Joseph Nevins and I discuss my new book, *Home Rule: National Sovereignty and the Separation of Natives and Migrants* (Duke University Press, 2020) online:
@thisishannahkim
Don’t forget your power in the midst of his obvious disrespect. You assess his work and assign grades.
Don’t respond with sarcasm. You are not the only one keeping a record. It’s imperative you not allow his rudeness to prompt you to act poorly.
Be the strong person you are
Fun fact.
Nico Williams, the standout star of the Euros, is the son on Ghanaian parents who crossed the Sahara and climbed over the fence into the Spanish enclave of Melilla.
“Not so much the abolition of prisons but the abolition of a society that could have prisons, that could have slavery, that could have the wage, and therefore not abolition as the elimination of anything but abolition as the founding of a new society.” (Moten & Harney, 2004).
Migrants destroying border fences is not an act of war. It is an act of freedom. If their actions destabilize the system of nation-states, then we learn that nation-states are not compatible with freedom.

Hive: I'm teaching a graduate seminar this Fall on "Citizenship and Migration."
Which texts would you *absolutely* put on this syllabus?
Please help me focus on books/articles that historicize, problematize, re-politicize, and call for the abolition of citizenship and borders😘
The racist double standard over which refugees to help (“those like us”) and which to let die (“those not like us”) is bred in the bone of each and every nation-state. The sooner we acknowledge that all nation-states are racist-states, the sooner we can create another world.
The conversation about which “nations” are “real” and which “nations” are “fake” is tragic. They are all inventions of those who wish to rule over people. The greater tragedy is that we fight for and against them instead of for each other and our planetary commons.
Liberal hand-wringing over the electoral victory of the far-right in Italy will not extend to its core ideology: anti-migration. The EU will continue to support Italy’s abandonment and terrorizing of people on the move. Anti-migrant politics truly is the fascist foot in the door.

We must include the demand for free movement to our demands for a permanent ceasefire. People in Gaza have been demanding this. So have people in Egypt who want the borders opened. The rest of the world must join in. Nationalism kills.
Every Palestinian in Gaza has a fundraiser now in the hopes they can raise the thousands of dollars it takes to bribe the Egyptians to let them out of the cage where they will surely get killed. And the whole world knows this and just watches. I feel like I'm going insane.
Nothing is "national" - no disaster, no glory, nothing.
Almost half of all the deaths in the explosion in Beirut, Lebanon were migrant workers.
Yet, that is rarely mentioned.
Sent my letter to Canada's Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences informing them that I have cancelled my keynote lecture for Canadian Association of Work and Labour Studies conference at 2021 Congress in solidarity with the Black Canadian Studies Assoc.
Migration is self-activated justice.
And Freedom.
We owe solidarity to people on the move, not least b/c they face the sharp point of the injustice of nation-state/class rule
No one is free without the freedom to move at will.
Let us be clear
Nation-states (and the nationalisms legitimizing them) are the cause of the violence and death faced by "migrants"
Nation-states deny people's fundamental freedom to move across our planet. Their borders kill.
Freedom of movement is a movement for freedom
A world of nation-states is designed precisely to produce the results we see in Sudan.
Thousands of people with nationalities-other-than Sudan are transported out (under immense pressure) while millions of Sudanese nationals are abandoned b/c "their" state is at war with itself
Poland is segregating people fleeing Ukraine into two lines: one for Ukraine nationals; an other for “foreigners.” Missiles and bullets don’t recognize nationality and neither should we.
Looking forward to this conference and all the amazing people participating!
We must have anti-colonial politics capable of freeing us from both global capital and the nation-states that peddled lies about how they would liberate us.
That people in Poland are opening their homes to refugees from Ukraine shows how crucial the practice of othering is to ruling relations. People fleeing Asia and Africa not treated as “the same kind of people.” Rejecting these divisions is critical to our collective freedom.
Israel must be made a pariah state like we made Apartheid South Africa - a full-on academic, sports, cultural, financial, and military boycott.
And we must build a movement to force the US to stop arming Israel and giving it diplomatic cover.
The “british variant” of covid is showing up outside the UK in people who have not been there. Can we just deal with the global reality of this pandemic instead reverting back to useless Covid nationalism?
Nationhood +/or indigeneity is not the only basis for a relationship to land and one another. There's a long history of fighting colonizers and capitalists, not by demanding territory or sovereignty but the commons. That's the struggle I'm a part of. This too is anti-colonialism
My new article in the *European Journal of Social Theory*
I argue that we can advance both postcolonial theory and migration studies by understanding postcolonialism not only as a theoretical approach but as the post-World War II form of ruling relations
Andrew Cuomo ordered nursing homes to accept hospital patients with Covid. Then passed laws making it impossible to hold them liable for killing their patients. Then blamed nursing home staff - mostly women of color - for bringing Covid to nursing homes. Heads must roll.
The proportion of Twitter workers working on H1B visas is now enormous. H1Bs legally bind workers to the employer.
Musk is shilling for politicians demanding more anti-immigrant measures, knowing full well that such politics is what makes migrant workers "cheap" and disposable.
Hindu fascism has a global reach. The funding is global. The violence is global.
Its base is the the government of India, which claims to be fighting another "national liberation" struggle, this time against a "foreign religion."
Yup.
Nation-states always act as liberators until they subject people to their own national projects.
Nation-states carved out of former colonies are no better in this respect than those of the former colonial metropoles - but get a lot more leeway from the Left.
The simultaneous bemoaning that "the nation's women" are not having enough babies" and "there are too many immigrants" is a clear demonstration of the deep relationship between racism, nationalism, and hetero-patriarchy.
Horrifying - and a portend for us all.
The 33 million people affected are reporting that they are not receiving help from the Pakistani state.
We - as in the entire world - will need to address the devastations wrought by climate catastrophe as it sweeps the planet.
Horrifying footage from S.

today of entire building washed away by floods. Over 935 people killed, more than 33 million affected, worst natural disaster for country in decades:
Nation-states cannot exist without an enormous - and ever-escalating - level of violence. Such added cruelty only demonstrates to fellow-nationaists how much one "loves their nation."
Texas Gov Abbott has installed circular saws between the Rio Grande border buoys to maim or kill anyone who attempts to climb over. Two bodies have already been found trapped in the floating barrier.
He wants more migrants to die.
No nation-state is able to uphold “values of freedom and democracy” because each is built on a foundation of class rule and divisive politics that excludes all not seen to “belong” to the “nation.” The road to fascism is paved by efforts to justify its continued existence.
You know the best way to end anti-migrant violence?
Abolish the state category of “migrant” and, relatedly, the state category of “citizen.” These are (v. effective obvs) state categories meant to divide us from one another and should not be used as essential identities.
What makes "migrants" often cheaper to employ is their status as "migrants" - not anything about them per se.
The best way to fight against states and employers trying to weaken the working class is to fight against the difference that citizenship and immigration status make.
Rest in Power Dorothy E. Smith!
I had the pleasure of working with her during my Ph.D. Her work on ruling relations - and her insistence that we not abstract them - has greatly influenced my own work and many of my own students since.
Let’s up the ante (because legalistic arguments are not winning).
Move from “everyone has the right to seek asylum” to “everyone has the right to move. And to stay. And to move again. And stay.”
Freedom to move and to stay, period.
This is an outrage
Ghassan Hage's (
@anthroprofhage
) work has contributed enormously to our understanding of racism. That the Max Planck Society would disassociate themselves from him speaks volumes for their lack of understanding of racism. And then to smear him is unacceptable.
I will soon issue my own statement.
I would have lived with the first part re incompatibility. But finishing with ‘there is no place for racism’ implying that i am a racist, I cannot accept.
Statement of the Max Planck Society about Prof. Ghassan Hage
We need to completely reject “anti-smuggling” and “anti-trafficking” rhetoric. They are potent ideological weapons used by states to criminalize both mobility and solidarity. They harm the very people they purport to protect while empowering those who harm them.
I'm currently reaserching the draft minutes of cases of 'smuggling' of the AXD court, and this case really got me: a Kurdish asylum seeker who got 2 years and 8 months for helping people on the move buy train tickets to Athens in 2007.
“Migrant workers” are a specific labor market category created by national citizenship and immigration laws. Denying rights to people placed in legal categories of subordination (eg “undocumented “) is part of the state’s arsenal to provide employers with cheapened labor.
The US is seeing an unprecedented wave of migrant child labor right now.
Thousands of kids are working overnight in dangerous factories for brands like Cheerios, Fruit of the Loom and Ford. They're here alone and they're being failed in the most basic way.
“Repatriation” is a term that ought to be struck from our political vocabulary. It is nothing but a forced expulsion of people on the nationalist ground that they “belong” to some other nation-state. It is part of the trade in human beings between nation-states.
Yup. But a reminder, all nation-states are "ethno-states" and all nationalisms are racist
Every single nationalist project has a "nation" in mind on whose behalf they claim sovereignty (i.e. state rule). Each "nation" is constructed by ideas of shared "ancestry." Left and RIght
#sanctuaryspaces
"Land back" is not - or should not be - "national sovereignty."
"Land back" is deterritorialization, decommodification, a necessary part of every being's means of life.
"Land back" is the planetary commons.
The global system of nation-states was *designed* to produce apartheid - within states and between states. To end apartheid (citizenship apartheid; vaccine apartheid, etc), we need to abolish nationalism(s).
Travel restrictions don’t “buy time” to stop Covid infections. Nation-states use them to buy time to deflect our attention from the fact that governments are not eliminating patents on vaccines, nor organizing a global vaccination program.
Jürgen Habermas’s statement supporting Israel as a moral duty of Germans - and his refusal to acknowledge that it is carrying out a genocidal attack on the people of Gaza - is testimony to how Palestinians are being made to pay for the Nazis own genocide.
No, “diversity” does not reduce the violence of the police. Because the issue is not the “race” of the cops but the racist, class rule that the state institution of policing is directed to enforce.
Borders kill. Behind the making and enforcement of borders are nation-states
Nationalisms across the world + across the L-R political spectrum shore up the global system of nation-states and the borders that kill
Rejecting nationalisms is necessary for ending border violence
Most discussions about climate catastrophe take the nation-state as the social unit). This always produces massively flawed analysis.
This story talks class (if we read between the “socio-economic status” lines)
This is the "all lives matter" moment for sea rescues.
"to maintain a shred of our human decency, it’s necessary to honor all levels of human suffering and death."
We live in a world organized precisely so that billionaire "tourists" matter and poor "migrants" are made to die
The reaction to the Titan submarine has shown that like a digital Tower of Babel, social media is evolving into an increasingly ugly and chaotic space — a real-time repository for our worst impulses and ill-formed thoughts that should be kept to ourselves.
Paraphrasing Angela Y. Davis (who was speaking about racism):
In a nationalist society (and a world of nation-states), it is not enough to oppose one kind of nationalism (e.g. US nationalism or White/Christian nationalism).
We must be anti-nationalist.
If we condemn fascism without condemning nationalism (of all varieties) we are solidifying the structural conditions under which fascism thrives.
All nationalisms (and the power of sovereignty each demands) bend toward fascism.
Every being belongs where they are at any given moment. To say otherwise is to deny a world history of movement, reinforce a fantasy of stasis-as-perfection, and justify a world where escape is demonized & criminalized.
It is grotesque to describe kings, presidents, politicians, generals, and all the apparatchiks of power as “serving” the rest of us. Grotesque and gaslighting.

'The biggest difference between Gaza and the Jewish ghettos in Nazi-occupied Europe is that Gazans, many Gazans, most Gazans, are still alive, and the world still has an opportunity to do something about it.' — Masha Gessen (in Germany today)

“Allyship,” a military term, assumes separate aims, existence, and being. Solidarity starts from the premise of shared aims, existence, and grounds of being. Allyship is temporary and instrumental. Solidarity is about changing the terms and conditions of life.
There is absolutely no reason to prevent people from moving through Belarus and Poland to others points in Europe. The Anti-migration politics of nation-states are the crisis and are destroying lives.
Geert Wilders won on a racist/nationalist ticket of anti-immigration.
The far-right across the world is running on the same ticket.
Time to step up our organizing against them all. Anti-immigrant politics is an instrument of state and class rule over us all.
Fanon wrote: "the colonial world is a world divided into compartments," separated into Native and European quarters.
The postcolonial world of nation-states has compartments too: nationals and migrants.
Brutality defines both global systems.
Arendt’s most potent critique of nation-states: the need for an international body to deal with genocide (but with no power to enforce) is recognition that the system of nation-states is structured to carry out one genocide after another.
We need another system.
Nation-states cannot resolve the “situation at the border” (any border):
1.Capitalism creates huge disparities
2.Current world order of nation- states uses borders to either shut-out or exploit poor people
3.Nationalism uses migrants as a foil for failures of nation-states
Deportation lies at the heart of the national form of state power.
As nationalism intensifies to mask the incompatibility of nation-states with our liberation, so too do deportation measures.
The "let Afghans decide" line ignores that it is not all people in Afghanistan who have a say. It is those with the guns and the money.
Imagine anyone saying "let the Spanish decide" during the Spanish Civil War when Leftists across the world joined on the side of anti-fascism?
Consigning Afghanistan to "its" fate and not "our" business is actually disgracefully racist, not magnificently anti-imperialist. Boils down to "let the brown bastards be ground down by other brown bastards, why should we care, that's what they're like.". Not pretty put that way?
Recognizing the distinction between anti-state and anti-government is worthwhile.
The far-Right can be anti-government but is never anti-state. In fact the far-Right wants a strong state + a weak government. For them, "government" weakens authoritarian rule.

Do what you entered academia to do: research, write, share your ideas where others can engage with them, teach, and help run your university through your "service" work. And don't be silent in the face of power, anywhere, ever, especially in your department.
Movement is one of the greatest requirements for survival - for humans and all other living beings. Every living being is on the move in response to the climate catastrophe. Trying to stop this is both futile and a sure-fired path to fascism.
Capital and nation-states project every horror they unleash against us onto people categorized as “migrants.” *As if* people on the move, and not the regimes of capital/state, are responsible for climate catastrophe, poverty, insecurity.
The global system of nation-states requires two states to participate in deportation, normally the deporting state and the state whose citizenship the person being expelled held.
That is rapidly changing. Now, deporting states cut deals with any state willing to be a jailer.

That the current organization of the world cannot accommodate most people's mobility is testimony to how important citizenship and immigration controls are for capital and nation-states.

is a necessary part of showing solidarity.
Is so much of the Left so bad on international affairs (e.g. picking one nation-state as the "bad" one and tacitly or openly supporting the ones opposed by that nation-state), because they have no critique of nationalism?
Very heartened to hear students in both my undergraduate and graduate courses condemn Israel’s ever-escalating attacks on Gaza completely unprompted. Students brought this up as exemplary of what we were discussing (differential treatment of crime and nat’l borders, respectively)
Fred Hampton's "History is a Weapon" speech:
"we’re not going to fight capitalism with black capitalism, but we’re going to fight it with socialism. We’re going to fight their reactions with all of us people getting together and having an international proletarian revolution."
Outrageous that apologists for the Qatari state are depicting opposition to the World Cup (because of the enormous death of the indentured migrant workers who literally made it possible) as a “white” thing. Piss off.
F*CK Sovereignty. Assad dictatorship says allowing aid to people in rebel-held areas devastated by the earthquakes is a violation of its national sovereignty. True. National sovereignty is intended to protect states, not the people ruled by them. Send the aid!
RIP James C. Scott, one of the greatest fighters for the freedom to think and act without states.
His work is incredibly foundational to my own and I owe him a million, million thanks.
By the time any nation-state implements a travel restriction it is too late and the particular Covid variant is already present. Travel restrictions appeal to nationalist, anti-migrant politics that assumes that “we” are safe if we keep “them” out.
35,000 years ago, when climate change killed Neanderthals, homo sapiens survived because they migrated to more hospitable climes.
Under the rule of nation-states, climate migration is demonized and criminalized.
#NoBorders
= Life
Not all borders are the same. It was not until the 20th century, when various European-based empires were dismantled and their European metropoles became nation-states, that borders became primarily about regulating and restricting the entry of people we now know as "migrants."
This video - of Europe's constantly shifting borders - is superb. Apparently, less than 1% of international borders were created before 1500. Will definitely be showing this video at the start of my next lecture on nationalism and national identity.
@phagafaga
For a very long time, I have been witnessing white people getting very ugly in the competition over who is most anti-racist, seemingly without a clue that they are playing another “race game” instead of contributing to the end of racism.
@patriottakes
@mattgaetz
Myth 1: a sexual abuser abuses everyone around him.
Myth 2: getting some people to sign a letter attesting that they were not abused proves the person is not an abuser.
The deadliness of national borders is structural. It won't change with a change in the political party controlling the nation-state. Let's end this violence by building movements able to ensure better ways of being with one another.
Respecting our freedom to move is key.
