just looked up “orca and whale shark interactions” and the first and only documented photo is an orca looming over this young whale shark who looks absolutely petrified

i like to leave it up to interpretation BUT my idea when painting it was that the whale had killed the seal. the seal’s response could either be interpreted as agreement (the whale is inherently evil) or disagreement (the whale was simply doing what it was born to do)
glad you guys like my silly little tweet but it’s finally time for me to mute it. remember that this is an orca AND whale shark appreciation zone. both species are wonderful and are simply just trying to survive. don’t be weird about it

this piece stemmed from some personal turmoil i’ve had recently but also from observations i’ve made as a killer whale enthusiast— a lot of folks are quick to demonize predator animals because their natural behavior can be bloody and unsightly
@FabrizioART
i’m like 99% sure the orca in the image is either a female (so between 18-22 feet on average) or a juvenile male (around the same size-ish), so as far as whale sharks go, a bit small!
@whalesandisaac
the comparison is just in such poor taste. it belittles the suffering that actual slaves have gone through and still go through to this day

i believe they were fighting against the israeli military? could be wrong but there’s more info if you search “the palestinian man” and scroll

Chediak-Higashi syndrome, leucism, and albinism in killer whales (Orcinus orca): an informative and speculative thread!

.x on instagram. this is blatant art theft and it’s disappointing to see this spread around. OP’s art is very, very good and intricate, so go support them instead!!
can you guys imagine if seaworld did something like this but with shapes of marine life? would be a lot less stressful on the animals, would require less of a cleanup crew, etc.
and yeah— i’m going to hide replies that are like, overly negative or anthropomorphizing the orca that’s literally just trying to feed itself 👍 it’s nothing personal, i just don’t like those conversations happening under my posts. just a preference
// blood , dead animal
found another photo of this guy and my GOD. also very morbid observarion but blood is so strange looking and vivid against their white coloration and i never noticed till now

Been meaning to post this super cool video from my trip for a while, so here it is: an interesting example of mimicry in a 2-year-old bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) named Spark
tempted to make myself a shirt that says “if i catch you violating the marine mammal protection act i’m fucking stealing something out of your house !!!” with a bunch of stock images of whales

@aqualuvsuotd
dolphins can be weird but i don’t like the trend of hating them bc people often just use it to make really gross jokes ☹️ applying human morals to animals is exactly what made people hate sharks in the first place so i feel like doing it again with another species is reductive
don’t understand why people’s taekaway here is “dolphins actually aren’t smart at all” (???) and not “dolphins are still very very smart but for reasons more complicated than we initially understood”
The funny thing about this is that the scientific community has a really hard time letting go of phrenology, so science centres and aquariums in the 90’s were full of these two brains next to each other and write-ups about how dolphins were probably smarter than we could imagine
worried that people are taking this as “captive orcas are smaller because the space is tinier/they’re starved/they’re depressed/etc.” and not “captive orcas are just a different type and are inherently smaller due to genes.” pls look into the thread i’m begging you
@erraticpuIse
loving orcas is very hard, because i also love the animals they prey upon ☹️ i’m torn between feeling bad for the whale shark and feeling good that the whale and her family ate that day
i can’t publicly show off most of my best art pieces from this year because they’re very spoilery in terms of my novels ☹️
here, however, is probably THE overall favorite. this traditional piece is 14x17 inches and was done almost entirely with micron liner pens in 3 days
katina is finished
from nose to tail, she’s about 17 inches long. katina was constructed over the course of 3 days and is, by far, my favorite sewing project i’ve ever done
