I was recently reminded of how in Tamil Nadu, there is no access to the morning-after pill. I had to ask girlfriends to bring these from Bangalore. Strange for a state with better FLFP outcomes, lower son preference, and greater upward mobility of women. Why does this matter? 1/n

New (first pub for me) paper alert: - 6 mill. criminal cases - no evidence of gender/religious in-group bias - judicial bias hasn't been studied at scale in India before - result differs from what we've seen in developed country literature on gender/ethnic judicial bias!

Very happy to see all the PhD acceptances. I also understand that’s it’s rough if you’re not in anywhere yet. Not sure I know how to handle that well, but (1) it’s VERY early (2) you can only go to one school (3) the process can be super random. Helped to keep that stuff in mind

I only make rotis on days when my workday isn’t full, bc roti days def take more ⏰ than rice dinner days, and every time I think there must be smth to the roti vs rice eating areas gender equality hypothesis (partner cleans so it’s not a 5 hrs 👩, 1 hr 👨 hh work 🏡 thankfully)

YES! @seema_econ 's research has broadly indicated social norms are the game-changer re: gender in S Asia. This + that norms are sticky makes one feel helpless. But here is evidence by @seema_econ + co-authors showing primary school education can shift norms!

While it is true that cases have been surging in rural India for a while now, despite a waning COVID-19 curve, the rise is not uniform across States. In TN and Kerala, the rural surge is limited. But across all States rural pop. received fewer doses of vaccine.

Came across a hair barter economy when visiting cousins in Talbagicha (WB) last week where women sell accumulated hair (that falls everyday) in exchange of utensils! My aunts do it, apparently grandma used to too for years. The man who comes by w his cart: the “choolwalla” 😃

If people take one thing from my work it should be that families in MENA & Asia face an “honour-income trade off”: Female employment only rises when its economic returns compensate for men’s loss of honour. Otherwise patriarchy persists for generations.
