Feel good story for the week:
My 90-year-old grandma asked me to join her Wednesday “coffee girls group” as a “guest presenter” for all things SARS-CoV-2.
I brought my DIY air purifier and wore my KN95 while we discussed the research behind all their questions.
When I’m at school, it shouldn’t be my responsibility to make indoor air quality improvements for everyone.
I’ll happily do it for now, because I care about my health and the health of others, but it would be nice if these measures were implemented on a systems level.
Consensus is building about the importance of clean indoor air for our well-being.
I still believe that Universities, institutions for change and innovation, CAN and SHOULD lead the change.
Demonstrate to us how to create a safer environment that protects everyone.

Dear
@fordnation

@SylviaJonesMPP
:
As an Ontario taxpayer, I have been closely following the impact of the Wastewater Surveillance (WWS) Program on our communities. This program is crucial in providing objective information about the ongoing pandemic and the spread of illnesses.
My grandma called me this morning because of a feedback piece in the newspaper’s advice column today.
“It’s all the things you say too!”
I hope the advice columnists heed this reader’s recommendations in the last paragraph. It’s true; we have a duty to take care of each other.
It’s out! Our new state-of-the-science review of MASKS/RESPIRATORS in reducing transmission of respiratory infections. 13 authors (for our disciplines, see posts 3-4). 38000 words. 413 references. One conclusion: these devices work. For detail, read on. 1/
My grandma's friends keep getting COVID-19, and each infection could have been avoided with better masks/clean air:
•One was infected on their way to church
•One was infected at a bank and then hospitalized with a blood clot
•One was infected at a play and then passed away
Consensus is building about the importance of clean indoor air for our well-being.
I still believe that Universities, institutions for change and innovation, CAN and SHOULD lead the change.
Demonstrate to us how to create a safer environment that protects everyone.
Hi, I’m Ryan! I live in Canada, and I believe that we have a responsibility to protect each other from infection and reinfection. I continue to do my best to break chains of transmission through high-quality masking and cleaning indoor air. It’s easy!
What will you do?
What a busy weekend discussing indoor air quality and assembling DIY air purifiers with our
@UWaterloo
community, including some new friends!
Thank you to everyone for making this workshop a safe and welcoming space. Let's do it again soon!
What’s important to highlight from the authors’ findings is that during winter and summer breaks from school, a pediatric index case was significantly less frequent.
It’s not the kids’ fault. It’s the buildings they learn in. It’s the buses they travel in.
Clean. The. Air.

Trying to make our exam room safer for everyone this evening at
#UWaterloo

#COVIDisAirborne
We’ve got three air purifiers going, windows and doors open, and our CO2 monitor is relatively stable for now.
It’s a great day for cleaning indoor air at
#UWaterloo
!
Cracking open the windows in this (mostly empty) classroom dropped the CO2 from a stagnant 700 to ~500 ppm
We need more awareness about the importance of clean air for creating effective and safe learning environments
I told them I’d help them order more online if they found a style they liked, but this isn’t sustainable.
Governments/Manufacturers need to make respirator masks more accessible to the public, especially those without computers/internet access. This needed to happen yesterday.
Hey
@OntarioHealthOH
!
Could you please explain why the y-axis limits on our wastewater graphs increased from 2.0 to 4.0?
Increasing the y-axis limit causes the graph to appear to have less volatility, not as much growth, and a less steep line, distorting the results.
Thanks!
Hi

. Please take the time to read this article in its entirety. Then, please immediately reverse the cancellation of the wastewater surveillance program in Ontario. After that, provide more funding to expand the program further. Thanks!

Around this time last year UW reintroduced the mask mandate during the last few weeks of classes and throughout the exam period. I felt so much safer on campus.
Will the same decision be made again, given that the wastewater signal is 4-5x higher than it was last year?
Stares at
@UWaterloo
@UWLibrary
. As we wrap up the end of term, how many students will get sick--again--because they're breathing in unfiltered, virus-filled air? No transparency & no accountability re: the health & safety of our learning spaces needs to stop.
#CleanTheAir
Anyway, this felt like a small win and a nice way to help my grandmother’s friends understand what’s still going on, and how various engineering tools can help keep everyone safe.
Today I received a handwritten card from one of them, who appreciated all the information. 😷
Many older adults don’t have internet or tech-savvy children/grandchildren who want to help keep them safe.
Now that this coffee group understands how to better protect themselves, respirators need to be easier to find at stores, pharmacies, etc.
And they should be free.
I figured they wouldn’t have those tools (i.e. respirators), so everyone went home with new knowledge plus a goodie bag. They were so excited to try some tri-fold masks because all they could find in stores were baggy blues.
Public health is a provincial responsibility,
@fordnation
and
@SylviaJonesMPP
.
Wastewater surveillance should be maintained with high-quality, easy-to-access, and accessible data among regional sites.
We need stronger, not weaker, monitoring.

Could you buy and install $30M of CO2 & particulate monitors with transparent displays in all classrooms instead?
Installing these tools will do a lot more for the health of kids in school than vape detectors in washrooms.
Ontario's plan to remove distractions & vaping from school starts with:
☑️enhanced mandatory learning on perils of vaping
☑️$15M in expanded addiction & mental health supports
☑️$30M to install vape detectors
☑️consistent signage & PD across all schools

,
This morning I read in the WR Record that you are pausing our C0VID dashboard until the fall. I think this is a horrible mistake, and I urge you not to do this.
C0VID is not a seasonal virus and the public has a right to know this information. Thank you.
Hi
@WHO

I was wondering if you’d be interested in starting up one of these programs again, but for SARS-CoV-2.
I think if you did, and it was done well, we could eradicate some other viruses, too.
Global collaboration in mitigating airborne diseases would be pretty cool!
The proposed legislation is a game changer for improving indoor air quality and making Ontario's public schools and childcare facilities safer for everyone.

with high-quality respirator masks 😷.
Airborne viruses like flu and COVID-19 linger in the air we breathe daily.
Wearing a tight-fitting respirator mask will capture germs, protecting the wearer and those around them.
What about places where people have to go?
Kids in schools and on buses?
Students in college/university with mandatory in-person classes?
People seeking life-critical health care services in hospitals?
These places shouldn’t come with an “inherent risk of exposure”

A significant factor impacting progress to keep kids in class is infectious aerosols.
The solution is simple though: Improve the air quality, and you can support more kids and their educators to stay in class.

Additionally, I would like to know where the funding for this program is being redirected, as transparency in such matters is crucial for maintaining public trust.
If the funding for this program is not being cancelled, I would appreciate it being funded indefinitely.
WWS has been instrumental in our fight against infectious diseases. Without this information, many Ontarians, including older adults, people living with disabilities, and those who are immunocompromised, cannot make informed decisions about their safety in our province.
School buses are crowded indoor settings
#LikeSchools
!
Both settings require clean indoor air that is well-ventilated and filtered.
Kids, educators, and bus drivers have a right to clean air, free from particulate matter and airborne viruses.
Students & their drivers deserve a safe & healthy ride to school, including clean air to breathe!
School buses have poor filtration & little ventilation (air quality = bad) 😔
Wearing a mask & cracking open a window can make a difference to keep everyone safer on buses.
