Transform Gmail into a premium experience. An extension from

There are FIVE different possible versions of Gmail's UI live in the app right now.
The three on the right should all be gone by year end as they force Material You on everyone and sunset Hangouts.
As of yesterday, Simplify Gmail v3 is fully launched on all browsers (Firefox was last).
Bug reports are slowing down but still trickling in. Edge still takes for ever to approve updates so you might consider using the version in the Chrome Web Store.
Gmail is rolling out a code change (no visible updates) that breaks Simplify Gmail.
Simplify Gmail v2.5.41 and v3.0.50 are rolling out right now to fix the issue. Thanks to those who reported the problem.

They show ads on the Promotions and Social tabs (on by default but you can turn them off) and sell Google Workplace. You're also more likely to be signed when using Google Search which makes search ads more relevant. They don't use email data for ad targeting.
On track to launch Simplify Gmail v3 to all browsers and all users by end of the year. It is embarrassing how long v3 has been in beta / development but I hope it was all worth the wait.
It is turning out to be a much bigger update than Simplify v2! Here is all that remains:
Simplify Gmail v3.0.53 is live (). It is a BIG update. Along with a bunch of small improvements and fixes is a total overhaul of Simplify Options bringing several new features. Full change log here:
Gmail made a change last night that broke Simplify's app menu bar (what shows up when you hover over the profile photo). I've fixed it and submitted updates for all browsers.
Firefox and the v3 beta on Chrome are already live. Still waiting on Safari, Chrome v2, and Edge.
Looks like the Gmail design update that was announced last June is finally going to happen:
Here is what I'm thinking Simplify will do based on the mocks.
The first test version of bundles are now available in Gmail in the canary channel for Simplify, !
I made a video tour too:
Make sure you disable the stable release if you have both versions installed at the same time.
Simplify Gmail v3.0.21 (beta) released and is the first step in adding preferences for bundles. Look in the label menu in the nav.
Preference is not yet account-specific (opting to not bundle Social will apply to all accounts in that browser profile). Will fix in next update.
Candidate for most annoying Gmail/browser/Simplify issue of 2023:
Gmail started using a non-breaking space instead of a space in some places in thread dates. Safari won't create a date with those spaces which broke date grouping. 😖😖😖 Fix uploading now...
Inline expanding bundles are SO close.
I've got a lot packed into the next Canary update (v3.0.5). I thought I'd have it out a week ago, but it wasn't solid yet. Can't wait to get it everyone. Here is just a taste...
Simplify v3.0.15 includes some nice improvements to bundles and something I've wanted to copy from Superhuman for a while:
Press [ i ] to reply to an intro email. This moves the sender to Bcc, everyone else to To, and adds a short line at the top of the reply.
FYI: Looks like Gmail has updated the design again this week (see below) causing some minor issues with Simplify. I don't have access to it on any of my accounts yet but will update Simplify as soon as I do.
v2.5.12 just went live for Chrome and Firefox (Edge will take a week and no idea when Safari will get it). Also pushed update v3.0.10 beta for Chrome.
Both updates have an urgent fix for GSuite (the code around the logo changed breaking the App Menu)
I've long thought that the left/right arrow keys would make for a good shortcut in conversation view.
But I wasn't sure if they should jump between messages (N/P) in the conversation or jump between conversations (J/K).
I finally tried it out and fell in love within minutes.
Here is a detailed walk through of the HUGE update coming to Simplify v3 beta.
Bonus content: some background on what I consider a flaw in Gmail search and how it impacts bundles.
Rolling out now: Improvement to the app bar toggle and inbox zero backgrounds are now applied in ALL non-image themes (they used to only be applied in the default and dark theme).

Once-upon-a-time Gmail design lead and Inbox co-founder here... I agree.
And that's part of why I made -- it is free to try and $2/month if you love it.
In case you stumble on this and aren't already using the Simplify Gmail v3 beta with bundling, get it here:

Needed a break from working on bundles... so I started working on reminders (also slated to be part of Simplify Gmail v3).
A sneak peek and details on how they will work in a moment. First, what icon should I use? String on a finger or sticky note?
Simplify v2.5.5 (last week) and v2.5.6 (just now) launched.
Includes:
- Support for Gmail's new To-field autocomplete,
- Fix for the flickering composer in dark mode (when compose is also inverted)
- Improvements for popped out message view
- And more:
Just pushed out another update for the beta (v3.0.22). This keeps bundles in place as you clean them out. Seems like a small detail, but makes a big difference.
A tiny bit of detail in Gmail's design history... one of the first major design projects I worked on when joining the Gmail team in 2007 was redesigning everything to do with labels.
At the time, "folders" was one of the top feature requests.

@disco_lu
The left nav and compose button gets hidden when you minimize the nav with the new default-on app bar.
He doesn't have the new new Material You design in your screenshot (that is slowly rolling out) which lets you disable the new app bar and always see the compose button.
I just pushed Simplify v2.5.14 with support for Gmail's new design.
I'm rolling it out to 20% of users initially and then everyone by the end of tomorrow assuming I don't hear about any major regressions. Here's a tour:
UPDATE
#2
: I'm not going to rush supporting the new Gmail design since you can opt out of it. Shouldn't take long... a week or two.
I've got some ideas I want to fully bake. For example, put the minimized chat heads above the compose button in the bottom right.
@JohnJBlatchford
@michlschwrtz
I'm working on adding bundles which will give you the ability to schedule delivery of emails by Gmail category or your own labels/filters.

Full disclosure: free to try and $2/month after. Also, desktop only.
My unstated goal is to give 80% of Superhuman's goodness for a tiny fraction of the cost. With bundles, saved searches, reminders and more around the corner, I think I'm getting close to exceeding that goal.
@RichardHulse
@leggett
The new design may only be available to Workspace accounts.
Either way, I plan to opt into the new Gmail design as soon as it launches. We'll see how quickly I can support the new design. Once I do, you just have to opt into the new Gmail design to test.
@vincenttaglia
@avsa
I wish we could have Inbox back too. If you aren't using the v3 beta already, you should check it out. It brings back Inbox's bundles to Gmail.

Simplify Gmail is way more than simple tweaks actually. I co-founded
@inboxbygmail
and am bringing all the magic back and then some.
The next version (in beta at ) is bringing bundles, reminders, and more. And I'm doing it without the need for API access.
Update
#3
: I just pushed Simplify v2.5.14 with support for Gmail's new design. I'm rolling it out to 20% of users initially and then everyone by the end of tomorrow assuming I don't hear about any major regressions.
Just pushed v2.5.7 to stable channel with fixes which are listed in
Also pushed v3.0.3 with the above fixes and a number of fixes for bundles (I've lost track honestly... I have notes somewhere... it is late).
The other cool thing here is I'm finally using this Twitter account so I can tweet about mundane details like this and not worry about spamming people. 😜
@mikeslaats
If you use Gmail, Simplify Gmail blocks these and over 250 other trackers. It does a lot of other things too (which you may like or not like)
Try it for free:
@mikekarnj
I'm trying to amplify the difference with Simplify Gmail. After I finish bundles, we're going to work on reminders and the ⌘K menu.
What are your favorite Superhuman features that you wish were in Gmail?
@jimmyzelinskie
It's not 100% but it is getting close. There are still some issues with focus jumping on clearing a bundle or archiving inside a bundle. But Inboxy has those same issues and more.
@leanderlenzing
Anyways... I'll get an update out soon (maybe today even). I need to do more testing and figure out what supporting the new app nav (for those who want to keep it) looks like. I'm not sure my original plan will work.
@samuelmehr
@zachad
Gmail has always had good filtering options but it is limited in how much that helps.
Simplify Gmail v3 (in beta, available to use in Chrome) brings back bundling for labels and Gmail's categories.
@lindsaycat
The beta/canary channel has historically only been 1-3 weeks ahead of the main channel except when I start working on a really big update or feature.
v3.0.2 about to drop. Fixes bundles for other languages. There were several issues that lead to some serious breakage.
My favorite was realizing category names (e.g., "Promociones") are not the search (category:promotions). Duh.
@pvm
@miked1ck
@Superhuman
I'm close to having an update that supports the new design.
But honestly, if you don't use Chat or Spaces, the new design doesn't improve anything other than basically change the default theme to the Soft Gray theme.
@janvaniperen
I think left is the only real option.
• The right side is all about add-ons and quick settings. Putting it over there is asking for trouble.
• Bottom would interfere with the compose moles or things like pinned inline replies.
I will play with other options like above the nav:
Rolling out now: Improvement to the app bar toggle and inbox zero backgrounds are now applied in ALL non-image themes (they used to only be applied in the default and dark theme).
@leanderlenzing
Yeah, that's where I'm leaning. I thought maybe something would be better/new but I honestly don't see anything worth keeping if you don't use chat.
Feedback and bug reports are starting to slow down some. Lot of work to do.
Very grateful for everyone being willing to use this early version and give me feedback. 🙏
@leanderlenzing
If you like the light gray theme, you can (and always could) just change your theme. I'm inclined to keep the default theme all white (as it is today) so that is an option.
@mikestrives
@loom
@Grammarly
@NotionHQ
@buffer
So far, bundles, better dark mode, profile photos in the inbox (takes a while to build up the local db), and a bunch of tiny improvements.
More on bundles here:
And full details in the changelog:
@leanderlenzing
Maybe. The way it works is I detect and remember avatars in conversation view and then figure out the right one to show in list view. So for this first version, I'm not going to add anything that isn't there out of an abundance of caution (e.g. the from address could be spoofed).
@mikeslaats
I've also open sourced the pattern list of trackers I've built up over the last few years:
And I've reached out to several other blockers and services to encourage them to use my list to update their shorter list of trackers. More:
@jasonlong
This is on my list and I plan to actually change the theme which will be interruptive and take a few seconds, so I'm probably going to ask the user if it is ok to switch.
@joshuasoehn
I pushed an update last night and will ramp up to 100% of users by the end of today. You can opt out of the new design under Gmail Settings.

Thanks for the recommendation Robin.
Have you tried the v3 beta with bundles? It has taken almost a year to perfect them but I'm nearly there.
Videos showing progress:
Try the beta here (Chrome & Edge only at the moment):
After a fair bit of testing and experimenting, we came to conclusion that it was best not to label them "labels" in the left nav.
We figured out the most common labels and simply gave everyone a few defaults and removed the "Labels" title above them.
I'm think compose is only available when in Mail.
The bottom left button is like an app switcher where it always shows the last app you were in and the other apps on hover.
Maybe, I have an option to keep the new nav design but let it fully minimize?
I should have added: I'm going to do a good bit of testing on these before I launch them to everyone. And I'm going to test them before they have *all* the features I want to add.
If you want to be part of that, be sure to be on the Canary channel:
