I am 100% in the “exhausted middle.” Right wing pro-gun and conspiracy nuts, left-wing women-erasing nuts, Ds ignoring insane inflation and everyone wrong about 1/6 (it was horrific but also the left obsessed with Trump). I know I’m not alone. How does the middle take control?
Oregon officially enacted a rule permanently masking its school children today despite overwhelming public opposition. So, wherever you are living, it’s not as bad as Oregon.
Norway, Sweden and Denmark have dropped all Covid restrictions. Ireland will drop them all 10/22. This isn’t the US south - these are highly educated nations with vaxx rates similar to Blue states. Why isn’t that persuasive to the Covid-zero people?
Our kids were forced to mask for an entire year once they were allowed to return to school. We are now well into the school year with no masks and everyone is fine. Is anyone going to admit that compelled masking for 12 months was useless and harmful?
I turned to the Emmys. Fully-vaccinated adults without masks. My fully-vaccinated 15 year old (at significantly less risk of disease than these stars) must wear a mask 7 hours a day. This is an honest question - liberals, zero-Covid folks…please tell me why this makes sense.
First graders in Oregon (and WA, CA, NY, etc.) have never seen a teacher or a classmate smile at school. Never. Don’t tell me that is harmless.
@ORDems
Has any pro-masking person given an answer on when we can remove mask mandates? I only see "not yet." We are two years in. If you can't give a data and evidence-based answer on when mask mandates can be dropped, you support permanent masking by default.
Portland people- Ispent 4 days in Phoenix. People smiled and said hello. Restaurants were staffed with friendly and helpful people. Living in this dystopian hell hole of tents and trash is destroying us. It is community-wide PTSD/depression. Vote differently - save our city.
@TinaKotek
Or, one guy loves his home state so much that he is willing to spend $7 million to save it from you? Phil is not a raging Republican. He has given money to Ds for years.
@NEAToday
Gaslighting 101. Too bad you didn’t “know” they needed to go to school to learn and thrive and chose to keep schools closed for 18 months leading to massive mental health issues, devastating learning loss and being trapped in abuse and neglect. So….no, no you don’t.
@billoram
Maybe you should apologize for telling people to "grow up and shut up?" It is amazing how these young women were more professional in tone and substance than you were.
Teacher unions did this to themselves. It was astounding to watch them tell taxpayers, schools and families that they weren’t essential and school wasn’t important.
@unheardparent
When one daughter went to school 4 full days a week (private school) and the other went to school 5 hours a week (public) and their schools were less than 3 miles from each other. Will never forgive
@PPSConnect
, its Board members or union.
@JuliaBrimEdwar1
@Drewid95
@EilidhPdx
And there it is. The Oregon Ds have admitted that they are willing to destroy every other priority in order to pass HB 2002 without amendment. 10 year olds getting abortions; 15 year olds sterilizing themselves. That is their top priority. Shameful.
@teachbk
There is no profession that complains on social media more than teachers. Honestly, maybe you would be better and happier if you stopped complaining so much.
30% of teachers not showing up this week ....after just having a month off. What happened to "for the students?" No way that 30% of PPS teachers have unchangeable airplane reservations. If they do - they didn't need a raise. Shameful.
Why does this misogynistic man write for
@Oregonian
? This is the most insulting and infuriating thing I've read in a long time. A man, who has nothing to lose, telling parents of girls, and the girls themselves, that they have no right to fight for fair competition. Shameful.
Regarding the transgender athlete who won an Oregon state track title: I don't have the answer. But I do know that the bad-faith internet cretins who are exploiting her identity for a belt-notch in the culture wars don't either.
New
@Oregonian
column:
Okay - this was poorly-worded. I am not saying the south is uneducated. But in the PNW, pointing to policies in the South gets you nowhere. Right or wrong - that is the reality - so my point is that the places that Blue people idolize are also lifting restrictions. Apologies.
Absolutely appalling. There is no justification for vandalizing the inside of a publicly-owned library. This is just vandalism. What a stupid waste.
Inside the occupied Millar Library on PSU campus
@rweingarten
You are gaslighting again. We see it. Gee - why would parents worry about that when they have been accused of trying to “kill teachers” by opening schools.
Where is the state of emergency on meth in Oregon? We are # 1 in the country. People die daily and crime is relentless.
@OregonGovBrown
@TinaKotek
What are you waiting for?
1,400 slots. $120 million dollars annually. That is $85,714 per kid. This is ridiculous. Just give ever working parent a damn voucher. What is the County doing with this insane excess? Paying bureaucrats. To do nothing.
@BrimJulia
A high school track and field coach in Oregon was FIRED after penning letters to state officials advocating for single-sex sports.
John Parks spoke with The Publica about his termination.
"If I am going to do my job, I have got to advocate for my damn girls."
An Oregon state agency that serves as the main pass-through of housing $$ from the federal government can’t account for a quarter of a billion $, and there are no receipts.
For housing.
Even if you need to picket, why does this look like a celebration? This is a dark day for our district, our City, our students and our families - but the teachers are giddy? I honestly don't understand it. Kids will suffer, irreparably, from this. Why is this a celebration?
Portland families, students, educators, and community supporters stood with us at the picket line to join us in demanding a contract that creates
#greatpublicschoolsforall
.
Our hearts are full and our voices are loud. Together we will win!
@pdxteachers
digging its own grave as parents look to alternatives after a week out of school with no end in sight. I guess they didn't learn a lesson after losing 4,000 students with Covid closures that went way too long?
In yet another show of incompetence,
@PDXParksandRec
has closed every facility through Monday. MONDAY! EVERY FACILITY! 10 days after this storm started. Stop voting yes on their bonds. We are getting absolutely nothing for our tax money. No accountability to taxpayers.
@MelissaJeanSays
@TheEliKlein
"I don't need your studies." Alas, how we got here. Yes, let's throw the gold standard of research out the door and rely on "Melissa's personal experience" instead.
The US government bought 171 million doses of the bivalent booster. The vast majority of those will be thrown away - like the 0-5 vaccine. If these are so good - why can’t normal insurance cover it? Why is no media covering this insane waste of money and resources?
PPS email today: big budget cuts due to plummeting enrollment. Down 3500 students since pandemic. Does it dawn on board, admin or teachers that the parents saw the product and don’t want it? That maybe they should improve it? Not just beg for more money?
@PPSConnect
Two brave female athletes answer the claim that they don't mind losing to biological males. Turns out they do. This is so well written. We must stop this unfairness now!
Nowhere is the myth of inadequate funding stronger than Oregon. Funding has increased dramatically in recent years, while school and teacher performance has declined. When will parents stop blindly supporting teachers and start supporting kids?
@angrybklynmom
At least she pivoted after 7 weeks. 18 months in and west coast Governors still requiring masks everywhere - even outside, even vaccinated - despite zero evidence they reduce case counts.
As the data pours in about the horrific failure of remote learning, Oregon plans to return because “cases.” They have learned nothing. Vote them all out. Our children need to be protected from these people.
Raleigh, NC: Remarkably similar size to Portland, similar educational attainment, slightly lower cost of living. Democratic Governor. Drugs are still illegal. It is shockingly clean, very little graffiti, no drug addicts on the streets, no tents on sidewalks. It is possible.
Gaslighting. We know that closed schools cause massive mental health issues for kids - and worsen the impacts for kids already suffering mental health issues. Portland teachers have closed our schools for at least a month. They are advocating for their wallets - not our kids.
Happening now: Portland teachers are holding a candlelight vigil advocating for students to receive better mental health assistance. They believe that would happen if the district met their strike demands.
@thehowie
He is vaccinated and repeatedly says that the vaccines are effective at preventing ting serious disease and death and strongly recommends that all adults get vaccinated. If you have to lie ti make your point - it isn’t a good point.
So much here - biggest take away is that the union was offered 14% pre-strike and after locking our children out of school for a month - took 14%. It was all for nothing. Unforgivable
@pdxteachers

@jrlsilverman
When your entire state and its main City are drowning in fentanyl overdoses, homelessness, tents, trash and graffiti, and all you can do is post inane tweets about mail-in voting. Earth to
@SenJeffMerkley
- please come to Portland for a visit. Hit me up - I'll give you a tour.
I have used the term “politically homeless” for awhile but have never felt it like I do tonight. Gun Twitter is disgusting. The Ds abandoned our children for 2 years and are obsessed with meaningless identity politics. There are no leaders for centrist rational humans.
Strike Day 8. Kids and families are struggling. Teens are spending days in their beds depressed. Littles home alone while parents work. Learning is slipping away, but
@pdxteachers
? Having a "tailgate" and "dance party." This is despicable.
@KGWNews
@KATUNews
@KOINNews
Schools closed all of November, a joke week before Christmas break, now another week out. How can we even call this a school "year?"
@pdxteachers
selfishness and inability to do math had exponential consequences for students - but they just get to enjoy another paid vacay.
@AlecMacGillis
Where was this? How pathetic. Don't come. It still sucks here. Last state without a reopen date. Pools are closed. Libraries are still closed. Schools closed virtually all year (6 weeks of 5 hours a week). You can go to a Timbers game, but only if you show your card.
As a true believer in public schools, this saddens me, but PPS is doing nothing to win families back. If I had a Kinder - absolutely would start them in private. What is missing from this article is the plummeting test scores and inadequate instruction.
Did she intend this to be shown to kindergarteners? WTAF is this?
Oregonians - this is what the Oregon Democrats truly think about you. They think you are stupid.
As a lifelong D - I urge you to vote differently.
My housing production bill is making its way through the legislature, but I’m not losing sight of what’s most important: Oregon needs to build more housing – now.
Oregon is so broken. We must vote differently. Senior managers for the state now live permanently out of state, don't pay income taxes and...wait for it....we pay their travel costs when they need to be at the office!!!! This is completely insane.
We are 2 days into a weather-related state of emergency, with a week still to go. We had 1/4 inch of snow this morning and now the sun is shining. Oregon, a land once filled with hardy pioneers, is a complete clown show thanks to
@OregonGovBrown
. Embarrassing.
No. Nope. Stop it.
Kicking vulnerable kids out of school is not "for" them. PAT is striking because they can't do math and can't understand that the district doesn't have the money they want.
#gaslighting
.
Hearing that
@pdxteachers
added a brand new demand last night for an "extra day" of pay. The extra day had already been baked into the COLA formula both sides had agreed to. It is $4 million - which just means more layoffs. Total bad faith bargaining. End the strike. Now.
An Oregon high school girls tennis coach resigned this week in protest of transgender student-athletes being allowed to compete with cisgendered players.
Timbers lose because Portland stopped being Portland in March 2020. I hate what Portlanders have done to this City I once loved. We let go of everything that made us wonderful over one stupid virus. My heart is broken.
This is absolute insanity. A teacher making more than $100K a year can just not pay rent for 9 months and the landlord has to subsidize them? Please don't vote for this idiot.
Oregon passes a law that prohibits schools from recognizing that girls menstruate. Don’t Say Girl.
Why are we erasing women? Gen X friends - we have work to do. We cannot let these nuts erase the gains for women that we obtained.
Only women menstruate. Period.
Oregon’s new bill should be called the ‘Don’t Say Girl’ bill, as it tells teachers to eliminate the word ‘girl’ and ‘feminine’ from their vocabulary…It’s great to provide Hygiene products, but Oregon is going about it in the most offensive way possible-this is an attack on women
Went for my run in the neighborhood tonight. Passed 5 different trash heaps. So, being a glass half full kind of girl, I was happy to think that the trash will all be gone in January.
@TinaKotek
promised to “clean up the damn trash” and I am holding her to it.
This is Democratic leadership
In Oregon. During an emergency that is killing people every day. This is why we need to vote differently. The Oregon Democrats are incompetent to run the government. It is truly that simple - all levels.
Person Oregon hired to manage its now $270 million drug decrim program:
*Had no prior gov't experience
*Went on medical leave 1 year into job & remained on leave 11 months before resigning.
*Was recently sanctioned by OR Board of Naturopathic Medicine
“Men’s tennis & women’s tennis are almost two separate sports. If I were to play Andy Murray I would lose 6-0 6-0 in 5 to 6 minutes. The men are a lot faster, they serve harder, they hit harder” - Serena Williams
The truth was completely normal to acknowledge 13 years ago.
Can the GameStop guys open schools? I mean - that was a pretty cool FU to some powerful people. We need something to break the stranglehold of urban unions to save kids. That sounds like a Robin Hood mission...
@Mark_J_Andersen
Oregon has no opposition. We are one-party ruled state. That is the crux of the problem. It is tribal here - if you think critically or discuss data - you are labeled a "Trumper" and anti-vaccine. It is maddening.
Good read. This….
“And problems interact and cascade: Oregon ranks No. 1 among states in illicit drug use and No. 50 in people who need drug treatment but don’t get it,”
How can anyone vote for Kotek? The Ds have built this crisis.
The ratio is so sweet here. Nice try
@TinaKotek
. But we lived this. We wrote to you, over and over and over again, but you ignored the data and the suffering of Oregon kids. Stop. Stop lying and pretending you care about kids. You aren’t a parent. You don’t understand.
.
@ChristineDrazan
threw our students under the bus when she voted against the Student Success Act, which adds a billion dollars per year for our public schools.
She will always side with corporate special interests over everyday Oregonians.
Our Governor is completely incompetent. How could any sentient human think this would make an ounce of difference? In a single 2 blocks in Portland, you can't cash in your bottles....for 30 days. Problem solved!!
Gov. Tina Kotek today will take the extremely rare move of exempting the dowtown SW PDX Safeway and nearby Plaid Pantry from the requirement they redeem cans and bottles under the Bottle Bill. The 30 day exemption is part of Kotek's fentanyl emergency.
Hi
@SenJeffMerkley
- can you come to Portland, sit down with the district and tell them how to find $200 million? Because, this isn't helping. It is just sowing more division that will lead to more days our children are locked out of their schools by
@pdxteachers
.
@PPSConnect
I am strongly supporting
@pdxteachers
as they strike for fair compensation, smaller classes, classroom safety, and stronger equity, early learning, and special education programs. Our teachers know what kids need to learn and be prepared for their futures.
@OregonGovBrown
@OHAOregon
@ORDeptEd
This is unscientific and will destroy vaccination uptake. There are ZERO pediatric Covid hospitalizations in Oregon right now. Why would anyone get vaccinated if it doesn’t change anything and you are telling people it doesn’t work. You are destroying a generation of kids.
This is seriously disturbing. Approval of a booster is a political “victory?” What? Why? And we wonder why people are suspicious of the vaccine?
*I am vaccinated and very pro-vaccine.
In a sweeping victory for the Biden administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday endorsed booster shots of the Moderna and the Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccines for tens of millions of Americans
Oregon and Washington friends…what are we doing??? We are not more at risk. We are highly vaccinated. This is embarrassing and will destroy whatever tourist industry we have left. Come on!
@OregonGovBrown
Could all the teachers who have been teaching in person for months safely please put out a PSA to the blue state and city teachers? They won’t read dat or listen to experts - maybe they will listen to you. Our kids would really appreciate your help. Thanks.
PPS Board still working hard for an opening tomorrow and now all our favorite anti-schoolers are crying that the teachers can't be ready tomorrow after their self-imposed month off. These people always elevate adults over children. It is just gross.
@PNW_working_mom
I am going nowhere that requires employees but not customers to mask. It is abhorrent and they won’t get my money. We must all do this - we can’t have a permanent servant masked class. It is gross.
Fantastic. As a lifetime supporter of public schools, I've sadly come to the realization, between the union closing our schools during Covid and PAT closing our schools again all of November, that the only way forward is to free our children from the control of union activists.
Oregon families want & deserve the ability to let their children learn in the setting that meets their needs full learning potential.

Oregon Poll - 12/2/23
Why is
@pdxteachers
and
@oregoneducation
silent? Your unions have contributed to massive learning loss since 2020. Where are you? Is this really the educational system you want? Kids that can't do math or read? I can't believe that most teachers are proud of this.
The
@nytimes
today spelling out in stark national framing what our education coverage
@Oregonian
has shown for months: OR is an outlier in not seeing academic rebound post pandemic. Maybe getting called out the paper of record will light some fires around here?
President Biden took a necessary and important step to help prevent further escalation of the war into Rafah by pausing arms shipments to Netanyahu. We applaud him and encourage the administration to push for a ceasefire and the release of all hostages.
The violence must stop.
This is so perfectly Oregon Ds. Looks at this list. None of it is action. It is all meetings and paperwork. Our streets are more garbage-filled than ever - the tents multiply. But the Gov is declaring victory because she went to a bunch of meetings.
This is why so many in Portland despise the cycling community. Imagine being so arrogant and selfish that you think you can alter city streets just because you want to. Imagine if we all acted that way.
Since the school year's start,
@ordinrysprheros

@ifihadastick

Prelim data:

WF (yellow)= masks optional
We hope
@CDCgov
will be interested, too
Peak Portland. Your teens can't go to school because of our extremist selfish union who can't do math and understand the district can't pay their demands - but your 14 year old can volunteer to Narcan overdosing homeless people while schools are closed. Hooray!
Portland teachers are on strike and families are home with students. We have many ways for your students to help from home and make a positive impact during the strike. Students 14 years old at least can sign up to volunteer in our free cafe. Students under 14 can make sack
Please read every word and share widely. Devastating statistics on learning loss. What are districts doing about this? We must hold leaders and unions accountable for this immense and entirely avoidable harm. Absolutely infuriating.
You are doing great
@TinaKotek
@GovTinaKotek
. Just great. Totally normal that most of the citizens of the largest city in the state would leave if they could.
When are you picking up the trash again?
