"The last man to bear your crest died over a thousand years ago. [...]" "I told you I found it on a dead man." My very first impression of this was not only that Sauron found the crest on the last man to bear it (over 1000 years ago), but he was the one who killed him for it.

I've finally gathered my thoughts just enough to say how excited I am for scene comparisons. (e.g.) How does Sauron deal with traps when he's Halbrand vs. Annatar? (Even with 6 seconds of Annatar, I'm already fascinated by how differently and similarly Charlie carries himself.)

Comparing these images adds a lot of context (the beginning vs. the end). The way his hair is tied back (on the right) makes him look more prepared for battle or a fight, along with the tighter fit of his clothes, his stance, expression, etc. Everything is more harsh.

This has been said a lot, but I'll say it again: Making us love Halbrand before stabbing us in the heart was a pro move. There's a scene in a trilogy I read recently ("The First Law" by Joe Abercrombie) with two best friends who became bitter enemies...

"The master I apprenticed to used to speak of the wonders of your craft." Did Sauron speak of Morgoth or Aulë as his master? It was most likely Aulë. Now, it may seem strange that Celebrimbor's name, let alone his work, would be held in such high regard by either one.

Something interesting about season 1: After the prologue, there were no typical flashbacks. In moments where there could have been one, we were shown a representation of an event, instead of the event itself. Some examples:

#troprewatch : A lot of this kind of works as a red-herring cover for when we get introduced to Halbrand's "King of the Southlands" lineage; a question of if he can be good. But it also shows us the mindset of the elves; they hold onto grudges for a long time,

Patrick McKay's favorite part in the 2nd age is when Sauron forges the One Ring, "invokes" the Ring poem, "and the Elves instantly perceive they've been had" (SDCC 2022). You know that whole sequence is gonna be SO cool and we will feel their alarm👇

Unlike all other episode titles of Season 1, the title of Episode 7, ‘The Eye’, has no obvious connection to what is shown in the episode. It’s almost as if the title will only make sense once we get to know what Sauron did behind the scene during the events of this episode.

I'm not sure about this, but it's an idea. I've seen some hypothesize that a shot from the BTS video is a reunion between Galadriel and Celebrían, because of how happy Galadriel seems. It has also been said that the setting is the same where she's very distressed in the teaser.

As I'm continuing my Rings of Power rewatch, something is sticking out to me. "Sauron" is an Elven name meaning "Abhorred". He never would call himself that and he certainly wouldn't allow his followers to. "I pledge my loyalty to Sauron" is silly and would never have been said.

Not to be annoying but what does it mean that Halbrand was made “for Galadriel”? How long has he been in that form? Was he waiting for her? Was he looking for her? Did he know he was going to run into her? Why does Sauron feel Galadriel “needed” a stinky Aragorn-looking low-man?

Some parts from the soundtrack of Episode 1 (S1) that I listen to on a loop: A Musical "Rewatch." 1) The conversation with Finrod and Galadriel. Very simple, nostalgic and bittersweet. Makes me sad. Begins when Finrod says, "It was a good ship, sister." —Prologue—

(3/13) Being evil makes someone like Sauron incapable of love (in any capacity) because "love," by definition, is the direct contradiction to "evil." Take it from Tolkien's buddy:

Adar is an example of a former true follower. He never called him Sauron, despite the betrayal and the fact that they hate each other. He said: "...the one YOU CALL Sauron..." proving that he once used another (more acceptable) name.

Friendly suggestion that Sauron saw this conversation. Gal: "I intend to ask of the King a fresh company." [..] El: "If after the ceremony, that is still your wish, you shall have [an audience]. :)" — Sauron: "They cast you out for deigning to beg them for a few, petty soldiers."

...imagine if he said: "I apprenticed to Aulë. I was talking about Aulë." Celebrimbor would marvel at the idea that Aulë himself spoke highly of his craft. Beyond flattery, he'd have a new sense of responsibility. Because that means Annatar, a supposed emissary of the Valar...

(8/13) Even so, Sauron lusts after power, rather than beauty. He wanted Galadriel to be at his side, but it was only to 'enact his designs faster.' It is as Charlie said:

"...the most ancient songs of the Elves, of which echoes are remembered still in the West..." Galadriel: "When I was a child, I heard stories of Elves taken by Morgoth. [...] You are one of them, are you not?" (1x06)

(6/13) Does his alarmingly convincing friendliness towards Celebrimbor mean that he steadily wished for Celebrimbor's ultimate good as far as it could be obtained? (oh, the perils of believing it) Galadriel didn't fall for anything after she knew who he was. Why should we?

(1/25) —Gil-galad— A small portion of the upcoming analysis (Ch. 6). (very condensed version) With #TheRingsOfPower , we CANNOT accept obscure things at face value. Any time a door to ambiguity opens, it's imperative to think more carefully and ensure that we're not tricked.

(7/13) If Sauron took Galadriel's physical appearance into account (I don't know if he did, but let's roll with it), he still wouldn't catch feelings. There is a major disconnect between love and lust here. LOVE requires care for the wellbeing of another. LUST does not.

This is cool because it drives all stories forward, instead of shifting us back and forth between time periods (like how Sauron's "flashback" was represented by the Southlands' current events). It also allows us to use our imagination. We can have our own flashbacks.

Like, since that article said Adar was offered a deal and then duped, the idea that he would have been CONVINCED to go into that kind of captivity is more terrifying to me than if he was just kidnapped.

We could have easily seen exactly what Sauron did before the raft, but we saw Southlanders surrendering to Adar. Could it represent something that happened in the Southlands? Or Sauron kneeling before Eönwë after the War? How often does he surrender to survive? (1x05)

Sauron perceived Galadriel's desire for power. That's what made his pitch on the raft so effective. Her question, "Save, or rule?" was her baiting him in their back-and-forth battle of wits; she knew he was in her mind, using her darkest desires against her.

I know "reading her thoughts" might seem random, but I mean that Sauron perceived her desire to rule in order to benefit the world and others, but him using that desire as bait helped her recognize the evil that could come from it.

In what conversations would Sauron's master "speak of the wonders of [Celebrimbor's] craft?" Sauron joined Morgoth long before even Fëanor was alive; and it was Fëanor's craft that preoccupied Morgoth's mind, not Celebrimbor's.

...wouldn't just claim to have been sent by "the Valar." He would claim that AULË sent him. "My master, Aulë, spoke of the wonders of your craft. So, he sent me here to aid you in your efforts to save your people, and capture the beauty of this land you and I both love."

Season 2 is now rapidly approaching, and a lot of my posts for season 1 are scattered across various places. So, this is the beginning of an attempt to gather all of them (and more thoughts and theories I haven't posted) onto the blog.

Consider the friendship between Annatar and Celebrimbor. Annatar wouldn't need to conceal his previous identity. (The friendship has already developed; no use in starting over.) If he revealed to Celebrimbor that he disguised himself as "Halbrand" for... reasons...
