Just submitted a monster edited volume - 47 essays by authors from 12 countries - the Routledge Companion to the Global Renaissance, ALL open access, short object-centered essays for students and teachers charged with teaching art history of the early modern
The thing people often don’t understand is how early you have to get up Mardi Gras day AFTER you have spent 5 days eating trash and parading. Truly a test of the body and Carnival spirit
Ok I rag on Tulane on here all the time but we just found out we are getting vaccine and along w med and public school staff & 70 plus, I am so damn proud to report we are giving out first vaccines to custodial and food service staff
Today I got to go in the storage of the NYS museum and this sequence of photos Aaron took of me really captures when you realize a painting is a bad 19th copy….
So I have 3 changes of clothes, 2 kids, no childcare and I have to change my class to online instruction in 2 weeks? And I’m not supposed to go home? HOW EXACTLY?!??
⚠️ We are closing campus and cancelling classes through Sunday, September 12. Classes will resume online only beginning Monday, September 13 through Wednesday, October 6 to give the city time to repair and reinstate power and other critical services.
Extremely niche local tweet: I’d love a history of the Earhart expressway. Like who decided to build a mini freeway between uptown and Elmwood? Super grateful for it, it just makes no logistical sense to me.
Welp I got my first expletive-laden shouty email from a dude who is mad his book isn't being reviewed in the Art Bulletin. Apparently I am an 'associate Professor from a minor university' who doesn't understand his brilliance. 🙄🙄
Love being told we may need to 'teach/work remotely' Wednesday. Good sirs, do you REALLY think we will have power/internet to do so? Just call it. You told us you built in extra days for storms. USE THEM.

She was a tall, athletically built girl (6 feet at least) and long torso - very shy, got knocked up first time she had sex, fairly supportive parents, became a local cautionary tale
I know it’s syllabus time so - if you have a global Renaissance class, here’s a new entirely OPEN ACCESS resource for you. I’m very proud of our 47 authors. Short (~5k) object centered essays on a wide range of objects !!
My neighbor just asked me to join her on the porch for cocktails and some handmade duck pies, so we can enjoy the high school band practicing. Sometimes this city gives.
I just had to yell at a white woman in Audubon in Park whose dog is Offleash? She was like ‘oh he’s good!’ my response: well my dog isn’t. Other dogs change their behavior when there’s an unleashed dog running around. Her response: continue to walk by and not leash her dog. 🤬
Some poor Dutch colleagues just tried to schedule a meeting for Tuesday and I had to explain that I would be drunk and costumed by 930 am. Just blew their Protestant minds.

I am giving a keynote on Thursday evening UK time. Here's the title slide (working on the others now). Come from the comfort of your sofa!
asked 10 year old what she wanted for dinner: 'oh I brought leftovers home!'
me, puzzled: ?
her (pulls a ziplock bag of spaghetti & red sauce from her backpack) 'the lunch lady gave me too much and I had a plastic bag on me.'
me, and teen: 'we have approx 1000 questions here.'
Self promotion always seems awkward, but I'm delighted to announce my forthcoming book will be supported by a publication grant by the Association of Print Scholars! Wrote the application while evacuating, see
@PSUPress
for the book next winter!
@Nicole_Cliffe
Best part was her (very nola) response - ‘I was in a hot tub having sushi, drinking LAST WEEK’ now has very healthy lovely 6 year old boy!
Aaron Hyman’s new book just arrived at my office. Not only is it brilliant, it matches my manicure, BUT ALSO I am referred to as the book’s fairy godmother which tickles me immensely!
I can’t in good conscience recommend young women go to colleges in states where taking a morning after pill could make them a criminal. Pay attention ladies.
Extremely niche Nola tweet. Getting undressed to take a much needed post parading soak and when I took off my bra the entire beaded contents of a poorly strung set of glass beads scattered across my bedroom. I will be stepping on tiny beads FOR MONTHS
It’s come to my attention we have only a handful of applications for this job. It’s TT 2:2 load, any field Asian art history - job description is weird, but it is a real job, research $, we are nice people. We want an art historian! Please spread the word
The annual Friday before Mardi Gras when I have to write a bunch of a professional emails that also include some variation of the phrase: 'um yeah so NO ONE HERE IS DOING ANY WORK TIL WEDNESDAY and sorry bout that, bear with us'💜💛💚
Yet again having to scoop up my 15 lb dog, when an unleashed 90 lb dog comes running towards her, with its owner, running behind it screaming ‘ oh, she’s very nice!’ Well, my little goofball princess isn’t! Especially not when a huge animal is bearing down on her. LEASH YOUR DOG
@Nicole_Cliffe
Ooh I have another - 40 something friend post breast cancer, had back pain, felt lethargic, gave the x ray tech a heart attack when he say 6 month along fetus in x ray
The thought that TU faculty are supposed to teach online in 10 days is so laughable - I can't get a hold of half of my dept, many of my colleagues don't have materials and/or power. I will never forgive TU for not even verifying we were all okay before informing us of this 'plan'
One thing about me is I like to power dress for meetings I know are going to be confrontational. I don’t wear suits, but I like to wear patterns that express where I’m at. Today calls for snake dress, and a strong red lip, my Latina gold hoops, and a killer heel. Wish me luck.
World’s best neighbor continues to be the best. She just gifted me this coat, which with my current frazzled hair brings me one step closer to the becoming Fran Drescher/the Nanny, one of my style icons.
How I know it’s Mardi Gras: going to bed tipsy w some glitter in my hair, something is blinking in my room and there’s approximately 30 lbs of plastic toys and stuffed animals and 86 hula hoops in my living room. 12 more days of this how?
Okay I can officially announce one part of some very big and exciting news for us (more is coming!) We
@TulaneArt
are hiring an Asst or Assoc. Professor of African Art History, any period, any region! 1/2
A bit of good news - the article below won the 2019-2020 Franklin Pease G.Y. Memorial Prize from the Colonial Latin American Review. Guess that means I’m a real Latin Americanist! Honestly delighted w this after an impossible year
Guys I’m on a plane full of hipster tourists coming to New Orleans for Mardi Gras and I’m in no mood for it. How I’m not hungover is a miracle and book party was epic but now I need to get home wo murdering people intending to recreate that bad NYT piece
Driving uptown around Tulane is going to give me a rage induced aneurysm in the next couple mos: I swear to God, they are digging up streets to produce inescapable one-way nightmares. My kingdom for an actual city manager who may be looked at a map before approving all of this
Keep telling you all that
@MosquitoSupper
happy hour cannot be beat. The bar menu has gumbo and boiled peanuts and garlic shrimp and pâté and truly the best oysters in town.
I’m at an airport bar next to a couple who absolutely should not be going on a trip together. One more drink and I’m pulling her aside and telling her to go to Greece by herself - plenty of good looking men in the sea, friend.
Over 200 of us faculty, representing a range of political views, have signed this letter to the editor, decrying the use of force against our students this week.
I am very proud to have completed my first book talk in Spanish, which isn't as good as it should be. I was raised in a gen of Chicanos who wanted to assimilate & thus didn't teach us. I often feel shame/guilt around this & I am trying my best to unlearn that and just use it more
I feel that the book review I’m writing is going to turn into a polemic on ‘global washing’ in art history - the reinscription of colonial power dynamics in work purporting to be ‘global’ in its scope
Ok so my brother and nephew caught the largest redfish in the state of LA so far this year, as well as a bunch of drum, catfish and more redfish. It is all now in my freezer. Drop your favorite recipes here please!!
We are pleased to announce Stephanie Porras is the recipient of the 2021 Publication Grant from APS to support her forthcoming book, "The First Viral Images: Maerten de Vos, Antwerp Print, and the Early Modern Globe" - congratulations Stephanie!
