さっき生物工学会若手の会で講演させて頂いたのですが、開会で初代会長？の先生が「日本は益々厳しくなる、自分を持て、海外に出よ」的な事を強い調子言っていて、自分の世代を省みず、海外にもいないのに、日本が何を若い世代に背負わせているのか理解していないことばかり言っていてやばかったです。

少しフォローしておきますと、仰っていることは概ね正しかったと思うのです。強くなり、海外に出ることは良いです。ただあの世代が、自分達の世代が作ってきた社会・経済・科学にリーダー当事者として責任を述べず、若者にだけより強くなることを調子良く述べられていたので、それはちょっと違うなと。

日本でも任期付きやテニュアポジションの数が議論になっていますが、そもそも大きく考え直して、皆が任期なし、5年おきに更新評価を受けるtenure time loopingがアカデミアの進化に良いのではないかという提言を @NatureBiotech に寄せました。国境を越えたアカデミア再考の種になればと思います。

基礎研究の成果は論文として世界に公開されるのであって、国家に帰属するのではないという考え方、僕自身その通りだと思っているのだけれど、「では基礎研究に金を出すことはどう国益に帰結するの？(なぜ国が金を出さなきゃダメなのか)」という疑問に対する切れ味の良い答えを用意できないでいる。

バンクーバーに来て2年半。コンビニはなく、22時には街が眠りますが、家の冷蔵庫にはアイスティーがあり、朝はコーヒーを挽いて水筒に入れるようになりました。上の二人はこちらが学ばせてもらうほどに育ち、赤子は歩き回っています。忙しいのは変わりませんが、豊かだなと感じれることが増えました。

最近Nature本誌の査読を2件立て続けにやりましたが、各reviewerのコメントとフォーマットが校正されて著者に返されるの知りませんでした。UBCもオフィスがグラントを中身までフルレビューしてくれますし、なんというか英語と文化にハンデあっても生きやすいところは生きやすいんだなと感じました。

Benches installed in @yachielab Osaka. The same custom that we had in Tokyo back in 2014-2020 (inspired by the benches of my postdoc lab @FPRoth at @SinaiHealth ). Kudos to the team especially @Morihideponn . Nostalgia. @yachielab UBC and Osaka will create good science together.

Vancouver was beautiful today. Went to Cypress🏔 backcountry trail with 12 yo and 8 yo. Black mountain trail was harder this year but they made it! Proud of them😊

Posted a new preprint to arXiv👋 We developed a Python package QUEEN to freely design synthetic DNA circuits and plasmids and generate GenBank format files. Yes... ok... does that sounds boring...? Well, it does something amazing (1/8)

@KeikoUTorii @hiroko_bannai @tsuyomiyakawa 日本はニュートンという竹内均氏がNational Geographicsに憧れて作ったと言われる雑誌がありますが、あれが日本の科学与えた影響はとても大きいと思います。受験産業をハックして、あれが週刊誌になって家庭に届きやすくなるようにはならないのか、科学者達がどっぷり貢献できないのかとか思います。

@K_Miyamichi えーー、著者がもっと力強く打てるようにアドバイスするのが査読、打たれても打たれても倒れないようにしたり、かわせるようにするのが論文執筆だと思っています。誰かのこと殴っても自分の仕事は良くならない。。。。

えー、全然同意できないです。。成功は青天井なのでどんどんすると良いのでは？そもそも何を成功とするかは個人の価値観ですし。社会的成功も本人がそこに縛られなきゃ良いだけな気がします。

これはたぶん早くにPIになることの是非につながる話だと思う。ちょっと違う観点で、研究で身を立てたいなら、大学院の時に成功しすぎない方がよいと思う。大学院の時に成功しすぎると、ポスドクの時に過去の自分を更新するのが大変。もっというと研究のピークはPIの時にもっていくのが理想。

@rei_nari これ、この基準を当たり前として使っていくと結構な倫理問題になりかねないと思っています。基本的にはリファレンスは本人が聞いても良いと言う人にしか連絡しては行けないと思います。過去に何かがあって、不当にその人の不利になる証言をする可能性もあります。

Here we re-introduce GPS-seq, a theoretical framework for scalable, high-resolution spatial transcriptomics, with @geoffschieb 's lab. Receiving several suggestions, we moved the methods to the main document and published the codes (thanks, Twitter!😌).

一昨日ワシントン大学とMicrosoftから以下の大規模DNAデータストレージ論文が発表されたのですが、Reed-Solomon符号や似たような配列のランダム化などcomputer scienceとbiologyのセンスがフル動員されていてしびれました。

私は「今の生物学は目の前に現存する試料しか解析できない。分子生物学は大規模情報を得るために対象を殺してしまうし、タイムマシンもない。それなら、細胞・分子イベントのレコーダーとデジタルレコーディングデバイスとしての人工DNAを細胞に埋め込んだものを作りましょう」という話をします！

男女比1:1の世界でアファーマティブアクションを取ることが逆差別とかっていうロジックが自分の利益の追求でしかなく想像力の欠如だということに気がついて欲しい。明日突然真に女性が男性と同じように活躍をする世の中になっていて、その中で自分が研究者として科学を前進させる姿を想像したらいい。
