On 29 July 1954: The Fellowship of Ring is published. Being the first part of J.R.R. #Tolkien 's The Lord of Rings, it tells of how the hobbit Frodo Baggins leaves the Shire on a quest to destroy the One Ring. #LOTR is now one of the best selling and most loved books in history.

On this day in 2003: The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King was released in cinemas around the world. Adapting part of J.R.R. #Tolkien ’s The Two Towers and The Return of the King, the film won 11 Academy Awards despite deciding to skip portraying Appendix C on film! #lotr

On this day in 1977: J.R.R. #Tolkien 's The Silmarillion was published. Edited by Christopher Tolkien, the book details the entire history of the world before The Hobbit, and goes into the legends that underpin the entire mythology including the creation of the world.
