Y'all! A lot of news, so here goes:
The Midnight Sun, as it has been over the last 7.5 years, is done.
TMS is becoming part of the

Hey

tweeps!
I'm excited--and mostly nervous--to announce the shiny new Midnight Sun Memo, a newsletter project offshoot of my work with The Midnight Sun that'll be launching on Monday just in time for session.

What's so remarkable is to take a few minutes to look at the people signing. This isn't some fringe political movement but a wide and deep coalition.

Sen Stevens is leading things off.
“We have a very healthy majority. … There are 17 members of our majority.”
He’s running it down but the gist is Myers, Hughes and Shower are on the outs.

Wow! The House has elected Rep. Louise Stutes as permanent speaker of the House on a 21-19 vote. It looks like Rep. Kelly Merrick, R-Eagle River, was the deciding vote.

Ron Alleva, the guy who was convicted of spraying poisonous chemicals in one the city's busiest gathering places for the homeless (claiming it was public service), says he's being considered for Homeless Coordinator in the Bronson administration.

Wowza.
This is a major ruling, finding basically that some sneaky pseudo-voucher language Sen. Dunleavy snuck into law made the home school allotment law so unconstitutional that the whole thing has been struck down.
#akleg
Alaska Superior Court issued major education decision this afternoon declaring Correspondence School allotments “unconstitutional in their entirety”. The Court said constitution is clear: public funds may not be used for religious or private institutions
Those gifts from Melanie Bahnke, a member of the Redistricting Board, to

Gonna have to get my cartoon avatar's hairline updated to reflect the last decade of retreat.
For a time, Anchorage was hot air balloon heaven. Then cocaine and insurance costs ruined everything.
Well, not exactly. But the tale of what happened to hot air ballooning in Anchorage reflects broader change in a young city.
The thing about a mayoral administration that has been caught lying several times about mundane things like the city's water supply is that you can definitely trust them to investigate themselves.

A side story: Saw a woman from the override side approach a bullhorn-wielding pro-PFDer.
She asked to talk, said she actually supported a full PFD. They started talking about how to pay for it.
Both seemed to agree on taxing the rich and oil companies.

FYI: Looks like the easiest non-flight way to get from Anch. to Juneau would be Monday's AMHS sailing out of Whittier, arriving in Juneau on Weds p.m. They require proof of negative test or vaccination and full-time masking.
TBH, couple days on a boat does a person good.
#akleg
What’s your response to people who didn’t get emergency notifications about the storm? What kind of outreach did the state do?
Dunleavy: “The point I was trying to make is we knew this was coming, most of Alaska knew this was coming. It was reported in international media.”
Democrat Liz Snyder appears to have beat "House Speaker" Rep. Lance Pruitt by 16 votes. Well within the margin for a state-funded recount.
Pruitt looks like he'll beat Rep. Talerico for shortest time as speaker-elect.

Anchorage Superior Court Judge Garton has ruled in favor of AFN, et al in the PCE lawsuit, finding that the Power Cost Equalization endowment fund IS NOT subject to the sweep as the Dunleavy administration had claimed.
This is, putting it lightly, a huge deal.

Additional resources are great, but fewer cases would be better.

Weird how the "just spend more money" thing gets held against schools when the governor got a 20% pay raise after replacing the state compensation board or when prison funding is up something like 40%.
#akleg
My initial review of the education bill is that it falls far short of improving outcomes for students. It appears to do the same thing we have done for decades - just spend more money. It doesn’t support the Reads Act, it fails to improve access to public charter schools, and it

APD and Mayor Berkowitz currently holding a presser. Summed up it's been:
APD: We've got a really robust internal investigation process.

APD: Because it is.
Q: And it's all internal?
APD: Yes. It's very robust.

There’s really no logic behind the House Republicans’ insistence that they HAD to kill SB140 because they didn’t want to give schools hope when the governor is just gonna veto the funding.
It would have taken just six of them to ensure funding for SB140 stands.

Also, frankly kudos to Stutes and Edgmon confronting her personally and not pawning it off on an aide or building staff. The question all along is who’ll hold those flouting the rules in the building accountable.

Reactions to Roe v. Wade.

Pretty remarkable interview with Anchorage Mayor Bronson, who:

Anchorage's mayor said he doesn’t think mask mandates or business rules prevent coronavirus infections. He said he won’t impose any mandates or restrictions — even if there are lines outside Anchorage's hospital emergency rooms.
