With Kamala Harris running for president, I will be shifting to cover her full time.
We at the
@sfchronicle
plan to bring our longstanding expertise to cover the heck out of this campaign, as I demonstrated on CNN.

SCOOP: The Biden administration considered declaring a public health emergency to preserve broad access to abortion services following the overturn of Roe, but officials ultimately decided against the move, according to people familiar with the matter. (Story on

Just a brief reminder that the
@sfchronicle
(aka me) wrote about Feinstein's daughter having power of attorney over her two weeks ago. "Katherine Feinstein — who has power of attorney in her mother’s legal matters..."
BREAKING Lisa Murkowski on the filibuster:
“It’s tempting to call for the removal of the filibuster so that we can do something."
“Without the filibuster, do we really think—do we really believe that a different majority would not seek a nationwide ban on abortion?”
This means there are just eight reporters whose job it is to cover D.C. for California newspapers. (5 at LA Times, 2 at McClatchy and me for
@sfchronicle
)
Not like California is the most populous state or anything...
I’ll let people make their own individual announcements, but yes the LA Times Washington bureau was decimated. They haven’t been filling jobs for two years now and that reduced number was cut even more today. There are five reporters left covering DC
Suuuper disappointed to see this medical misinformation continue. As journalists, we need to do better and stop publishing people who have been discredited.
@ConnieSchultz
@JohnFetterman
It also reveals to disabled journalists who supports them and who thinks they shouldn’t be allowed to do their jobs because of their disability.
If you are reading this and know more about what actions the Biden administration is considering taking regarding abortion access, I want to hear from you! DMs are open for my Signal, email is sstein(@).
From the depths of my memory (and closet), I just found a very special piece of
@TheLBDofficial
fan art. It’s been 10 years, and back at Vidcon 2014(?), I was given a poster of every word of Pride and Prejudice in the show’s logo, which I got everyone involved to sign 🥺
SCOOP: Sen. Dianne Feinstein has sued to remove the trustees of her late husband’s estate, alleging they have committed financial elder abuse, refused to respond to any requests for disbursements and improperly financially enriched his daughters.
@sfchronicle
Thanks to everyone sharing this! The latest news with Sen. Feinstein – which I reported yesterday – was that she missed an event celebrating the SF cable cars because she was "not feeling well and has a cough."
Today is important because… it’s Dilly’s birthday! My little pandemic girl is two 🥹 She got lots of cuddles, a new toy, and treats. I’m also donating to the wonderful program that rescued her, the Kitten College at

Personal news: Today is my last day at Bloomberg! I’m so grateful for everything I’ve learned, all of the amazing journalists I’ve worked with, and the impactful stories I’ve gotten to tell.
My next move is TBA!
And so one of the worst times in my life, an experience I wasn’t sure I’d survive, led to the creation of a program to address what I had struggled with and to help my now-coworkers.
With the endorsement of the California Democratic delegation, Vice President Kamala Harris has enough delegates to win the Democratic nomination for president. Story from
@SophiaBollag
and I coming shortly.
When I was a nobody college student, Gene was my friend. I can't wait for us to be old crotchety journalists and him to tell the young reporters about surviving cancer.
EXIT INTERVIEW: Rep. Jackie Speier and I spoke about her 50 years in public service—surviving five gunshot wounds at Jonestown; becoming the first member of Congress to speak openly about an abortion; and being outspoken on sexual harassment.

NEW: GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy has agreed to debate
@RoKhanna
, in what’s becoming a trend of GOP candidates debating Democratic politicians who aren’t currently running for the White House but are widely considered to be mulling a 2028 run.
NEW: Sen. Dianne Feinstein is battling for control of her late husband’s estate, in part to pay her significant medical bills. The suits have prompted practical questions: Why are the medical bills so high, and doesn’t her Senate insurance plan cover them?
This was supposed to be exciting personal news, but…I had a stroke in Paris last week.
It was terrifying, but relatively minor and I’m so, SO grateful for that. I’m headed home very soon.
Thank you for any well wishes, and I look forward to sharing good news in the coming weeks!
BREAKING: Biden told
@nancook
this morning that he has asked his staff to look at the possibility of a public health emergency regarding abortion access.
And if you have any tips about Sen. Feinstein, I'm always happy to talk to sources and discuss providing anonymity. My email is shira.stein

I’m undergoing a full day of screenings at the NIH today so I can participate in a clinical trial to treat my depression.
As nervous as I am to say that publicly, I know how important it is to destigmatize mental illness.
🚨 SCOOP 🚨

A NY consultant who reportedly published false news articles has created a website called the SF Inquirer. It's designed as a local news site but appears to be an effort to pressure lawmakers into supporting the consultant’s client, a Bay Area-based tribe.
New DiFi story: Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s career has been defined by gun violence and her efforts to prevent it. She said that as she closes out her final year in office, she hopes to do more “to fight the epidemic of gun violence."
A PHE “doesn't free very many resources. It's what's in the public health emergency fund and there's very little money, tens of thousands of dollars in it, so that didn't seem like a great option,” Jen Klein told WH press (h/t

This is the most thoughtful gift I've ever been received.
My friend printed and hand-bound a book of every single article I wrote about Covid-19 in 2020/21 for and wrote a beautiful foreword. (...here's hoping certain corporate overlords don't get mad.)
BREAKING: Sen. Dianne Feinstein, whose political career took her from the San Francisco Board of Supervisors to decades as California’s senior senator, died last night at the age of 90, sources familiar told the Chronicle. Confirming

I’m realizing that many people think my story is about the POA — it’s not. That is a single line in a larger story about lawsuits filed by Feinstein and her daughter about her late husband’s trust.
“The Secretary of Health and Human Services has to declare a public health emergency and it's not a question of legal authority that he has the authority to do that at any time. The question is, what authority does he gain by declaring a public health emergency?” Klein said.
I had a stroke last Sept. I had to pay the costs of the hospital stay, flights, etc upfront and request reimbursement.
The travel insurance denied everything & claimed it was a "preexisting condition." I submit to my regular insurer in March and STILL haven't received a response.

Thanks for this thread. Quick fyi that 988 does not currently have geolocation services, which means they can’t track you to your location unless you give it to them. (HHS staff told reporters this three days ago.)
If you ever think reporters don't REALLY try to get comment, just remember that today I've called eleven different phone numbers to try and get in touch with anyone from a media relations team (and I've already emailed them all twice).
Top of the Sunday A1 😭 Makes all the work over the last month (and late into Friday night) worth it.
Please read my story into the San Francisco Inquirer, which appears to be an effort to pressure federal lawmakers into supporting a Bay Area-based tribe.
My job is to get the information from the officials, not their flaks. PR folks, it's my job to work around you, and if you think otherwise, someone taught you wrong.
Hello twitter, I want to talk today about the state of the press relations in the United States. You may or may not know, but it is increasingly rare for your local journalist to be able to simply call an official to ask questions.
I began seeing a therapist again and started taking antidepressants for the first time in my life.
In 2021, I heard about a reporter working on a story about how reporting on the pandemic was affecting health care reporters.
Proud to know
@JenniferJJacobs
. One of the best reporters I’ve ever worked with and kindest humans I’ve ever known. She didn’t deserve this; the blame should lay at her editors’ feet.
My hospital shifted to crisis standards of care yesterday. Pediatric ER, ICU full. "...the collective group of hospitals is really at a point where we are concerned about our ability to serve the next patient" -Carl Eriksson, pediatric critical care

Proud to see so many friends, colleagues and journalists I admire standing up against the pseudoscience and misinformation in the NYT’s reporting on transgender health care. I stand with them.
Her email, that article and the many sources for it — myself included — led to discussions within the Chronicle about the trauma reporters were experiencing from doing their jobs.
This ruling means I can’t cover stories about LGBT folks, disabilities, child abuse, or any other number of issues.
Solidarity with my friend

What I didn’t know — and didn’t find out until today — was that a reporter across the country,
@erinallday

OPINION: A 28-year-old transgender man named Audrey Hale appears responsible for the Nashville shooting. That’s a tragedy, but no excuse to crack down on trans rights, writes Katelyn Burns.
In case anyone is curious,
@PLAYairlines
is taking no responsibility for the fact that another passenger took my bag off their plane while I WAS HAVING A STROKE and is making me pay over $150 to have my bag returned to me.
I hate using the power of the blue check, but I need to warn others.
I flew on

to Paris on Sept 18/19, during which I had a stroke.

@moorehn
Just to be clear — Biden pushed for an extension. Congress needed to pass it and didn’t (the Senate didn’t even vote on it because of Joe Manchin).
Some lawmakers, including
@AOC
, are playing peek-a-boo with the baby
@RepSaraJacobs
is holding (unsure if it's her baby) and I wish I was doing that instead of writing my story.
Almost exactly five months to the day since my stroke and I finally got back on my bike today 🥺
(If you’re new to the party, yes I had a stroke in September. My recovery is at 90-95% depending on the day.)
At the time, I worked somewhere that didn’t allow journalists to speak on the record about something that wasn’t their reporting, so I know I was likely to get turned down if I asked to do an interview. So I spoke to
@OliviaMesser
on background.
SCOOP: The Justice Department filed a lawsuit against Idaho Tuesday over the state’s law banning abortion after six weeks, according to a filing obtained by Bloomberg Law.

NEW: As the Bay Area braced for a “bomb cyclone,” Rep.-elect
@kevinmullin
walked into a different kind of storm Tuesday: his first day as a member of Congress.
I’ve talked about how burned out I became reporting on the pandemic, but I’ve been more private about the serious mental health impact. Basically, my mental health got about as bad as it can get.
This story would not have been possible without the support of my editors
@SaraLibby
@demianbulwa
@garciaruize
, who were fully behind me every step of the way. There were many others in the newsroom involved in it, including graphics, other editors, audience, etc. I’m so grateful
Moments ago, Senator-designate Butler met with Majority Leader Schumer. Schumer said, "She's going to be a great great senator. I'm excited, happy, thrilled that she's here. We know each other through EMILY's List."

They claimed several things, including that the trust *has* been paying her money. However, they declined to give me evidence for either claim and Katherine Feinstein's attorney didn't respond to requests for comment.
