A bit of personal news… I’m the new Senior Producer of Religion & Spirituality at
@npr
!! Can’t wait for lots of collaborations with brilliant colleagues in and out of NPR!
At a time when so much religion reporting has disappeared, it’s inspiring to hear that NPR is expanding its coverage of religion and spirituality with 2 new hires! Welcome
@burkedaniel13
and
@sarazonah
While you’re at
#RNA2024
, don’t forget to support your fellow journalists who are collectively working to demand better conditions. You can pick up a pamphlet with info on how to support our striking colleagues at the

So thrilled about the food panel organized by
@reporterdeepa
,
@NarangNimarta
, &
@HollyAMeyer
. A beautiful discussion & act of breaking bread. They even let me help serve chai & samosas from the local gurdwara. It feels good to watch ppl eat together during this moment.
#RNA2024
Brilliant, well-thought, beautifully civil discourse on the
#RNA2024
panel on how to cover the Israel-Hamas war. Well done, you all! (And thank you for all your efforts coordinating
@interfaithish
and
@PG_PeterSmith
!)
Second panel of the day…how to cover religious scandals, with an impressive slate of investigative journalists. (Plus I’ll take any excuse to listen to/debate with
@skestenbaum
!)

Fascinating conversation about caste and the way we understand it and cover caste discrimination in the US at
#RNA2024
. So glad
@reporterdeepa
and
@sonipaul
organized this, and didn’t shy away from a difficult conversation!
We took a beautiful & thoughtful trip to the Tree of Life synagogue & PGH JCC to talk about how to memorialize & move forward in the years to follow. It was organized by community leaders in PGH, including
@ShannonStraw
,
@keegangibson
, &
@PG_PeterSmith
. Ty all so much.

It’s so disheartening how many people (of different faiths) at
#RNA2024
have mentioned that journalists are still not building relationships w/ religious communities outside of calling them after a terrorist attack or something similarly horrible.
We’ve gotta work on this y’all
At the panel discussing the tragedy at Tree of Life, we are reminded that in Judaism, the mourner’s kaddish (the prayer said to memorialize someone) does not mention death, but does reference life.

"The term 'mainstream media' is now used almost as an epithet." -- Niraj Warikoo, on distrust of the media, particularly in religious communities
#RNA2024
At
#RNA2024
@Rowaida_Abdel
says that while Muslims in America don’t have a majority ethnicity, we almost always equate Muslims and Arabs, and thereby flatten the stories of non-Arab Muslims and non-Muslim Arabs.

I am humbled by such kind words from someone who I admire so deeply — who has taught me how to be an incredible colleague, collaborator, and thoughtful journalist. This means a lot, Howard. Thank you so much. ❤️
On the
#RNA2024
panel on Muslim frustrations around Islamophobia, Christine Mohamed from
@CAIR_PITTSBURGH
said she regularly invites journalists to iftars, community events, etc and they don’t engage. The only time they reach out is when something tragic happens.
@rachelnpr
@NPR
That means so much coming from you, Rachel!! Thank you — and I’m really hoping this means we can scheme up some collabs!! So excited about what you’re doing!

This will be an expansion of NPR’s coverage of religion in lots of ways. You should expect more stories, features, reporting from across the country, thoughtful conversations, and a deeper understanding of the way religion affects every part of public life.
Please read this incredibly important and well reported story from
@judejoffeblock
. And while you’re doing it, keep in mind this thread about the people who tried to go after her because she dared to do such reporting.
Niraj Warikoo reminds us that source reporting during non-crisis moments is critical. I cannot up this enough. *Especially* on the religion beat.

So grateful to be at
#RNA2024
, though this is the first year in several that I wasn't in Waco for the memorial on the anniversary of the end of the Waco siege. Lots to think about at this conference. Thinking of the Branch Davidian community today as well.
First panel of the day at
#RNA2024
is "Covering the Impact of the Israel-Hamas War in Your Community." So grateful that our membership is willing to have tough conversations. Especially when it means figuring out how to do better coverage.

I've spent a lot of time covering New Religious Movements, and am excited to cover many different types of religious and spiritual communities, as well as looking into the way religious life is waning and changing across the US. Keep listening!
