I ran all the numbers, and I believe 25,000 email subscribers is the "smallest" audience needed to generate $1,000,000/year as a creator.
This is with 5 revenue streams and realistic conversion rates.
Let's dive in ➕ ✖️ ➗
I have 3 kids, a full-time job, workout 4x per week, coach baseball, volunteer at church, and spend the majority of my weekend time with my family.
Here's what a normal week looks like 👀
The Simple Time Block Breakdown ⏰
🔴 Work = 40-45 hours, little early/late

Men, it's your job to set the emotional tone for your family.
Wake up happy, energetic, grateful, & full of love. Tell everyone in your house *multiple times* you are thankful for them.
Send everyone to bed with prayer, positive reflections, & love. It will change your life.
Not gonna lie.
I used to get really bummed out when my 4 year old woke up at 6AM after I had done the "hard work" of waking up at 5AM.
"This is my time! I need to work/exercise/meditate/read!"
I was fighting reality and no one was winning.
So I tried this instead.
There's a feedback system I use with my children every day that's changed how I praise them (or correct them).
It's called DLP, which stands for Describe, Label, Praise.
Here's how it works (short thread) 🧵
A Brief Overview of Time Blocking
Since my Time Block Dad post went viral last weekend, I wanted to share a quick overview of how the principle works (at least for me).
Time blocking, time boxing, calendar blocking is a great way to make sure you're getting the right tasks
I realized that not only are we making memories together, it's a great way to model healthy morning routines for him.
Now when he comes downstairs in the morning, I try to be reading instead of on my computer. I ask him to pick out a book and we read together.
THEN GYM 💪
Of course, my oldest heard about this and wanted to join.
At least one day per week we all get up early together and go on some kind of micro-adventure.
This week was crawdad hunting in a nearby creek 🦞
The oldest is more likely to sleep in though, so most days it's me and the middlest.
No, I don't do this every day.
No, I don't actively wake him up.
Yes, I still love my slow, deep work mornings.
But I'm becoming more aware how fast life goes as a parent.
My wife and I are working on a family PTO (parent’s time off) plan. Here’s what we are starting with.
1 night per week
Half day weekend per month
One full weekend day per quarter
Parenting little kids is one of the most meaningful parts of life, but the gift of time is one of
Sports tweet: Billy Napier may or may not win a natty at UF (it’s hard). I’m excited about the hire for a different reason though.
But the real story is the investment the Gators are making to bring football facilities, staff, & budget up to par w/ other programs.
#GoGators
Most days we go to CrossFit. There's an open gym at 7am and I set up an obstacle course in the corner.
Sandbag carries, box jumps, rope climbs, bar hangs, and more.
Whatever looks fun to him, we do together.
I decided to make 6-8am our special time as father-son.
He's the middle child and doesn't always get the same attention as the oldest or the baby. I started looking at this time as our golden hour.
We get up, have a quick breakfast, and head out the door.
How the f*ck do you write so many books so fast?!
That’s what George RR Martin said to Stephen King at a fireside chat in 2018.
King, who some people joke gets “paid by the inch” on his books, contrasted with GRRM, who is still writing the next Game of Thrones book 12 years
Besides, I can still rise & grind at 4am if I want my work/exercise/meditate/read time, right? 🤪
Thanks for reading. I hope it encourages you on days when you have everything planned out, but kids have other plans.
As

This week my one-man, side-hustle to full-time business crossed $100,000 in sales.
It took me 5 years, 1000 customers, and countless launches.

Big news - this is my last week at

.
I'm going to be a full-time creator.
This journey started in 2010 when I set up my first blog.
I started a podcast in 2013.
In 2017 I started my YouTube channel.
Now it's 2020 and I'm doing the damn thing. Wow.
Few points to highlight after yesterday’s calendar post took off 🚀
- Yes, my wife is at home with the boys and runs the house. This is a choice we made TOGETHER.
- Part of why I work as hard as I do is so that she can have the option of being at home for as long as she
@FitFounder
"It'll be slower than you think" applies to many other areas of life. I've always found exercise to be a helpful metaphor and reminder for business, relationships, and much more.
Thanks Dan!
If I had to choose one person who has become the face of the creator/entrepreneur movement the past 3 years, it would be the person who literally defined the term "solopreneur."
That person is
@thejustinwelsh
— and he's speaking day 1 of the
@heycreatorhey
summit on January 22!
Here's a simple example from coaching youth sports:
Describe the action: "You hustled back on defense"
Label the behavior: "You were very determined"
Praise it: "Your determination is a big part of our success!"
Here's why it works...
I should've started w/ newsletter sponsors a long time ago, but the logistics were intimidating, even for me!
I'll clear $4K in August w/ the
@ConvertKit
sponsor network. They find sponsors & provide copy.
It's so easy. I'm doing all the same writing work as before. Amazing.
Thanks for all the kind replies and encouragement. I’m rooting for every Dad on the journey 👏🏻

Who would be interested in a Creator/Dad/Entrepreneur community chat?
I'm not starting a business, just want to talk to other creator Dads more!
I'm just a dad

Without trying to sell you total life transformation
Just wanna hang, talk kids, good food, work, and fitness
Who wants to hang? 👋
@LayahHeilpern
It’s also not true.
Too many men take this as an excuse to concede to everything g their wife and eventually end up resenting her.
Lead, talk, love, compromise, argue, love some more.
But don’t throw your hands in the air and say “happy wife, happy life.”
Baby girl Ragland is here!
She’s perfect and we’re so excited for our little girl to join the family. Mom and baby are both doing really well.
No feeling like welcoming a new child into the world ❤️ Blessed to have 4!
Little tweak I made in my morning routine that has made an impact on how I parent and how my boys "see" me.
I used to wake up early, read, and then start my early work block (writing, etc).
Reading helps me mentally "warm-up" for the day.
But there was a problem...
Anyone else have their energy cycle way down between 4-8pm only to get a second wind and stay up until 11pm-12a after feeling like you might pass out before dinner?
Attention to details friends!
This video from
@CaseyNeistat
is great - made even better by the subtle inclusion of Casey wearing his Clickbait hoodie in the thumbnail 😂
Well done sir 👏

- Stress regulation
- Home repair basics
- Healthy relationships
What would you add?
Wow. Woke up to 1 million views of my early wake up thread!
Grateful it resonated and provided a reframe for those early morning “interruptions” that make core memories for our children.
And yes, my sons are up early today, too 😆
My son is jealous of me because I get to be on my computer—a screen—all day.
I'm jealous of my son because he gets to play outside, build LEGOs, and read all day.

Keeping Up with the Best 🥈
There is a scene from season 2, episode 4 of The Bear 🐻 that keeps sticking with me.
Many ambitious, productive people want to be the best. Even if they don’t say it explicitly, there’s an internal drive and competition with their peers and (for me)
30 year old Matt would be so proud of me.
I think about that guy every day.
That guy who moved to Nashville and wanted to be a creator. The one who applied to startup jobs for two years. The guy who setup WordPress themes for local businesses for $1,000. The guy who worked at
My plan for YouTube in 2022 is to stop worrying about how I think my videos should look and simply make more videos about topics and ideas that interest me.
Why write an email newsletter?
I ran a launch for a client with 800 sales and $120,000 in revenue.
He has 70,000 email subscribers, and 700,000 combined social followers.
Email drove 98% of sales... even though it's 10% of his social.
That's why you write a newsletter.
I want to reboot my YouTube channel w/ a 5 week, 10 video challenge.
Anyone interested in joining me? Start in September.

Love that he had to unzip his jacket at the end because he was so fired up 😂 The 3 month furlough on payments really is putting lipstick on the pig, just nuts.
I used to think if I felt too comfortable in life, I would lose my edge & be less successful.
That meant I didn't take compliments well or enjoy success. I'd just move to "the next thing."
But last week, I had an unexpected pep talk from a Lyft driver, Sam
Here's what he said:
A simple workflow for a profitable newsletter
2 highest performing lead magnets
Funnel to welcome series
→ with a pitch to the impulse product
→ or to learn more about bigger offers
Send a weekly newsletter
→ with topical deep dives
→ which can lead to a product
That's it
My favorite feature of Twitter is when I confidently close the browser tab only to open a new tab and have my fingers automatically type "tw" and hit enter before I realize what's happening.
Honestly, it's embarrassing how often I realize the task I've been procrastinating on can be completed in less than 30 minutes.
Don't get stuck in over-estimating time. Just start and see how far you can go. You'll be surprised!
Unpopular opinion.
Working from home makes you a worse parent (for young kids).
Kids don't understand boundaries. Reality is a parent disappears into a room and they're not allowed to disturb him or her.
Better to be gone for work in order to be fully present at home.
We’re worried about being on our phones too much and limiting screen time around our kids but now we’re normalizing looking like a bug and serving toast?
Hard pass.
My Newsletter Hot Take 🔥
Most newsletters are too serious about the quality of writing.
Unless the newsletter is THE THING you do, lower the bar for how "good" you believe the writing needs to be.
Most newsletters are complimentary to what you're doing, not the whole point.
7 strategies from Ryan Holiday's multi-stream, writer-driven business model.

honestly, I didn't even know about 7 of these before my research (and # 10 is my favorite)!
Used in a bit more subtle way, DLP works great with adults too! Try something like this:
"Thanks for putting the report together so fast. The attention to detail is apparent! Your work helped us land the new client!"
When I started creating content, was easy to be sad about low numbers (views, subscribers)

I used to think courses had to be long to be valuable or impressive.
Now I'm impressed the faster a teacher gets to the point.

I learned about DLP when I was a camp counselor.
It's a way of giving specific feedback that reveals a character trait instead of vague "good job" or "that's wrong."
Instead, label the action as brave, selfless, kind, and so on.
