I'm happy that my manuscript “The International Spillover Effects of US Trade Policy Uncertainty” has been published at Economics Letters. This is my first paper acceptance in 2022!

My paper on informal loans in “Thailand” was desk rejected because using “Indian” data is restrictive 😳
Also, we didn’t use or mention any sentiment at all. 😢
I am excited to share that the Middle Tennessee State University Board of Trustees has approved my tenure and promotion case.
I will be Associate Professor of Economics starting Fall 2023 🤩🥳
I do research on weekends because I enjoy doing it. To me, solving a model is like making art. I do whenever I feel like I want to do.
Grad students don’t need to follow anyone’s advice. It’s your choice, based on your preferences and constraints.
Perhaps unpopular opinion: Micro and Macro sequences for 1st-year PhD Econ students should be renamed to
“Static and dynamic optimization: applications to economics”
My paper has been accepted for publication in European Journal of Political Economy.
I thank the co-editor and the reviewers, who read my work six rounds, for helpful suggestions.
I started this paper because I got into a heated discussion on FB and I wanted to prove my point.
I made (at least) 5 research-management mistakes as a young academic. You should avoid these.
1/ You should drop everything possible when you get an R&R and turn that right away.
I'm excited to share my recently accepted paper "Consequences of Thailand’s 2006 Military Coup: Evidence from the Synthetic Control Method" in the European Journal of Political Economy
Free access (until 24 Nov):
Editor in a rejection letter: “However, I just hope to send an individual note to let you know that your paper has a neat idea and might very well fit some of the other fine journals which have space for short papers.”
I’m very grateful to his kind letter.
I am excited to share my new working paper "Trade Theory with Behavioral Agents."

Comments and suggestions are very welcome! A short thread will come soon 😊
I'm very happy that my paper "The Economic Aftermath of Thailand’s 2014 Military Coup: Evidence from the Synthetic Control Method" has been accepted for publication in Asian Economic Journal.
I hope I can safely enter Thailand 😆
Job interview in 2016: “How do you see yourself in the next 5 years?”
me in 2016: “A trade economist who is an expert in optimal tariffs and trade agreements”
My most cited paper at this moment: a covid paper.
I often see empirical papers that their regressions have “firm age” and include “firm FEs” and “year FEs” (or “age” with person FEs and year FEs)
I feel like firm age could be absorbed entirely by the FEs 🤔🤔🤔
I know JMCs are working really hard. I would be happy to read your papers (in any stage) and give you compliments to make your day. Feel free to DM me.
I'm very happy that my work with Doungdao Mahakitsiri has been published 🥳🥳🥳
We study characteristics of pure exporters (who have more than 90% of revenue from selling abroad). Around 1/4 of Thai exporters are pure exporters.

I was notified that my Tenure & Promotion Review is due on Thursday, September 1, 2022.
I am working on two R&Rs and hope they could be converted to publications before the T&P review deadline.

Middle Tennessee State University advances to R2 status for doctoral research activity.
Also, MTSU’s Economics PhD program has made the U.S. News and World Report ranking of top U.S. programs for the first time. (ranked No. 134 on the list for 2022)

Wow.
(It's not clear that the boost to downstream outcomes like flyouts could hold in long-run equilibrium, or that added visibility really is the mechanism driving it. But still, pretty striking, QED!)

I thought about starting to celebrate Daron Acemoglu day, which is the day of the year that my total citations get surpassed by Acemoglu's citations FROM THE CURRENT YEAR. This year it's today, the first day at which Google Scholar reports 2022 citations. He's at 365 already...

! Do you teach gains from trade in your class? I present to you a welfare gains formula!
Under CES preferences and a CES production function, welfare gains can be captured by expenditure and production shares, and elasticities!
Grad Students: Networking is critical for success in academia. But the real question is WHO to network with. I’ve known grad students who will spend time at conferences drinking beers in the bars with grad students from unranked programs. Is that 1/
Worked with a student in Thailand who is extremely good such that I wanted to write a very strong recommendation for her PhD applications. Her senior thesis is better than my third-year (PhD) paper. 😳
Flight attendant: Is there a doctor on the plane?
Me: Yes, but I'm not that kind of …
Flight attendant: The pilots are debating whether the U.S. should join the CPTPP.
Me: Okay. I’m here.
So I teach microecon today. I asked students what would happened if I gave everyone an automatic A. They told me about wrong incentives and bad reputation. Wow! These students know optimal contracts and signaling, and they want to work hard to earn an A! 😍
I’m excited to share that my joint work with Tanapong Potipiti, a paper titled "Why does the WTO treat export subsidies and import tariffs differently?", has been published at the Review of World Economics.

I don't have good career advice. At conferences, I talked to any presenters and grad students. I do committee works and any admin jobs the department wanted helps. I engaged with student activities and joined a club. I never declined referee requests.
I'm myself.
Please don’t ask these questions at Thanksgiving dinners
- When will you graduate?
- How many job interviews do you have?
- Where will you work after graduation?
- When will you publish?
- When will you get tenure?
🥺🥺🥺🥺

I will offer new professional service: screening teaching evaluations.
I will look at your evaluations, keep positive responses, then combine and rephrase negative responses to constructive and polite suggestion.
I’m quite sure this service gives large welfare gains to us 😉
