21 September is forever the day my mother was killed outside our house while we waited for her inside. I miss her. We all lost so many, and yet Sri Lanka is in yet another authoritarian mode, the state intent on undoing even small steps towards devolution and democracy.

(My dearest father) Dayapala Thiranagama speaks to BBC Sinhala ( in Sinhala) about the assassination of Rajani Thiranagama (my mother) in 1989 by the LTTE. She was a doctor, an academic and a human rights activist with the group University Teachers for Human Rights ( Jaffna).
Students are reviving Universities into places that actively engage with the world and community. The Stanford SitIn encampment protesting against genocide in Gaza and the West Bank was one of the most meaningful actions I have seen for a while. Now in awe of Columbia students.
So excited to talk in this series. To honor Rajani Thiranagama, my mother who was assassinated on Sep 21 1989, I will talk more personally about consequences of militarization, incarceration and violence in Sri Lanka and the necessity to nurture politics of living.
Audrey Rebeira passed away today. She was not a known figure, an ordinary person with strong feminist and socialist convictions and faith led her to nurture and care for others. Audrey sheltered Tamil dissidents and Sinhala leftists throughout the 1980s and 1990s.
Abolish the STF. It is a paramilitary force only set up to repress and enact extrajudicial violence. There is no argument anyone can advance for its continued existence.
Commandoes of police Special Task Force were filmed brutally beating and kicking a student activist while rest of the protesters were tear-gassed and chased away on

A Sri Lankan storming of the presidential palace not only involves swimming in the presidential pool but cleaning up and frying snacks in the presidential kitchen. The best!
Such a sad day. Remembering the thousands of Tamils who died in the last battles in Mullaivaikal 2009. Reposting the link to the UTHRJ report on the last days. It bears witness, as we have to. When justice seems still so far away, truth lights our way.
I knew a landslide was coming. Yet I am still so devastated. More authoritarianism. More militarization. More corruption and more and more and more.

Remembering the thousands and thousands of Tamils killed at Mullaivaikal between April and May 2009. Also begging progressives writing to remember not to erase the ethnic cleansing and killing of Muslims. "Tamil only" acted like "Sinhala only"in north and east.
1995, five years after the eviction of Muslims, the Sri Lankan army advanced on Jaffna, the LTTE forced all Tamils to leave to make a political statement and leave the city empty. People begged to stay. My grandmother was one of the last to leave. Eviction and Exodus.Never forget

I’ve been living on Twitter news and protest videos. For all my friends who have no idea what is going on in Sri Lanka, I know that my Twitter feed seems crazed. What has happened and is happening in Sri Lanka is cataclysmic. People refuse to give up. Hope and despair together.
‘In recent weeks, protests unlike anything seen in Sri Lanka’s history have taken place across the country, driven not by an organised movement but fuelled instead by a collective rage at the politicians’ via

It is so possible for so many of us to oppose State and LTTE killings, incarcerations, persecution of minorities. It is not about seeing both sides. It is about picking a side. Ordinary Tamils and Muslims over military actors. Every time.

My aunt was incarcerated by state. My father tortured and imprisoned by state. My mother wrote about state, IPKF and LTTE violence and was killed by the LTTE for it. I grew up in Jaffna with state violence. We’ve been talking. You haven’t been listening in that case!
In NYC this Friday for a showing of No More Tears Sister. Thanks to CUNY graduate center who are hosting. Thanks to Helene Klodawsky who made this beautiful film about my mother- to whom I am always grateful. Come and hear us talk about war, human rights and holding on to justice
@ShehanKaru
. It’s day my mother died, so I am reading your amazing “Seven Moons of Mali Almeida” today. I cried because it is a tremendous book and because my mother is there ushering in the dead, tired, conscientious and humane. I cried and laughed throughout. Thank you
You may argue that the state holds greater responsibility for the impoverishment and displacement of our communities. But fighting for justice against the state doesn’t mean erasing the trauma of what the LTTE did to us. Especially the LTTE’s ethnic cleansing of Muslims.
There is nothing noble about suffering when all you want are the people you have lost back again in your life. I try and keep my mother alive for my children. Sri Lanka forgets every single one of our dead, the host of people waiting for a reckoning and accountability only grows.

Thank you Ambika. It is so important to acknowledge the complexity and brutality of relations between LTTE and ordinary Tamils and Muslims. It is sad to see Tamil nationalist selective erasure for political benefit, these brutalities are actual life and memories for many of us.
I signed. Christmas in my Christian Tamil family is always so sweet even in the middle of the war. But the inhumanity, and destruction of this latest installment of the Israeli war waged against Palestinians is unbearable. Christmas is for the dispossessed who long for freedom.

Today thirty years ago that the LTTE forcibly evicted 80,000 Northern Muslims from their homes in the north. The LTTE and the SL State have rendered displacement the defining feature of being Tamils and Muslims. Remembering is our promise to our future. This statement says it all
Audrey was where my father hid underground throughout my childhood and where we went to meet him. Where she took in my aunt and others throughout the 1980s and 1990s. So many people have this story of Audrey. She sustained dissidence and human rights in Sri Lanka unrecognized
Thank you for all the beautiful messages to my sister and me yesterday. You can’t know how much it means. For many decades the fear that shrouded our lives meant that we only heard cynical, painful comments about our mother - speaking to a nihilism and
I miss my mother and it has been 31 yrs. I think of those families of the disappeared in the last 12 years, those who have lost in recent anti-Muslim riots and just how much this violence and fear keeps going on. We have to mobilize against this authoritarianism now.
Families are left to mourn our dead and our disappeared. Between 1989-1991 my mother was assassinated by the LTTE, my youngest aunt’s two best friends, both student activist arrested and later killed by the LTTE. My favorite uncle disappeared and killed by the State.
I am an academic and I call for a free Palestine and an end to the Israeli state’s apartheid. This is integral to both my moral view and my scholarship. Pass it on.

It just means picking the rights and future of our communities over the military actors that have governed our lives for decades. Owning our pasts is painful, but we have made some bear it more heavily to avoid our responsibility for what was done by us and others in our name.

UTHRJ and Tamil leftists and dissidents all owe so much to Audrey. She was braver than so many others in unflinchingly caring for them. She was the safe house, the strong voice who kept all secrets.
Tamil dissidents have fought to insist upon Tamil and Muslim rights which don't involve the denial of one for the other. FFS mourning a genocide has to work against ethnic purity dreams not reinstall them. The families who lost want their loved ones back, that is the trauma.
Apart from all my tweeting...being in the US right now is sending me into a spiral of existential dread. I grew up partly in a war so I know a life that was far more constrained. And YET I can barely think past the next few days. I can’t stop tabulating scenarios and violence. 😱
Audrey’s house is so familiar to me. We stayed there on our visits to see our father because that was the only safe house and place when Sinhalese leftists like him were being slaughtered by the JVP and the state. Audrey was chosen family.
May is just full of thinking about the war, thinking about how many people were lost. I just find myself triggered when the atrocities committed by the state are then also accidentally ( because of lack of thought) slid into further erasure.

Speaking the truth and hewing close to it is the hardest act it turns out but that is the essence of having integrity and siding with ordinary people. We have to stand for something that means more than the LTTE and the Sri Lankan state. Having a future depends on it.

Yes. Both are possible. I mourned the death of thousands of Tamils. I was so angry. With the Sri Lankan state. And with the LTTE senior leaders who prized the life and protection of Prabhakaran ( responsible for the murder of my mother and so many Tamils) above our community.
My 12 son suggested we watch the Grave of the Fireflies. We both cried. This is literally the saddest film I have seen for years. It is devastating. OH MY GOD.

Elijah. I think you have missed out the Mandate and the colonial rearranging. Please don’t say such quick things. There are plenty of really good histories. I don’t know about you, but for me, this makes me think about how the state continually retaliated against Tamils.
