My heart breaks for Toki and those that have cared for her for so many different reasons. Estimated to be one of the oldest orcas in human care yet in the smallest habitat for an animal her size. She fought for so long, but now she’s at rest with Hugo. 💔

People say zoos and aquariums suck, but seem to forget that there are people (like me) who dedicate their personal and educational careers to making those places the best they can be. I'm not spending four years in school and 20K+ to go out and abuse animals. That's insane. 😐

Along with it came an unfortunate misunderstanding of the goals of accredited zoos and aquariums, as well as provided a figure head for people to bounce off of to hate on reputable organizations. That is still going on today.

The release of Blackfish created a sudden and massive wave of interest in both captive and wild orca, than did all the years of orca being captive in marine parks. And that momentum is still going today.

So here’s just a general reminder. If SeaWorld rescues an animal, they are doing it for the GOOD of the animal. They are NOT capturing it to ‘put it in their collection!’ The US government and NOAA deems animals releasable or non releasable based on circumstances. Ugh 😑

Literally imagine if that orca was brought back to SeaWord for care. The amount of people that don’t know that SeaWorld is probably the only place capable of rehabilitating and rereleasing a fully grown orca is extremely unfortunate. Stop the hate, honestly though.

The incidences of bent or collapsed dorsal fins in wild cetaceans is more common than a lot of people think. It’s time to accept that, and do actual research on why/how it happens so we can finally get a solid answer, rather then endless speculation.

Ping gave birth to a beautiful calf last night around 9:13PM at Coral World. I was lucky enough to be able to witness the process and get a chance to get up close and see the little sausage a few hours after birth. Mom and calf are doing very well!

In 2018, the largest and most expansive killer whale habitat ever made was supposed to open at SeaWorld San Diego, with similar installments to follow shortly after in Orlando and San Antonio. However, this incredible feat would never see the light of day.

Just a casual reminder that dorsal fin collapse is not always an indicator of poor health in cetaceans, and actually is more based on environmental factors. Would love for scientific studies to be done on literally just why/how this is a thing.

I’m no longer going to stand by while people say ‘fuck zoos’ for social media clout. Our planet is dying. The animals that we hold so close to our hearts are dying. Accredited zoos and aquariums are the leaders in saving the planet, and we should be thanking them for it.

Tilikum was and forever will be the most well known killer whale in history. To the general public who didn’t know him, he was the animal rights movements biggest talking point. To many of us, he was an incredible animal who was beloved by so many, and will always be remembered.

Friendly reminder: Dorsal fin collapse in cetaceans is more common in the wild than we were initially led to believe. Unless noted by other extraneous factors (obvious malnutrition/peanut-head, etc) it has nothing to do with the health and well being of the animal.

It’s been 11 years since we lost Dawn Brancheau, and with it an unforgettable legacy lost to history. My heart goes out to her family, her friends and her fans who saw and supported her doing exactly what she loved doing. She was an icon. A dreamer. The best of the best.

An orca calf stranded overnight in New Zealand. Attempts to refloat the calf were unsuccessful. Ingrid Visser, who has been overseeing the entire operation, has determined that the calf cannot survive on its own if its family is not found.

I’m sorry, but it’s pretty basic animal knowledge that we shouldn’t reinforce petting, rubbing and ‘massaging’ with a stranded animal. This calf should of been in a facility by now, cared by professionals in a disease free/clean environment. Do they want to keep it as a pet? 😟

Before you completely downplay the professionalism, intellectualism and pure heart and spirit of animal trainers, just remember that Ken Peters, the trainer who was almost drowned by Kasatka in that famous Blackfish video, still works at SeaWorld San Diego.

Tbh love when @SeaWorld gets credit when credit is due. I know every time SeaWorld’s rescue program goes any kind of mainstream, it changes minds and hearts, and gets a lot of attention. People that are on the fence about visiting might now reconsider. Like a domino effect!

The science behind dorsal fin collapse in cetaceans, specifically killer whales is an interesting avenue of research. Especially considering Ulises - who’s dorsal fin was leaning one way in Barcelona, then hardened and curled the opposite way like a hook at SeaWorld San Diego.

If you say “I hate SeaWorld.” But go to Disney World, Six Flags Parks, zoos and aquariums across the globe. You are supporting the same thing by visiting these places. The standards of care are basically all the same, unless the facility is not accredited, which SW is! 🤷‍♂️😂
