Ever wonder why your favorite restaurant or café closed? Often, it's due to a mammoth rent increase.
That's why we launched the

That IS the most British thing ever.
Claim ownership of something that isn't theirs and laugh in the owner's face when they ask for it back.
You just got colonized.
@theashleyray
If I were you I would start scheduling meetings with the boss at 4:30 like every day.
And then make sure those meetings can't be finished at 5.
"Shall we pick this up again at 9am tomorrow"
You can beat them, they're weak.
@jburnmurdoch
I've seen this in younger friends and colleagues.
Many young men wondering why women won't date them.
Many young women simply not dating because of the giant disconnect.
For one group, politics is reactionary. For the other, it's their healthcare and human rights.
I'm so pissed. Toronto drivers are f*cked.
Just saw a black Mercedes blow a hard red light at Richmond & Church.
He nailed a guy on a scooter in the Richmond bike lane who flipped over the hood & came down hard.
The driver fled the scene WEAVING THROUGH ONCOMING TRAFFIC.
@KishonnaGray
If I were the kids I would simply stage an elaborate fundraiser to buy back the community centre from a crochety old developer that likes to gamble via dance-offs.
Overheard in Toronto's Yorkville:
"I just love real estate. The pay doesn't really matter as long as I make north of 500k a year."
This isn't a real place.
Lululemon threatened to pull out of Canada without Temporary Foreign Worker exemptions.
They received exemptions allowing them to bypass advertising jobs & hiring local.
This WILL encourage other corps to ask for special treatment.

Just got a call from a Conservative fundraiser.
"I 100% can't support you after Erin O'Toole said he'd let Provinces determine abortion services."
"Well we're all in this together, could you donate $50?"
"I don't think selling out women is us being in this together."

A really important part of the LCBO deal:
- Converting 1,000 casual workers to permanent
- Hiring 60 permanent full-time employees
- Access to benefits for casual employees
To improve Canada's productivity we need good, secure jobs. This is a step in the right direction.
BREAKING: The LCBO and the union representing 10,000 of its workers reached a tentative agreement Saturday, more than two weeks after the strike began. .
So the Ontario government has:
1) Given a sweetheart deal to a foreign company for publicly owned land
2) Forced Ontario taxpayers to pay for a 600 million dollar parking garage
3) Avoided all transparency
This Ontario Place deal isn't even close to good business for Ontarians.
NEW: Therme, the company behind a controversial waterpark and spa that’s set to take over a major portion of Ontario Place has signed a 95-year lease with the province of Ontario, Global News has learned.

This is the kind of stuff that should bring deeply divided families back together this Thanksgiving.
It doesn't matter which side you're on, we can all enjoy a glass of whisky over a corrupt CEO drubbing.
Cash only.
You get yelled at for ordering.
Still 7.50 for a hamburger combo.
There is no place more iconic and welcoming than Square Boy on Toronto's Danforth Avenue.
Square Boy til the day I die.
Simply for comforting this guy and calming him down - something they were failing - the police ended up yelling at me too.
My social worker friends probably know this defeated feeling.
The police are supposed to de-escalate, why did that only happen when bystanders stepped in?
Chatting with a Toronto east-end cafe owner this morning.
Their rent is going up by 50% at the end of the year - they'll be closing.
2 neighbours closed months ago b/c of rent increases. The properties = still vacant.
Building already paid for 2X - why the 50% rent increase?
Thankfully the police did call an ambulance and within 5 minutes the guy was in the back of it.
Nathaniel that works at Lee Restaurant, if you need a witness statement, here I am.
This whole thread should be about how f*cked Toronto drivers are so I'm going to finish there.
The fact that this driver didn't even stop or slow down was gross.
Running reds is something I witness multiple times a day downtown Toronto. It's become casually accepted.
If I hadn't stepped in to calm down the guy who had just been assaulted, would he have ended up in handcuffs?
The worst part of that interaction is the police told me to just move along. To leave him be and let them handle it.
They ended up yelling at me too.
@CP24
Exec: "What do people want?"
Analyst: "The data shows drinkable coffee & donuts made on site - and clean washrooms."
Exec: "I hear our store employees likes pizza parties instead of good wages. Let's just do that."
@MorePerfectUS
Wild that healthcare still isn't a basic human right in the States.
Good on Governor Walz for at least stopping folks from dying because they have debt.
Had a phone call with a French immigrant yesterday.
She's opening a restaurant in Toronto and "can't believe there are no protections for commercial renters"
She described France's system - and boy howdy, why do we keep letting wealthy landowners write the rules in Canada?
@edzitron
People are starting to realize the control they believe governments have over them is actually held by a handful of tech companies.
And many apps are now absolute User Experience nightmares.
@beefy_burrito
I didn't know part of buying toilet paper as an adult would be having to understand the square footage of a hypothetical competitor's package of toilet paper.
I caught up with the scooter rider who, thankfully, was standing but visibly shaking, shell-shocked and concussed.
He was clearly agitated AND CONCUSSED and the police were yelling at him, it wasn't a good scene.

Likely.
Considering men tend to have more difficulty building long-term communities and friendships, the isolation brings them to harsher, more radical environments.
Did you hear about Sweetie Pie on Harbord St in Toronto?
The building was sold & the new landlord doubled their rent from 3k to 6k a month.
You know what's wild?
Even if they wanted to, the landlord might not be able to offer a lower rent price. Wait, what?
It’s time for commercial rent control to save small businesses and protect vibrant main streets- This Toronto cafe was hit with a staggering rent increase. As buildings sell and more leases come up for renewal, can local shops survive?
The result is that drivers will just keep driving off after hitting pedestrians, cyclists and micromobility users - they know nobody is going to stop them.
Over 500 riders showed up in support the 24 year old woman that was killed on Bloor street while biking to work last week because of a garbage bin illegally placed in a bike lane.
@TheBikingLawyer
points out 3 other recent deaths at this intersection.
I want the Toronto City Planner who designed this bike lane intersection to tell us all why.
Someone (many people?) are going to get BEEFED at Adelaide and York.

@sewistwrites
....which actually sounds way cooler than homeschooling.
"I was homeschooled" vs. "The governess taught us many subjects, including how to love our parents"

Private equity has a habit of destroying the things people love about a business:
1) Great employees + fair wages
2) The experience that great employees bring
Who does private equity benefit again?
Just a clarifying note:
After getting up, the scooter rider tried to catch the driver who successfully fled (likely) down Jarvis.
I caught up with the scooter guy at Jarvis and King where there were 2 off duty cops on construction duty.
I don't know what words were exchanged
@MorePerfectUS
And now they'll either have to hire back - costing them way more than not laying people off in the first place.
Or they'll just keep a trash product and milk it until a takeover or come to Jesus moment.
@Camp4
We pay quickly at my businesses as often as possible - it's a huge ROI.
We save 10s of thousands every year on discounts because in b2b punctuality isn't always the norm.
On top of that, we get some nice gifts around Christmas!
@LadyDumplings
I get the sense this business won't last very long.
And that the owner's will blame a politician for the consequences of their own dickery.
@dieworkwear
This is why I love shopping for clothes in Detroit.
They've got an emerging clothing & footwear industry with co-ops & companies paying craftspeople well.
Pingree makes shoes from local upcycled car leather.
US manufacturing exists but it's just a niche. We can change that.
The landlord for Dipped Donuts in Kensington Market just raised the rent by 100%
The business is closing & laying off employees.
Let's get a commercial renter bill of rights and protect local businesses from aggressive landlords.

Today we're calling out the Toronto Parking Authority (TPA/Green P) for rent increases in Kensington Market. TPA, which is owned by the City, has nearly doubled the rent for a small business in Kensington Market. We have also seen another business under TPA lands go under lately.

Anyone that could do basic math was able to see the oil companies gouging customers in 2021-22.
Sure, the carbon tax increased but it was 3 cents compared to what - gas prices skyrocketing by a buck?
What's really creating congestion in Toronto?
The amount of rideshare drivers has gone WAY UP compared to the amount of daily trips.
This over-saturation is creating a cascade of problems.

: City of Toronto officials are trying once again to potentially limit the number of rideshare companies, such as Uber and Lyft, on its busy streets.

Counterpoint:
1) Wear what makes you feel good and dress for the occasion.
2) Don't listen to folks that try to fit you into their tiny box.
@MorePerfectUS
I saw one at a business:
No students
No lazy people
Must be available on-call
No other jobs
Minimum wage
10-35 hours per week
That sign has been up for over a year now.
@JanisIrwin
We need to stop calling these protests.
Near any healthcare centre, it's agitation.
Protests have the goal of improving people's lives, the agitators outside of hospitals today are selfish and crass.
My small biz
@gotourscanada
operated Segway Tours at Ontario Place before being kicked out for spa construction.
Our Tour Guides had a lot of awesome stories to tell - including the types & variety of trees on the West Island.
Sad to see this destruction today.
Unfortunately there was a large amount of trees cut down last night at Ontario Place West Island. This is what remains of Moose Hollow, once filled with trees meant to evoke the Algonquin. We’re asking supporters to come down to West Island ramp entrance to bear witness.

@Chrisjjosephs
Business owner here - this dude is bang on.
It's not my employee's obligation to show up to a WAY TOO EARLY meeting with only 1 day notice.
Company culture is super important and I want the best talent - why wouldn't I be flexible with great folks?
One other note from the business owner:
"If I wanted to start a business now, I couldn't afford it. Rent in Toronto has gotten so high that working class people like me can't follow our dreams anymore.
You have to be rich to start a business in Toronto now."
Giving people the tools for success doesn't make them lazy.
It creates opportunity.
A Basic Income in Canada would unlock incredible potential in millions of our fellow Canadians. It's time to get everyone to the same starting line.

It's mind-blowing that Lululemon got a Temporary Foreign Worker exemption to hire:
> Graphic Designers
> Ad + Marketing Mangers
> Computer Systems Managers
1 of the most educated countries on Earth & ZERO Canadians can do this work? Right.

Bad headline. Here's what worked:
- Masks
- Vaccinations
- Test to stay policies
What didn't/inconclusive:
- Quarantining
- Cohorting
- Hybrid Learning
One thing they said really stuck out:
"I invested over $100,000 into this space & technically don't own the counters b/c they're attached to the ground.
My landlord owns my materials, labour, and the upgrades I made to the space. I can't even take them out without being sued."
If you're a business owner/company complaining about

, why? Canada's Employment Rate is higher than it was in Feb. 2020.
People are finding jobs they like.
I guess you have to ask yourself - why does nobody want your job during a labour shortage?
