Last month, I started a new job
@NPR
and soon noticed an X thread gaining traction that purported to show a flyer from a Matamoros-based NGO urging migrants to vote for Biden. We dug in to find out the story behind the flyer and this is what we found.
Some of the people I reported on are trying to cast doubt on my work by highlighting a summer internship I had 20 years ago. For 10 weeks when I was 22, I did nonpartisan voter registration with an initiative affiliated with ACORN, well before that organization's problems.
Today was my first day
@AP
as an editor/reporter on the news verification team. I have long appreciated the important work they do debunking misinformation in both English & español. Excited to now join this great team!
There are now 53 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in La Palma, an immigration detention center in Eloy, Arizona- which is the fourth largest concentration of confirmed cases in ICE custody in the country. 869 confirmed cases nationally. About 50% of those tested are positive.
A man who spoke to Seattle Times & other media about his girlfriend's unusual ICE arrest is now detained facing deportation. He says an ICE officer stopped him at grocery store parking lot and said “You are the one from the newspaper."
This interview is an example of KJZZ's commitment to accurate reporting and transparency. In light of recent news, please remember the hard working reporters/editors/producers at KJZZ bring you excellent journalism and very much still deserve listener support.
As of today, 191 immigrants detained at Eloy Detention Center are infected with COVID-19 and are under isolation or monitoring. This is the largest known outbreak at a single immigration detention center in the country since the pandemic began.
Big news tonight.
@ACLU
won a victory in fight against family separation. Judge is ordering government to reunify parents with kids under age of 5 within 14 days & kids over 5 within 30 days, & immediately establish phone contact. Order says parents can’t be deported w/out kids
Today is bittersweet as it is my last day with my fabulous
@AP
colleagues. After first joining as an intern in Mexico City in 2009, and then returning many years later to help the News Verification team debunk misinformation, it has been a true joy and a privilege. Thanks all!
Nothing says fall in Phoenix quite like finally needing one of the cough drops you’ve been lugging around in your purse the entire insufferable summer only to find they all melted into a sticky mass that has now hardened and can't be broken apart.
Quite the headline on

I’ll be on

NEW: ICE has confirmed a 5th detainee who has tested positive with Covid-19. A 45-year-old Guatemalan man at the La Palma Correctional Center in Eloy, AZ. This is the first confirmed case of someone currently in an AZ detention facility. The other four known cases are in NJ.

I spent time with AZ dreamers this week who can't afford college now that they are denied in-state tuition. They want a legislative fix. A GOP state senator says she is drafting a bill to help college access & plans to introduce next week
