A beautiful essay on anti-Palestinian racism. This little editorial intrusion is chilling, however. No discourse is safe from the ever-present Israeli state.

Some thoughts from me on translation, including my decision to translate only women, after becoming fed up with the male gaze, misogyny, etc. It’s exhausting to tolerate these things as a reader, but far worse as a translator. thank you @chhotahazri !

Today is US publication day for Tomb of Sand! This may seem an unsurprising fact to many but it’s taken nearly 30 years to get one of my translations published in the US. And now I’m not even there to celebrate! Let’s raise a virtual glass to this and many more such occasions 🥂

Stopped by the new pro-Palestine solidarity encampment at @Princeton . People were still gathering and no tents had been pitched (perhaps because admin had sent an email threatening consequences for encampments?). Light campus police presence. So inspired by this student movement!

Someone asked me anxiously at a reading recently how she would be able to tell if a translation was “good” or not if she didn’t know the source language. I said, if you like it, then it’s good!

One key advice to reading translations: Dont see differences between original and translation necessarily as flaws or errors. In translation there is always transformation.

Happy Father’s Day to my father, shown here constructing a thread sculpture in 1975. The sculpture grew so extensive, we had to commando crawl through the living room to get to the kitchen. Materials: multi-colored industrial weight thread and small balls of plasticine.

I feel really awful for Yilin in how much time and energy this must be taking from her. It's draining just seeing her go through it. Translator life is FULL of these moments where drama that DOES NOT NEED TO HAPPEN keeps wasting translators' time and energy. *Hate* this.

Here is why translators are the closest readers of a text: We don't only have to understand a text personally when reading it but (attempt to) anticipate the many other ways it can be understood by others.
