Update: today my daughter was told in a school yoga class that namaste means the light in me, etc. She told the teacher it just means hello, and that the other meaning is an invention of yoga teachers, to which the teacher replied that it was actually an untranslatable term.

Most reviewers have no idea how to review translations. This short piece by Daniel Hahn will help. A good starting point is to grasp the fact that the translator wrote every word you’re reading, even though they did not create the plot and characters, etc.

Easily one of the most lighthearted moments on Thursday night: when I presented Bora with the Cursèd Bunny Easter egg I had made, and then she tied the silver ribbon from the package around her head, giving herself bunny ears. Which she wore for the rest of the evening!

Just came upon this 2016 photo of the late, great translator Muhammad Umar Memon, taken at the Madison S Asia Conference. Whenever I'm asked which S Asian translations of are the best, Memon Sahib's are the first I mention. Start with his translations of Naiyer Masud. Exquisite.

One key advice to reading translations: Dont see differences between original and translation necessarily as flaws or errors. In translation there is always transformation.
