The intensity of Mozart's C-minor piano sonata never fails to amaze me. It is a work of staggering contrasts with virtuosic writing which pushed the instruments of the 1780s to their limits (I have a square piano from 1785 which almost breaks every time I play this sonata on it).
Thinking of Lars and his closest ones in these very sad times 💔 the kindest man and most wonderful artist, he sent me this last text 2 weeks ago before I went on stage somewhere. I keep thinking about these words, to the point, true and beautiful as was the man and his music.❤️
Maurizio Pollini
5.1.1942-23.3.2024
“Don’t listen to your mother”, dad would whisper to me when she criticized Pollini for what she described as overly objective perfectionism. For dad, an architect and a composer, Pollini’s structural approach revealed new truths about even…
Bach was equally famous for being a great virtuoso of the keyboard and a great improvisor, as well as a composer, in his own time 🎹 Listen to Variation 1 🎧
There were so many excellent guesses, but the truth is that this is called 'Advent' and it was written by my father, Ólafur Óskar Axelsson, who is an architect and composer. I have so many childhood memories of dad playing this little psalm softly on our Steinway during advent ☺️
I'd like to take a moment to share some very simple tips that you might like to consider the next time you're entertaining friends or family with this wonderful piece of music 🎄

I woke up with a few butterflies in my stomach:
‘From Afar’ is finally out!!
I am indebted to many people in the making of this album, but one more than anyone else: György Kurtág, whose unequalled art lies somewhere between the tectonic plates of poetry and music.

I’ve been in the US for 3 days and during my stay, the Supreme Court has ruled that states can’t freely control who gets to carry a gun in public, but that they CAN control the reproductive future of women. When will these people cease to be called “Justices”?

It’s Release Day! I recently arranged and recorded some of my favourite cantata movements by J.S. Bach. Have a listen to ‘Es ist Vollbracht’ from Cantata 159, in my opinion one of Bach’s most tender and inspired arias, surprisingly rarely heard:
Stunning interpretation of the Goldberg Variations by Icelandic pianist Vikingur Olafsson. Where Gould is icily precise Olafsson is astonishingly vulnerable, subtle.
🥇Gold record awarded for my Bach album🏅Somewhere north of 100.000 sold worldwide -
and I have 125 million streams since signing to

4 years ago 🥰 So many people are listening to classical music and I am so thankful to my amazing listeners.
@HarrisonParrott
It is something else to be in a room with 5.000 people post-lockdown and play Bach and Mozart. I am beyond grateful to all who made it happen, and all who came to be with us in the music.
I have been to many classical concerts, but tonight's

was the most wonderful and emotional of all. I loved it utterly. The first Vikingur Olafsson

Bach encore brought tears to my eyes. 💕
I just heard the extremely sad news about Radu Lupu’s passing. Lupu brought a lot of lasting beauty to our world. May he rest in peace in the company of Mozart and Schubert.
On this day 5 years ago I released my debut album on

Unforgettable to visit György Kurtág in his home in Budapest and giving him From Afar - which is dedicated to him. He gave me scores with dedications and Hungarian cookies ☺️ My favourite living musician, my inspiration.
I am thrilled to share with you the cover of my new album, From Afar, which I’ve spent the last 9 months working on, and which is out on October 7th. Today the first single is out, Ave María by Sigvaldi Kaldalóns, and it is dedicated to my wife Halla
First time over 100m streams on

- a great year. Thanks to all of you - also those on the other platforms! Whatever anyone says, ours is a golden age for classical music. It has never before been listened to by so many people, from so many different cultures.
Ahead of tomorrow's release, a magnificent 5 ⭐️ review from
@TheTimes
"As soon as the theme gets under way, we know great pleasures are in store. Ólafsson's phrasing is so graceful, his articulation playful yet exact. The effect is utterly beguiling."
Home in Iceland, free from another quarantine (60 days since September) but then caught a typical kindergarten cold. Thanks for all the sweet messages. 37 is very exciting: Our 2nd son will be born, 2 new albums coming out, vaccinations happening and the world awakening again💙🥳
Flying home for Christmas, more than ready to recharge after such an intense year. I’m looking for book and album recommendations as I finally have free time to listen and to read… any tips?
When you are told, just before going on stage, that György Kurtág is attending, it’s like having a triple-espresso.
Müpa, Budapest, 29.11.2023.
Look forward to playing a very special, all-Kurtág concert in 2026 to celebrate his 100th birthday.

A true master has passed. I was in awe of Sakamoto. We were toying with the idea of a collaboration. But one shouldn’t toy with such ideas. One should make them happen.
He did a rework of otherworldly beauty for my Bach Reworks album back in 2019 ❤️RIP💔
Happy 90th dear Glenn 👑
I’m listening to my favourite performance of the Goldbergs (live ‘59) and feeling so grateful for all the new ideas, the new ways of playing and thinking music GG left us. For having been the first pianist in history to..
230 years ago, on this day, Mozart died. One afternoon in 1791, his final year, he composed these 3 and a half minutes of music which can change the way we think and feel about our whole existence.
This was my 2nd encore at the

First time playing for (and with) the magnificent creatures that are the Austrian cows. Tutti bravi dear 🐄 ! Immaculate 🔔 counterpoint w the Goldberg Variations, Bach would have smiled. What a day in the Austrian alps. One doesn't know Austria from only going to Vienna ❤️ 🇦🇹
Great meeting

for a full house as Sir Rushdie received the Halldór Laxness Literary Prize in Reykjavík tonight. I would have loved another couple of hours listening to these two🤩
..the most familiar warhorses, made any piece of music an essential part of our time. With Pollini things were never simple - Chopin became the musical architect, Stockhausen the poet, Beethoven the philosopher.Many of us became better listeners and players. May he rest in peace.
This is the greatest honour I could receive! Last recipient of the musical prize was György Kurtág. The other winners this year are some of my favourite thinkers: architect Rem Koolhaas, logician David Kaplan and mathematician Jonathan S. Pila.
Congratulations
@VikingurMusic
on receiving the 2022 Rolf Schock Prize in Musical Arts! 👏
"I'm grateful for this inspiration & opportunity for wonder — to escape my own area of expertise to marvel at that of my distinguished fellow laureates."

Variation 13 has this gentleness, simplicity; and the way the melody is sort of hovering on and off the beat! Listen now on your streaming platform of choice 🎧
In the midst of this stream of Bach, I want to share with you the gently graceful "Girl with the Flaxen Hair" which continuously juxtaposes the harmonic novelty of the pentatonic scale with more conventional harmonies to create a musical image that is at once dreamy and tangible.
Nice to see this "sold out" notice. He will play the Goldbergs
@calperformances
May 4th. That too is sold out. But stay tuned, he might possibly possibly return very soon to SF, playing music by a different composer. That one not yet sold out...
Goldberg Variations is available to order now on multiple beautiful formats including limited edition crystal clear vinyl, limited edition white label vinyl, standard vinyl, and CD, with exclusive signed art card bundles in limited supply 🎧

Variation 15; nothing prepares you for it. You had G major from the Aria and the first 14 variations - the brightest of music, the happiest of times - and then this happens 🎶

One of my favourite moments in concert this year was sitting in the audience in Igor’s recital in Hamburg in December, hearing this achingly beautiful music, so touchingly played by Igor and masterfully arranged by Busoni:
Dad turned 70 yesterday. To celebrate I played a concert of his music for friends and family in Harpa. He is a bit of a renaissance man - a wonderful composer, brilliant architect and a poet. He is also the best grandfather my boys could have. Pictures from 1985 and yesterday.
Grateful for a sold-out tour in Quebec City, Montreal, Philadelphia, Houston, Minneapolis x2, Washington, Toronto x2, New York City, Princeton, Boston - it’s been a grand time in N-America. Ready to go home tonight, turn 40 on Wednesday, and play
