Your opening sentence was uncalled for -especially by a Minister. The

make a valid point. All that was needed was an explanation as to how you are going to safeguard and promote skills for South African citizens particularly as there is such a large unemployment
@emilycpb
Emily I have read your comments and thread with great sadness. I qualified in 1972 and worked long hours as a houseman 24 hour shifts, a whole week on call. But someone senior was always in the background. Most of all the nurses were supportive. NHS culture must change to survive
@YSTeachingNHS
I take another view on the individual involved. They clearly did not realise the impact of their words and needs to learn. Most of us reacted with good humour although it was offensive and had its roots in disparaging cultural habits of BME communities. The trust should raise
@JacquiMckenzie6
This resonated with me as I was having a pedicure yesterday and there was great camaraderie amongst staff and the ethnic diverse clients. We spoke about holidays and the staff mainly from

It broke my heart when I worked as a GP in Brent to find patients who lived from a young age to their adult working life suddenly finding they had to prove they had a right to be here. I deeply regret thinking it was random and not identifying it as an

Why are some besotted with public school.I accidentally ended up working at a fancy hospital mainly for rich people. With huge fanfare a new doctor who went to Eton&Oxbridge was heralded.I was right not to be fazed.He was incompetent. He did not turn up one day-was high on drugs
On this day, 12 September 1977, Dr Steve Biko was murdered by the Apartheid Security Police. He was found naked and shackled on a hospital floor in Pretoria. We remember his life today.

My heart just bleeds reading this. There needs to be a full investigation about what was done to protect female students in this school

Dear Consultant
Thank you for your request for a call back. We regret that due numerous requests from hospital secretaries to write letters about how to prioritise their long waiting list we are unable to call back. We are happy to provide additional clinical info if requested
@DrSelvarajah
Selva my late mother after few days in Scotland asked me why did I not work in Scotland. There was no medical school for non-whites until 1952 in SA.Most Indian and Black medical pioneers studied in Scotland. Famous was Dr Goonam who wrote "The Coolie Doctor"

I recollect with sadness the awful experiences that refugees related to me from many countries but those from Bosnia and Tamilians from Sri Lanka were the most heart rendering
Thinking today of the Tamil families of the disappeared who have spent over a decade seeking truth and justice for atrocities committed under the man now fleeing Sri Lanka.
Gotabaya fleeing isn’t justice, or even meaningful reform, but it is something. (1/2)

So desperately sorry to hear about your family's nightmare escape route. Having worked with refugees from war torn zones it is unbelievable to hear about the resilience of parents to protect their children and the impetus of children to cope. 🙏🙏

I really am sorry to read this. Unacceptable. If reqd get a letter from your GP/specialist addressed to the principal. I feel upset for you. As a retired GP I found teachers considerate for children with

Virtual hugs Hannah. Just because you did not meet some arbitrary generic standard is not failure. Most of us have been there. My feeling about the British medical system it feels sometimes like that exams are a pass to institutions like Royal Colleges💐💐💐
Today is my eldest sister's birthday. She is 84years. My mother sent her to higher education despite protests from my paternal family who as was the custom to stop educating girls after the age of puberty. The first female educated from both sides of the family and made it easier
At my 5th booster yesterday,a voice behind said I know that voice. It was someone I worked with 25years ago. She said she always remembers me telling her "Don't sell yourself short". Motivated she is now in a senior position in NHS. I did not use the word racism but she knew
My eldest sister is 81 years old today. Our mentor. First female on both sides of the family to go to Uni. My Mother prevailed in spite of protestations from my father's side of family

My Papa who died 50years ago 2years before I qualified always said "Know your limits"while my mother translated to"Do not let others put limitations on you". Both my parents instilled in us never to live off the unhappiness of others.

Unacceptable. More importantly what did you do? We must not perpetuate insolence in the workplace or be complicit in promoting racism by not speaking out
Vuyelwa and I started med school together. We used to listen to music on her family's old gramophone. I came from UK for her service at med school and met her family.
Ntsiki Biko keeps a low profile but she met her husband Steve through her cousin and founding secretary general of SASO Vuyelwa Mashalaba. She advances the ideas of the Black Community Programs through the foundation she established in her late husband's memory.
@doctorrah
Systems failure and a busy unit can affect anyone. That aside how can the GMC suspend a doctor who continued to provide a sterling care esp during the pandemic 4yrs after the said case. Lesson to take do not multitask or take shortcuts. The System will not back you when it fails
@VelempiniN
Some of my GP colleagues in London complained about SA whites escaping Post-apartheid to UK in early 90' They complained they were so demanding. On the other hand the NHS was staffed by a high proportion of white SA doctors.

Working as a GP and in Public Health in some of the most deprived parts of London was heartbreaking to see many White and Black-Caribbean and Bangladeshi teens feeling so excluded from society. Many could not read/write and I helped with various forms -1
@African_Spring
Agree. Youth unemployment shows a failure of government. Channelling funds into training, skills building, apprenticeships is a way forward.
It is the senseless loss of lives, many young, is the saddest part. Then the fear and trauma affecting people who felt they were threatened. Health workers who could not go to work. Ill patients fending for themselves. The human cost cannot be quantified🙏😭
