I have a new essay up in
@TheMarkazReview
- I wrote about how the Right is weaponizing antisemitism to dismantle equity initiatives on college/university campuses & silence anti-Zionist/Palestinian voices.
I am Jewish and my one wish is for PALESTINE TO BE FREE, FROM THE RIVER TO THE SEA - Am I antisemitic now? Come for me, condemn me, I’m ready. Free Palestine, and down with all settler states.
377-44-1: House passed a resolution that the "slogan, 'from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free' is antisemitic and its use must be condemned."
What to wear when you’re called into yet another meeting intended to stop you from calling a genocide a genocide….
We won’t be silenced! We demand a ceasefire NOW, stop the genocide in Gaza, FREE PALESTINE!
#CeasefireNOW
#FreePalestine
@rebeccamakkai
I like “I hope this email doesn’t find you. I hope you have escaped, that you’re free” (slightly more optimistic than my second favorite, “I hope you are managing the trauma of the American experience” 😵💫)
1/2 Reading news out of Harvard & thinking about the time I was a 23 year old MA student, being sexually harassed by a senior faculty member, almost to the point of quitting & years later another student from the program told me "we all just assumed you were having an affair."
If you’re an academic & more concerned w/protecting your “brand” than speaking out against the US funded Israeli genocide in Gaza, then you’re not a scholar or intellectual, you’re a bureaucrat, an institutional cog. This is the banality of evil. Shame on you. Free Palestine 🍉
I’ve been barred from the campus where I teach since mid-January - the Gaza solidarity encampments remind me why it’s an honor to work with college students. Here’s hoping the old world is ending & this generation can welcome in a new world, focused on justice and liberation 🍉
1/2 When I'm asked why I'm a self-hating Jew, I like to say I'm someone who values the Jewish principles of tzedek (the pursuit of justice), tikkun olam (repairing the world), & derekh eretz (treating all with dignity/respect), NOT an alliance with a genocidal global superpower.
2/2 "We" included faculty/administrators. These situations are open secrets & those w/power will double-down to protect their own. Grad students/contingent faculty = dispensable by the ruling class, invested in holding onto their power/reproducing it in very particular ways.
It’s just WILD to me how much
@NPR
hates Palestinians and students and how much they love Zionists and the police. So much for public radio lol/sob
😭😵💫🤯🫤💩
I wrote an essay about what it means to be Jewish right now. Spoiler - Never again means never again for ANYONE. Thank you to
@JulieBillaud
for the invitation and
@allegra_lab
for the home.
Month 10 of Israel’s US-funded genocide in Gaza & way too many Americans are still far more concerned with hurt feelings, from students to presidents. And still, tens of thousands of Palestinians have been, will be murdered, hundreds of thousands are being starved to death.
1. Tonight, Passover-the Jewish holiday celebrating liberation-begins. I've only ever understood this holiday to be a call for Palestinian freedom. If that's not the way you have previously celebrated, there's no time like the present to call for a free Palestine...
1. On this Holocaust Remembrance Day, never forget that
@POTUS
is directly responsible for the ongoing holocaust/genocide/Nakba in Palestine. Today, in honor of historical amnesia & pure evil, Israel is escalating this current US-backed genocide by invading Rafah.
This Holocaust Remembrance Day, we mourn the six million Jews who were killed by the Nazis during one of the darkest chapters in human history.
And we recommit to heeding the lessons of the Shoah and realizing the responsibility of “Never Again.”
So many students I love graduated today. I wasn’t allowed to teach them this semester or watch them receive their degrees today. But I take comfort in knowing many of them see how institutions silence dissent. This will only make them louder as they call for a free Palestine 🍉
@HerbertHistory
I took the cover page of my dissertation out to a shooting range and stuck it up on the target. That bullet-hole ridden page now hangs on the wall of my office. Very satisfying and cathartic, highly recommend 😂
I also think about this a lot: “…there is not a day of my life that I am not critiquing myself to see if my politics are borne out in the way that I live and the way that I talk and present myself.” from "Talking Back: Thinking Feminist, Thinking Black"
1/2 Everything I write about involves unacknowledged histories and hidden narratives so I will continue to do that work by teaching about the Nakba today while wearing my keffiyeh. A temporary ceasefire is not enough, Palestine must be free.
1/3 My Jewish identity is rooted in tzedek, tikkun olam & derekh eretz* This is central to Judaism & antithetical to Zionism’s racist settler colonial ideology. I am Jewish by being anti-Zionist. This house resolution denies & erases my identity. This resolution is antisemitic.
A new House resolution, which may be voted on as early as tonight, "clearly and firmly states that anti-Zionism is antisemitism." This comes after a previous resolution hinted at that claim, but did not fully state it. So now Congress wants to leave no question.
But there's an
Anti-Zionism is NOT antisemitism
Anti-Zionism is NOT antisemitism
Anti-Zionism is NOT antisemitism
Anti-Zionism is NOT antisemitism
Anti-Zionism is NOT antisemitism
Anti-Zionism is NOT antisemitism
Anti-Zionism is NOT antisemitism
Anti-Zionism is NOT antisemitism
Also - “Sometimes people try to destroy you, precisely because they recognize your power - not because they don't see it, but because they see it and they don't want it to exist.”
1/13 A🧵for educators: talk to your students about what is happening in Palestine! It may be scary (and for some, it may be impossible) but if you have the space, the security, and the platform, please use it. We are so often silenced by those who tell us we don't know enough...
1. If you're wondering who is training & organizing the Zionist students who are harassing, intimidating, attacking, & recording/reporting students protesting against the US/Israeli genocide in Gaza, look no further than
@HillelIntl
& Hasbara Fellowships:
ALL EYES ON RAFAH! This is what our students are asking us to do - don’t stop talking about Gaza - US media/politicians/administrators are trying to distract us, don’t let them! Free Palestine! 🍉🍉🍉
1/ I wrote this essay a few years ago after traveling to Palestine and developing a course on Palestine, (as well as making sure to include the occupation through a settler-colonial lens in every non-area specific class I teach)....
"I have for many years opposed Zionism as the dream of capitalist Jewry the world over for a Jewish State w/all its trimmings, such as Govt, laws, police, militarism...a Jewish State machinery to protect the privileges of the few against the many.” Emma Goldman, "On Zionism, 1938

Every time I’m attacked for being an anti-Zionist Jew, I recommit to speaking louder against genocide & occupation: “‘Never forget’ should be a call to action.” We owe Gaza our voice. We owe Palestinians our support. FREE PALESTINE! Never again is NOW 🍉
Hey
#AcademicTwitter
#anthrotwitter
what if we spent the rest of the summer revising all our syllabi to center Palestine and Palestinian scholars? They can’t fire us all. May our classrooms be a revolution… 🍉🍉🍉
Rewatching "Clueless" tonight and, thanks to
@Remember_Sarah
and
@yourewrongabout
I both caught AND understood why Cher refers to Josh as "Kato" - I feel like a pop culture star, my work here is done, happy Friday.
Israel is systematically executing aid workers/medical workers-they are actively blocking food/healthcare to the starved/attacked population they are annihilating before our very eyes & the US is funding it. If you aren’t speaking out against genocide, what are you even doing?
1. It’s WILD to me that there are still people remaining silent as Israel continues/accelerates its ongoing genocide in Gaza. How are you not using every platform you have to speak up for Palestine & Palestinians (unless the answer is your own racism/Islamophobia?) 🤯
Once, when I was a third year grad student, I organized a panel with a Very Famous Theory Dude as discussant. The week before the conference, he emailed me that I should come a day early and stay in his hotel room. I said no. Then he just… never showed up to the conference.
what’s your (anonymized!) conference presentation horror story, mine was when someone gave a talk and then in the q&a it was immediately pointed out that what they thought was interesting was just a spelling convention and the whole paper was based on a misunderstanding
I learned how to be an anti-Zionist organizer in 2004 while a grad student at Columbia. It was an honor to attend this yesterday. Institutions will continue to work to crush us but we will continue to fight for liberation. What a magical event this was 🥹 free Palestine 🍉
The People’s Graduation is singlehandedly the most beautiful event Ive ever been a part of as faculty at Columbia. I wept for so much of it. All the work is worth it at times like these 💕
“As we grapple with millennia of Jewish struggle and survival, we will not abandon our Palestinian cousins and peers, or let them stand alone. This genocide cannot continue.
Not in our names. With or without our names: Never.”
Language matters:
Gaza is not an open air prison - it’s a concentration camp.
Gazans are not prisoners: they are hostages.
This is GENOCIDE - never again means never again for ANYONE!
Ceasefire NOW, free Palestine, end the occupation.
#FreePalestine
#CeasefireForGaza
Grades are in, the semester is over, the solstice is here. And so I will mark the evening in the only appropriate way by listening to
@Remember_Sarah
tell me the truth about Tonya Harding while I sip bourbon & also watch figure skating videos in front of my fire.
@yourewrongabout
1. If you’re a college or university professor and you “stand with your students” but you can’t be bothered to call for a free Palestine and an end to Israel’s brutal genocidal settler colonial occupation, then you aren’t actually standing with your students.
1. Great news, folks! The thing about Zionism is that you can unlearn it! You don’t have to forge your identity through allegiance to a genocidal apartheid settler colonial state….
Intersectionality is one of those words many people use without truly understanding - here’s an excellent breakdown by
@zeinmurib
Then read their brilliant book Terms of Exclusion: Rightful Citizenship Claims & the Construction of LGBT Political Identity
1. Two racist geriatric genocide & colonialism loving white men fighting for the scraps of a sham democracy while all institutions remain actively complicit - sorry folks but this is literally the most American thing that could possibly happen.
1/2 I wrote about how, as long as Hamas is written off as a terrorist organization, the State of Israel and Zionists across the globe will continue to justify the ongoing genocide in Gaza. Thanks to
@JulieBillaud
and
@allegra_lab
While it’s great to see previously-silent faculty support their students involved in Gaza solidarity actions, these words of support are empty if they don’t include calls for a permanent ceasefire & a free Palestine-this is why our students are protesting-all eyes on Rafah! 🍉
Why yes, I DID just write "eat lunch" on my to-do list so I could cross something off, and then I ABSOLUTELY rewarded myself for my hard work with chocolate, wrote "self care" on the list, crossed it off, and ate some more chocolate as a reward. Tuesday has been VERY productive.
1. I will preface my main point by saying: what we are witnessing unfold and in Palestine and Israel is NOT equivalent to the holocaust or 9/11. Every event has its own history and context, and now, a 🧵….
After 10 years of consecutive full-time teaching (3/3) I am finally eligible to apply for a semester of sabbatical. I submitted that application today & tbh my greatest sense of accomplishment came from spelling both "sabbatical" & my own last name correctly in the application.
The student newspaper at my college asked me a series of questions about what's happening in Gaza. I'm sharing the google doc here with my answers - please circulate/use/share - if given the opportunity, speak out. I hope this information is helpful.
THIS. Because as it turns out, faculty who work at private colleges and universities (outside of California) do not actually have the right to free speech 😶
1. Essential reading. We should all be wary of the liberal urge to use the destruction of property as justification for increased policing/suppression of speech/silencing of protest. Here’s to more broken windows & less genocide 🍉🍉🍉
200 days of genocide & US politicians, media outlets, & university administrators continue to lean into Zionist propaganda. We say no! All eyes on Gaza! This is what our students are modeling for us - divest & resist for a free Palestine, from the river to the sea! 🍉
Just a reminder - no matter what they try to do to you, calling genocide GENOCIDE is always the right, the ONLY, thing to do. We are watching ongoing genocide in Gaza. Use the word. Don't let them silence you.
#CeasfireNOW
#FreePalestine
1/3 The war of words happening in the West has dangerous implications. Zionists are claiming "Intifada" & "From the River to the Sea, Palestine Will be Free" are inherently antisemitic & violent but this is a lie - these are words of liberation & freedom...
1/4 Here's my new essay on archives, photographs, reality television, and the White historical imagination. This essay also frames the memoir I’ve been writing over the past year. Thank you

@BeineckeLibrary

Sleep Around Before You Marry An Argument - essaying
Did Biden really have the audacity to say “scapegoating and demonizing any minority is a threat to every minority” while he has actively scapegoated & demonized Palestinians, a people he is actively helping to annihilate?
@POTUS
you have NO shame but you should be so ashamed.
Oh! I published a thing! On teaching and Palestine and teaching about Palestine. "May Your Classroom Be a Sea Change: Further Thoughts on Teaching about Palestine"
Our students are showing us they still believe in the possibility of democracy. Our politicians, both in government & universities, are showing us they prefer fascism. Somehow I remain an optimist. I believe our students are stronger than our rulers & that Palestine will be free
4. ANYWAY.
@HillelIntl
has never been a "place for Jewish life on campus." It's instead a Zionist factory, unwelcoming & unsafe to anti-Zionist Jews. Let's talk about THAT antisemitism on campus. Everything else is just a distraction from genocide. FREE PALESTINE.
My article, “The Art of Therapeutic Horsemanship: Communication, Choreography and Collaboration in Equine Therapy” finally has a home! And someday it will be published! If you are interested in multspecies ethnography and/or disability studies I’d be happy to send you a copy!
@WTFAnthro
A syllabus is limited, you can’t include everything. Citations/bibliographies are limited, you can’t read/engage everyone. Not citing or teaching abusers is not “cancellation,” it’s about choosing how to build a lineage & that is both an ethical & intellectual choice (IMHO)
@tressiemcphd
YES. I'm not sure if it's helpful, but I'm designing courses with 3 modules, each with 3 weeks of asynchronous/synchronous meetings/activities/readings, followed by a week of no class meetings for students to pause & write reflection papers. It gives us all much-needed breaks...
1. Academics from the global north who have built their careers on/by complicating and theorizing ideas, events, and histories - now is not the time for your thought experiments. There are two sides to this genocide- the colonized and the colonizer.
Educators, especially anthropology professors: have you revised your syllabi to include material on Palestine? It’s always relevant to teach specific case studies of settler colonialism and genocide…. 🍉

Academics: do you ever wonder who you’d be if you hadn’t spent all of your twenties in grad school and all of your thirties recovering from grad school? (Yeah, me neither 😵💫)
@lolabellebaird
Exactly, & I am SO sorry, that's f'ing awful. These stories are everywhere (I have so many more) & we make them personal/individual & they become about shame & secrets and then abusers keep abusing & these asshats continue to sign open letters, defending them. I'm sending you ❤️🔥
Call it genocide, Nakba, holocaust. Don’t call it war or conflict and for f-sake don’t say it’s complicated. Over 30.000 Palestinians murdered by Israeli forces in Gaza, millions more starving to death by design. Complicating this is complicity, pure and simple. Free Palestine!
1/2 I've had a lot of Zionists (who think - incorrectly - that I defend Hamas) come at me with "what do you think Hamas would do to you, a queer person?" So just a reminder that the US is actively trying to strip trans folks of all their rights....
2. Our college/university campuses are actively supporting the training of US college students as a mouthpiece for a foreign govt. Many campus Hillel's hire former Israeli soldiers ("Israel Fellows") to encourage Jewish students to spend time in the region/serve in the military.
1/3 In Judaism, we learn that it is our RELIGIOUS DUTY to ask questions. This is central to what it means to be Jewish. How have we come to this moment? A moment in which we are ostracizing/attacking people who are questioning Israel? THIS IS OUR RESPONSIBILITY AS JEWS!
@RottenInDenmark
UGH I'm an anthropologist and if another person asks me if I loved "Guns, Germs, and Steel" I might scream (but I would LOVE to hear that episode!)
2. What you are doing right now is EXACTLY what you would be doing globally/in Nazi Germany when Jews/queers/Catholics/the disabled/Roma/etc were carted off to concentration camps & murdered. How you justify your silence now is how you would justify your silence then…
Heyyyy Philly! I live here now. Looking for writers and queers. In the meantime, I’ll be spending all my time and money at

3. Nobody is free until we're all free - I pray and wish and hope that Palestine will be free, that Gazans will be safe, that Zionism will be eradicated, that all empires will fall, & that "from the river to the sea" will be universally understood as a call for freedom for all.
(To everyone else, speaking out and screaming and writing and teaching and having hard conversations and taking risks, I see you, I love you. You give me a shred of hope in this dark nightmare of a world we are living in)
