The exquisite turquoise blue flowers of Salvia bullulata 'Pale Form'. We've brought this plant into the conservatory for the winter, and it will probably flower right the way through indoors. A unique colour, and definitely a top ten Salvia as far as we're concerned! 😍😍

How lucky were we to see this today - a hummingbird hawk-moth feeding on Salvia oxyphora. Many New World salvias are pollinated by (real) hummingbirds in the wild: this is the closest that we get here in #somerset #salviasunday

Do you suffer from floppy plants? We've solved this problem with upturned hanging baskets, letting the plant grow through it naturally. No ugly canes or supports in view, just beautiful upright plants.

Really excited about this NEW Salvia seedling we found in our garden. Almost black flowers with dark bracts. Growing upright at 3 feet. Will definitely be propagated. We're calling it 'Blackthorne' after our house name. 😊😊

Absolutely love this Achillea 'Pomegranate', now on its second flush of flowers this season. It was cut right back after flowering and here it is now. Can't recommend it enough. 😊😊

Now for something mahoosive.. Salvia gesneriflora 'Tequila'. Huge red flowers with almost black calyces. Can grow to 25ft in the wild in Mexico (gulp! ). We've had it a month and it's 5ft tall already. Machete at the ready. Photo from

Not been the best week weather wise for garden photography, but a better morning this morning. Which gives us the opportunity to share a photo of our favourite Salvia, S. dombeyi, still in flower here on the Welsh borders. Flowers are the largest on any Salvia, at about 15cm!

Now for something completely different. Salvia africana lutea, with glaucous leaves. An evergreen rounded shrub with an erect and spreading habit is native to coastal areas of South Africa.

On Saturday 22nd June, at our Open Day, we will have this Salvia darcyi. Hardy perennial once established, it will produce masses of large scarlet red flowers on spikes up to around 4 feet. Originates from Central and North America.

A new salvia in our collection is Salvia chionophylla, from Mexico, given to us by Peter Wadeley. Stunning pale blue flowers with white markings, on a reasonably compact shrub. Reputed to be fairly hardy, but we haven't tested this out yet ourselves.

It's hard to beat the bud/flower colour combination of Salvia mexicana. Fantastic lime green buds, from which the gorgeous rich purple flowers emerge. This variety is 'Lolita'. A flower stem of S. discolor has also photo bombed its way into the pic!

This is the lovely Sanguisorba 'Pink Brushes', which is really thriving in our new garden here on the Welsh borders. Flowering at around 4ft, the flowers are not as large as those on 'Lilac Squirrel' but the plant is more upright and less prone to flopping.

One of the best new salvias in our garden here on the Welsh borders this year has been 'Purple and Bloom'. Shorter and (in our view) even darker in colour than 'Amistad', it has been flowering like this for months. 💜💜
