has arrived and deliveries are on their way to each Respect school. McDaniel, Parkrose and Roosevelt school colors are represented along with the Respect principles: Show Up, Work Hard and Be Kind.
The rapid rise in COVID-19 cases driven by the Omicron variant has caused a dramatic rise in absences of students and staff at Cleveland and McDaniel HS. We have reached the point where we need to close these two campuses for in-person learning starting tomorrow, January 7.
We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Beverly Cleary. A Portland icon, literary giant and PPS school eponym, Ms. Cleary's impact on multiple generations of young people was and will continue to be immense. May she rest in peace.

Kindergarteners at Atkinson Elementary got a big surprise during their PE class!!
PE teacher Codi Sanchez applied for a grant from All Kids Bikes. The Rotary Club of Portland offered a generous donation so the school can offer this bike riding curriculum to all kindergarteners.

Starting Sep. 2, we will be serving meals in person from 38 different sites. Every Monday and Wednesday from 3-5pm, parents can pick up several days’ worth of meals for their student(s) - or parents can sign up for meal delivery to their homes. 🍎
So far this week we have distributed more than 13,600 meals, and it continues today at 15 of our schools from 11 am-1pm. You can also pick up learning packets, along with forms to borrow a computer to use while schools are closed. The sites:

Earlier this morning, there was an incident off campus involving students; one student allegedly robbed another student with a weapon. No injuries were reported. The incident was reported to staff and to the police. 1/4

All schools will be closed again tomorrow (Friday, January 19).
Most schools are ready, however, our buses transport roughly a quarter of our students, and they rely on many roads that remain inaccessible from blockages, low wires, and persistent ice.

Due to a teachers' strike, all schools will be closed Nov. 1. Tomorrow at 7 pm we will confirm whether schools will reopen or remain closed for Thursday. Beyond that, you can expect a text and email from us each evening by 7 pm letting you know if school will open the next day.

71 students at James John just got free bikes and all the safety gear to go with it!
After school, volunteers helped match the 3rd-5th graders with helmets, locks, lights and a bike. The school even had an obstacle course set up so the students could ride their new bikes!
All schools are closed Tuesday, January 16. After-school and evening activities, including parent-teacher conferences, are also canceled.

We will be releasing students for the day.
We will be doing controlled release, releasing students by sections of the building. Students are asked to get their belongings and depart campus immediately.
The piano inside the lobby of Lincoln HS is an open invitation for anyone to play.
In the mornings, you might even get to hear a full jazz combo. It's an amazing way for these students to perform their music for others.
The school has had a piano in the lobby for about 7 years.

The PPS and PAT bargaining teams met Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and exchanged full proposals. Nonetheless, settlement was not reached, and schools remain closed tomorrow, November 13.
We want to encourage students to return to their respective schools after the Climate March. All students will be welcomed back to finish out the school day. Please be safe!
