Expanding on The Tapering Athlete The word taper gets thrown around so often that it has created a stir in the endurance community. It should be the most straightforward part of the process, but due to individual variability, there is no ideal way to go about it. Some

General to Specific training At some point the emphasis on "easy this, easy that" needs to shift to address performance demands. For an athlete starting out, this can be a tricky area to navigate. How much? How should I feel? Some guidelines below: •Identify the performance

A day I’d rather not have had happen. Avoided collision with a vehicle and went over the bars. A trip to the hospital confirmed nothing broken, just a beat up face. Don’t know what this means for DSM 70.3, but may still be able to attend the race. Thankful it was not worse!

Man!!! Can’t catch a break on the bike! Very solid day minus the 7 minutes lost due to a mechanical. My 3rd wheel issue at a race in the past year. NO excuses. Need to be better. Once I got that sorted, actually rode pretty well! Swim was the easiest I have felt at that pace.

Talking with a fellow swimmer at the pool this morning, we got to discussing the difference between 95% effort and 100% effort in the pool. A full gas and effortful swim does not always mean faster if you are fighting the water; huffing and puffing far too early to hang on.

The Independent Athlete One of my triathletes I coach has his second sprint tri this weekend. For his first race, I gave him the race day plan, written down, and said go execute. He did that and it was a successful day. For this second race, I told him to write his own race

Using social media Over the past 2 years, I have made some shifts in how I operate on the social media playing field. •I got more involved with X •Completely dropped Instagram •Started writing a weekly newsletter My goals on here remain simple: •Don't engage in drama

2023 Season review—Part 3/6: 70.3 Des Moines June 2023— Nearly ending up under a vehicle 13 days out from your A race is not exactly the way you want to finish up a training camp. Looking back, I am very lucky to be alive, but I lied to myself in the days leading up that I was

Taking a course next week on treating Masters Athletes. Many followers on here and patients I see in the clinic fit this mold, so hoping to gain some perspective. Will share some of the important notes!

Curiosity Part of the fun of endurance training is experimenting on myself to be better informed as an athlete or a coach. After seeing a few posts from @JimGalanes on the importance of improving across a number of weeks, I designed a high-intensity protocol that spanned 3

A new skills foray My bike power for my body size had always been decent, but speed has always been an issue. There is zero doubt that diligence to hold aero position is a fast track to covering more ground in less time. My diligence to do so, however, sometimes lacks. The

Had a patient yesterday who is a 4x Ironman— 👨‍🦳“Yeah I retired from tri in 2021.” 👨“Sweet! Do you still ride or run every now and then?” 👨‍🦳“Oh ya know just 12 or so hours per week. A few 3 hour rides and swim every other day” Narrator: The 65+ version of Max suddenly had

There is this middle-age fella whom I see often at the pool. Streamline + 3 dolphin kicks off every wall…every wall. A pleasure to watch and I aspire to have that level of discipline

Out of my comfort zone this morning! Local club 🚴 TT The cycling folks like to sleep in so was able to knock out 4.8K 🏊 beforehand. Also was able to commute to and from! 304W is one of the better efforts I have done. Probably should have gone harder 😂 Extreme head/tail wind

Proof today that I do not know what I am doing! First ever duathlon as a way to get a nice dose of Severe domain intensity. Made every mistake in the book but still managed 2nd OA. Full write up to come later in the week.

Thanks to everyone for the kind words! Haven’t figured out how I feel about the day yet. Certainly a distance that is a notch above my current mental/physical abilities. A great starting point, but now back to some shorter stuff 🤣

I’ll have more thoughts later, but first 70.3 in the books! Swim felt great, discouraged on the bike despite good power, ran good for about 15K. Absolutely smashed. A well put on event!

@BowTiedGatorDDS Ideas/thoughts on managing the dental demand as an endurance athlete? Sugar is at times unavoidable in this space. Carry a toothbrush to work/the gym? Brush more often?

If you are not re-reading your journaling, you are missing out. No, I do not mean looking back every day and clinging to your thoughts, but rather a quarterly or midyear check in. I recently did this and had a few musings. ———————————————————————— A reminder for how my

Breathing It is a critical element to swimming well and a tough skill to master for a novice swimmer. *Gasp* *Hold breath* *Take a few strokes* *Gasp* You're panicked, overexerting, and certainly not being as efficient as you could be. This seems wild because your aerobic

I have been thinking about this question all day. There are plenty, perhaps a majority, of the population who do not enjoy exercise...thus they are less likely to do it. Furthermore, we continue to make the messaging on exercise more confusing via social media (see linked

Serious question. Is an hour per day of activity a “big ask”? (Rephrase) Maybe it *is* a big ask. But is that a reason not to do it?

Solid insight from Tim. It has been made clear to me by my bike fitter that a stable foot base is essential. It is THE point of contact. I spent a whole season with calf issues that cleared when we moved the cleats back and also added a small forefoot wedge to allow the toes

Two opinions around cycling shoes for triathlon.. 1) The pressure of the pedal spindle should be behind the ball of the foot. Not on it and certainly not in front of it. When this adjustment is made power output for heart rate tends to go up in sustained intervals and many
