Friend took me for coffee, to talk.
Him: Wife and I are having a baby. Your kids seem cool. Parenting--how do you do it? Any tips?
Me: Whenever you see a stack of free paper napkins take a big handful.
Him:
Me:
Him: That's it?
Me: It is the only thing I am sure of.
My advice for the academic job market is to leverage synergy by circling back to deliverables. By focusing on core competencies, you can ideate, pivot, and punt your way to scalability. Optimize mission critical quick wins through disruption. Why is this so hard for people?
Today I led students through some primary source readings about a lynching in our town in 1884. Then I gave them a map and let them work out that it was two blocks from campus. Then we walked there--and talked about hard

A couple of weeks ago a young man outside a bar made fun of my mask. I leaned into him and said "My mom died of COVID last month. But you think that is fucking hilarious, don't you?"
He fell over himself apologizing.
(My mom died two years ago, not from COVID.)
I'm in a Spanish bar and my wife told the bartender we're here because of a three year old blog post he wrote about his award winning gin and tonics and he LIT UP and we're royalty now and the piano player has everyone singing along and this is where my life peaks and that's OK.
A new, bulletproof memorial for Emmett Till was erected on the shore of the Tallahatchie River today, after vandals’ repeated attempts to erase his memory here.

That's not it though. The house is paid for. It's the scene of so many memories. We hope the kids will return for visits. And the place is PACKED with a lifetime of stuff we don't know what to do with.

About ten years after I finished writing my first book, I was interviewed for a documentary on the topic. I reread my book to prep and I kept thinking "Wow, this is so interesting, I never knew half this stuff!"

My MIL used to hound me to get a job in her small city. I finally said to her, if you want to help me find a job there I need you to do something. She eagerly agreed.

We were *this close* to getting a Tesla when Elmo began his right-wing freakout. Got a Leaf instead. Not as cool but you have to do the right thing.
I came in from yardwork and popped open a LaCroix fizzy water. About halfway through I thought to myself "Wow, this is the best LaCroix I've ever had! What flavor is this?"
Reader, it was a beer.
This is an ancient, tired critique of academia that pretends there was a time when every professor was busting out world-changing ideas and discoveries. But pathbreakers have always been few, with incrementalists in their wake. That's how knowledge production works.
This article wasn't the place to go into it, but, we need to face a difficult truth in academia: Original thought—truly original, creative research ideas—are extremely rare now. Scholarship is mostly careerist incrementalism, the profession deserves sneers for it.
The police department in my town discovered a planting pot with some drainage gravel in the bottom and decided they foiled an Antifa plot and I guess what I am saying is maybe abolish the police.

At my old school the dean said we had to submit all our syllabi & gradebooks at the end of the school year in case he got a student grade appeal over the summer. But we could scan everything and put it on a CD if that were easier.
For ten years I gave him a blank CD every year.
I still admire the way that, when King County realized it was named after one of the antebellum South's largest slaveholders (William Rufus King, 13th Vice President of the United States), they flipped the script without having to order new stationery.

For the first time it occurs to me to wonder if Trump loses his grip on the party even after he loses office? He'll be flying his jet to MAGA stadium rallies and endorsing candidates and positions for the rest of his life, in or out of office, won't he?
I have been blocked from following my own university's Twitter account! I think this was because I pointed out the links between football and CTE.

I will never understand the jostling to get on an airplane as soon as possible. Commercial air travel is HORRIBLE. I loiter at the gate as long as possible.
Every tiny rural town around here has its museum, unfunded, unheated, its facilities and volunteers aging and breaking down. They are all two broken hips away from closing.
And each has some real treasures in its collections, things that no one else is going to preserve.

It is extraordinary--but as the College Board itself seems to be admitting, it is too little and too late. What are they going to DO about it? They could pull all AP courses from Florida and send a message. Instead, we get a strongly worded letter.

Nice job Daniel.
Question for all: Could a person of color who was prosecuted by Haskell make a legal case that their prosecution was biased, based on the views of the prosecutor's wife? It seems a stretch...

Students in my 100 level US history surveys write 3-4 page essays every week. The prompt is "Write a letter to a child telling them what are the most important things you learned this week." Their writing improves SO MUCH in just ten weeks.

This is weak sauce. You knowingly appeared on stage with a white nationalist, let him introduce and endorse and then pray over you. The whole thing went on for 5-10 minutes. You could have said something, you could have walked away, you could have done something then. Apologize.
Did a mock interview for a

Very proud of that question.
