place for me in the world, and everyone would be better off without me.

@TolkienSociety Here are my precious LOTR 1970s editions. I inherited them from my grandparents, but they're too fragile to read so I have reading copies (2005) too. I first read Merry and Pippin in Fangorn while pretending chocolate buttons were lembas. These days it's lem(on)bas melts.

@theunquietbard "Cousin." Who is the monster in this pairing? We've seen Feud Rautha at his worst. We cannot yet imagine (or accept) what Paul is about to become. It's appropriate to see in this scene how strongly they identify and empathise with one another. Great acting.

@FellowshipFans So many. So many. But I cannot trump the sheer badassery of Finrod Felagund taking on the Great Deceiver himself in a mighty song battle (Lay of Leithian). I would pay good money for that stage show!
