Today the EP that I commissioned from the wonderful Maii Waleed as a gift for

to commemorate her goodbye from

’s SEMED region has come out on Spotify.
After desk rejecting a paper at the
@EJ_RES
yesterday I received the following message: "I wanted to thank you for providing more and better advice and comments than I would normally expect from a full set of reports." Made my day.

Research institutes will massively underspend on travel and other budget items this year. Funds should be used to extend expiring contracts of junior staff.
Our EER special issue in memory of Nora is shaping up beautifully. There are two more months before the deadline. Do consider sending us your best work relating to Nora‘s interests. The deadline will not be extended.
Happy to report that we have received the first couple of submissions for the EER special issue in memory of Nora. We expect a substantial volume of good submissions and much interest in the volume when it comes out. Do send us your best work relating to Nora’s interests.
Delighted to announce that Steffen Huck (

Authors, if your paper is rejected with *reasonable* comments from referees pls do work at least on some of them. Chances are you will get one of the original referees again and you're not inviting a favorable predisposition if you don't change anything.
This month I retired from active service at
@EconUCL
. I’m grateful for 21 amazing years with wonderful inspiring colleagues. And exceedingly happy that
@ucl
’s provost, Michael Spence, made me Emeritus Professor today. 🙏
I grew up with the equation of younger referees = nastier referees. But from my experience at the EER and now the
@EJ_RES
I'm happy to say it's no longer true. There is new generation, gentler & kinder.
Authors, if you don't understand what an editor wants you to do in a revision: ask them! Better than making assumptions or saying you didn't understand and, thus, decided to ignore the point. That's setting yourself up for second-round rejections.
First impression after four weeks at the
@EJ_RES
-- very high quality of submissions. No wonder the journal is doing well. But with a 95% rejection rate it's going to be a tough job.
Just a reminder that you can share a paper's history with the editors at the
@EJ_RES
. Just upload previous reports etc. It can really expediate the process!
Der R-Wert der Delta-Variante liegt deutlich über 1. Ich verstehe nicht, warum das nirgends klar festgehalten wird. Die Fokussierung auf ihren noch niedrigen Anteil kaschiert das eigentliche Geschehen.
#groundhogday
Happy to report that after a laborious week all papers in my
@EJ_RES
inbox are below 80 days which means that even after the Xmas break, that I intend to take, none will reach the 100 day threshold that we deem critical at the
@EJ_RES
. Yeah!
Da sind Ökonomik und Verhaltensforschung ja mal wieder toll vertreten. Seuchen sind ohne tieferes Begreifen sozialen Geschehens, Anreizen und Folgen, nicht in den Griff zu bekommen. Good luck to us all.
Desk reject & resubmit is an option I choose more and more often - if I like a paper but spot an obvious flaw at the screening stage. My feeling is that this offers authors the best of two worlds: commitment for full review if they agree or moving on swiftly. Any views?
@EJ_RES
Thanks to everybody reacting to my tweet about your appetite for a new OA journal in behavioral economics. Things are moving. I will keep you posted. If it happens, it will be strong.
I have a question for all working in behavioral econ. Would you consider submitting to a new open access journal with a first-rate editorial board, swift turnaround and a very reasonable fee (APC)? Aim would be to be the best outlet after GEB, EE and JEBO.
If you don’t want to referee a paper, please just say no in the system. Pending requests make editors’ lives just harder and, ultimately, cause unnecessary delays for authors.
The most incredible thing about Gary was his ability to bring out the very best in others. Almost all of his coauthors wrote their most impactful paper with him.

Today, at this very special date, my brother is turning 50. The anticipation of this was an incredible source of joy for our dad - already, well, fifty years ago ... It's sad that he is no longer with us to celebrate the final arrival of 2202 2202.

During this crisis editors should not insist on additional data collection in the lab or the field for revisions. At the EER I have instructed all AEs to adhere to this from today. I hope other journals will follow.

I’ve been working on charitable giving for twenty years and there were times when I thought the field was saturated. But thanks to the ingenuity of

I'm so happy about this! I have been working with

The new Google Scholar ranking for economics journals. Happy to see the
@EJ_RES
on 10 (and second highest European general interest journal after
@RevEconStud
, before EER and
@JEEA_News
).
Pretty incredible. China has now passed the U.S. in terms of net flow of scientific authors. The other two remarkable changes in these 13 years are the U.K changing from the top destination in 2007 to the top source in 2020, and Germany making the opposite move, from this sample
So, happy about these appointments at

Das Schlimme ist nicht menschliche Enttäuschung, das Schlimme ist, das wir ein System sehen, dass auf wissenschaftliche Expertise genauso viel gibt wie die Autokratien, die uns bedrohen.
I’m so sorry to be missing my keynote lecture at

today. A virus struck at the worst of all moments. I’m grateful to the organisers for inviting me and their understanding today.
Piotr was a frequent guest at the
@WZB_Berlin
. After the outbreak of the war, he held one of our researchers at risk scholarships. He was a keen researcher with great promise. Talking to him was pure joy. I am devastated.
Today I had to write a really awful rejection letter for the
@EJ_RES
. Could I have decided differently? Only at the price of becoming highly inconsistent & devaluing a great referee. In most cases so far consistency has worked in authors’ favour. I don’t want to change this.
Happy that this is finally out In two experiments we show that it’s much better to ask for donations than for contributions in calls for financing public/club goods

So incredibly sad and so hard to fathom. Konrad was brilliant, emphatic, and humble and fully dedicated to *all* aspects of academic life which, perhaps unusually for such a stellar researcher, included his exams - the, by far, most beautifully crafted exams I ever laid eyes on.

Gary Charness, one of the most prolific experimental economists, has passed away.
He was a terrific researcher, a gifted teacher, and an irreverent free thinker.
Despite not publishing any papers before his 50th birthday he published over 100 articles.
Grad Students: You NEED to publish. But you NEED to do so in top journals. I routinely see grad CVs with 4-5 publications, but in small journals. And I think… Great, but they must have a small mind. One publication at a top journal is far better than five in low-impact venues.
Was Donald Trump’s triumph in the 2016 primaries a political accident? In this paper, out just now, we say no. It was a chilling equilibrium outcome.

With the exception of the QJE all economics top journals quite tightly bunched together in terms of long-term impact in this Repec ranking. Clearly, no “top 5” discernible. EJ on 10, REStud on 11.
🥳We are happy to announce that on a measure of long run impact of articles,
@EJ_RES
appears in the Top 10 among all economics journals.

Authors, if your paper's status is "all reviews in" or some such this typically just means that 2 reports have been submitted. The editor might wait for a 3rd. No reason for impatience. Please share. Thanks.
