The current flag has two large horizontal strips, Yellow on the top & Red at the bottom. These two colors are called Arshana (Turmeric/Haldi) & Kunkuma (Vermilion) in Kannada. Every Indian knows these two to be the most sacred colors in Hinduism and are used in various rituals.

Apparently, Karnataka is the only state in India currently which has its own flag. The only other state which had a separate flag was J&K before the abrogation of article 370. Sikkim had its own flag before becoming an integral part of India in 1975.

The flag in the current form comes from this below flag designed by Ma Ramamurthy in 1964 during the Kannada movement which pioneered the interests of Karnataka and Kannada language. It was the official flag of political party 'Kannada Paksha' formed by him.

Another inspiration of the Karnataka flag for Ma Ramamurthy came from the Vijayanagara flag itself which had used these colors of Turmeric and Vermilion together as its banner. The icons of Sun, Moon, Dagger and Boar(Varaha) on it also formed the official emblem of the kingdom.

Gandaberunda, the two headed bird is also the current state emblem of Karnataka. The fascinating story of this bird, who is a form of Vishnu is part of both Vishnu and Shiva puranas. However the insignia in the flag was inherited from Vijayanagara where it was minted on coins.

First was the Flag of the Kingdom of Mysore, which was formed in 1399 during the rule of Vijayanagara king, Harihara II as a principality under it. The flag had vermilion and maroon colored strips, with a coat of arms displaying Gandaberunda, with elephants on either side.
