I was recently reminded of how in Tamil Nadu, there is no access to the morning-after pill. I had to ask girlfriends to bring these from Bangalore. Strange for a state with better FLFP outcomes, lower son preference, and greater upward mobility of women. Why does this matter? 1/n

This man gave me my big break in life (Tata scholarship for Indian students) and my father his (young engineer from Muzaffarpur landing a job at the steel plant in Jamshedpur). Two instances in an ocean of lives transformed. An unmatched legacy.
RIP Ratan Tata. The last of a generation of industrialists who had no interest in personal wealth; who saw himself as a trustee of great assets to be used for the public good; and who believed in the ethics & values the Tatas have always stood for.

Research-wise, it's a puzzle. Maybe it's an error to say Tamil Nadu has better gender norms than North India, maybe it is equally conservative norms wise (think marriage, inheritance norms etc.) but it stands out in female labor outcomes bc of high labor demand & education? 3/n

Excess deaths close to 3 million.

New (first pub for me) paper alert:
- 6 mill. criminal cases
- no evidence of gender/religious in-group bias
- judicial bias hasn't been studied at scale in India before
- result differs from what we've seen in developed country literature on gender/ethnic judicial bias!
Also, I got a solid 11 out of 11 rejections last year -- and I'm doing just fine (once I got over my ego lol)! Hope applicants get into their dream programs, or at least programs of best fit, but even if you don't you'll more than survive
Very happy to see all the PhD acceptances. I also understand that’s it’s rough if you’re not in anywhere yet. Not sure I know how to handle that well, but (1) it’s VERY early (2) you can only go to one school (3) the process can be super random. Helped to keep that stuff in mind
The thing that strikes me in this video is the end where he asks "aap kaunse jaat ke hai", and the respondent's body language changes -- the relationship between caste & dignity (internally & externally imposed) is what I hope will die one day.

A rare gem and hero indeed. Much like the millions of women she has lifted, her leadership was not loud, but dexterous, stubborn, and magnanimous.
Us women in policy walk in her enormous footsteps.
Deeply saddened to hear of the passing of the very great Ela Bhatt, founder of the Self-Employed Women’s Association, Magsaysay Awardee, and Gandhian. A rare gem and a hero.

It is deeply humbling to stop and see the human beings who appear in the form of data points in the reports, analyses, op-eds we generate everyday in our various roles. This is phenomenal story-telling.
Indispensable but invisible. The women in rural India eat last and least. And their energy-sapping routines devastate their health, as the endless loop of labour continues.

My dream survey to run is go around asking male households heads across 🇮🇳 how high would the potential wage be for him to consider letting go of "honor" & bringing in the income & repeat the q by varying job characteristics e.g. - distance to job, female workforce share etc.
If people take one thing from my work it should be that families in MENA & Asia face an “honour-income trade off”:
Female employment only rises when its economic returns compensate for men’s loss of honour.
Otherwise patriarchy persists for generations.
