Research on mass violence, Middle East |
Author of 'Paramilitarism' (2020), 'Syrian Gulag' (2022).
On 16 April 2013, the
#Assad
regime’s Military Intelligence massacred over 100 civilians (including women and children) in Damascus by driving them to an alley in Tadamon neighborhood, taking them to a pre-dug pit, and executing them one by one. (1/4)
The massacre stands in a broader context of
#genocide
in the southern Damascus suburbs. For the inside story see our longread with the fearless and peerless Annsar Shahhoud in
@newlinesmag
. Arabic translation forthcoming in
@aljumhuriya_net
.
The perpetrators videotaped the entire massacre, by far the worst footage I have seen in 11 years of violence in Syria. We obtained the videos, analyzed them, managed to find the main perpetrator on Facebook, and interviewed him. (2/4) Full story by
@martinchulov
in
@guardian
.
This material is unique: a) There are no other examples of
#Assad
's Mukhabarat so clearly on record committing massacres and torture against unarmed civilians who are neither detainees nor combatants, b) the perpetrator admitted to his crimes and explained why he did it. (3/4)
After 9 years of research, here is a pretaste for the book I'm writing on Assad's 'Shabbiha' militias. This article looks at their mobilization, motives, and massacres in the city of Homs from 2011 on, and is based on interviews with these militiamen.
Looking forward to presenting my forthcoming book "Shabbiha: Assad's Militias and Mass Violence in Syria" tomorrow afternoon at All Souls College in Oxford. Please come and attend, there is a lot to discuss and I'm sure I can use the feedback!
Coming soon, first in Dutch, then asap in English, Arabic, German and Turkish: "Syrian Gulag: Assad's Prisons, 1970-2020", the first book that provides an overview of the causes, dynamics, and consequences of the Assad regime's prison system.

The
#Assad
regime's paramilitary death squads are known as

For years the

The extent to which Atatürk's alcoholism debilitated his functioning in Turkey in the 1930s. When reading his aide's diaries, published fairly recently, one can see how the Pasha started the morning drunk, spent most of the day pretty tipsy, and ended the day absolutely hammered.

Denial of the crime is always part of the violence itself. The
