Portland Association of Teachers is the largest union of educators in the state of Oregon. We work to create the great public schools our students deserveπ
After months of planning, negotiating, and fighting for the contract we and Portland students deserve, it is time for us to take the next step.
We are on strike until district leaders make real investments in Portland students and schools.

Yet another example of PPS pushing school staff beyond their training and capacity rather than investing in students and fully staffing schools.

Jamie McLeod-Skinner is the proud daughter of a retired public school teacher who taught her to always leave a place better than she found it. Jamie models people-centered leadership and her pragmatic, progressive approach to problem solving , forging strong ties across Oregon.
When her son asked what a strike was, Bayou explained it to him. 'I told him, theyβre not paying them enough money so they have to strike,' she recalled. 'He was like, βOh, mommy, thatβs so sad β¦ maybe we can give them some money.'
Hi Jonathan, Angela here.
Maybe no one has informed you of the racist and sexist hate mail my latina VP and I receive due to your Twitter trolls and the media campaign used to demonize the very people you are "trying" to get back to work to be with children.
PAT is proud to endorse Jo Ann Hardesty for City Council Position 3. In her first term on Portland City Council, Jo Ann has been a fierce advocate for programs that improve the lives of Portland residents, PAT members and PPS families.
What an incredible weekend of art building! Thanks to all who helped us mobilize for smaller class sizes, the health & safety of students, add'l student supports, community schools, planning time, & a cost of living increase enabling teachers to live in the district they work in.
Spread the word! Citywide rally today at Roosevelt High School from noon to 2pm.
Together our voices will be too loud to ignore. See you there!
#GreatPublicSchoolsForAll
P.P.S. (no pun intended): The printer was working fine for PAT the other day.
I personally made our packets. I was able to print fifteen 50+ page packets before your 8pm press conference, so lmk if yall need help making copies, I got you π
President Angela Bonilla explains why teachers are prepared to go on strike if necessary. We will do what it takes to win the public schools our students, families, teachers, & communities deserve!

Maybe instead of tweeting and playing the victim while your team refuses to talk to us about class sizes, and actual additional mental health supports, y'all can actually do the work to get our kids back to school.
We're painting this banner at the Community Art Build for Public Ed? We need your help. Come out & meet other students, educators, & community members ready to do what it takes to make sure students & families have access to great public schools.
Look for your ballot in the mail this week! And when you receive it, please vote for these great PAT PAC-endorsed candidates b/c of their support of union values; knowledge of education issues; commitment to racial equity; and advocacy for strong, fully-funded public schools.
P.S. it's also racist and sexist to expect the 2 women of color in union leadership to fix all the racism in PPS, when y'all have been here for years and yet can't train the people y'all employ. We have a Racial Equity union training, but we can't make things mandatory...
Thank you educators, students & families that came out to Tuesday night's Board meeting! PPS must fully fund a full continuum of Special Education Services to meet the needs of our students.
When people can't afford to live where they work? Lower morale and more burnout, study reveals. Healthy, happy educators make healthy happy classrooms. 4% COLA? Nope.
PAT PAC board has endorsed these candidates running for the Oregon House and Senate. We need strong progressives in the legislature 2 fight 4 school funding, manageable class sizes, & better living conditions for teachers, students, and all Oregonians. Support them this November!
Shout out to our paraeducators, parents, and community members for joining PAT during our March on the Boss! The community shows up and shows out for our SpEd Educators π

Today's the day! Join us tonight & all weekend at the Community Art Build for Public Ed. We'll be painting this design by Asa Wright on a giant 24-ft parachute.
No art experience necessary & there will be activities for every age level and skill level.
Maybe instead of trying to get X trolls to doxx teachers, pps leadership could implement the anti-racism, implicit bias, and culturally responsive practices trainings we agreed to in 2020? Or GG could have kept the equity department vs applying out every year since arriving?
Some people have never been hit and cussed out by a 1st grader, and it shows π
People may make bad choices, and as the people with power (as a teacher, prez of a union or chief of staff) we have to hold them accountable and teach them to do better, not shame them publically.
Mark your calendars! ποΈ Many PPS workers are STILL working without a contract. Show your support for all PPS workers at this joint picket/rally before the school board meeting on 10/10 at 5 pm.
We're excited for this weekend's Community Art Build for Public Ed. This video gives a glimpse of the art we'll be making as we fight to win the public schools all our students, staff, & communities deserve. Video:

Artist Asa Wright's design will be screenprinted on patches at our Art Build for Public Ed. Workers deserve to be treated w/ dignity & respect. Help pump out patches perfect for jackets, tote bags, purses, or wherever you desire. We're stronger together!

Every fight for better working conditions comes with attempts by management to divide workers with fear. Dr. West breaks it down into its simplest terms: Stay together.
We'll have copies of this beautiful poster featuring PAT teacher member Ginger Hulzer at this weekend's Community Art Build for Public Ed.
Poster done by MKE artist Jeanette Arellano based on a Kirsten Koors photo. Graphic design: artist Claudio Martinez.
π§΅OSAS data has shown what educators knew was true: The pandemic impacted student learning negatively.
We need small class sizes in order to address EVERY student's needs and give move attention to each student. More instruction, more meaningful assessment, less testing.
Check out this amazing parachute design we'll be painting at this weekend's Community Art Build for Public Education. We're stronger together and when we fight, our public schools, students, and families win!

How are these essential workers supposed to teach if they can't afford housing?
These numbers are unacceptable. As Governor, I will push to make sure all kids are reading by 3rd grade, schools are expanding career technical education, and weβre all working together to help every student succeed.

but that didn't damper our spirit, energy, or ability to get things done. We completed 600 picket signs, 3 massive parachutes, 15 banners, 800 patches, & 200 fill-in posters. Together, we will win for all of Portland!
How productive are you at work when it is hot? At PPS, very few of our buildings are air conditioned. When it is hot outside, our centuries old brick buildings become ovens.
Educator Working Conditions are Student Learning Conditions.

PPS diverts $$ that could go to reducing class sizes, restorative justice, hiring a nurse, librarian & social worker for all schools, but PPS spends $$ on consultants & for profit companies. Educators deserve to be treated as professionals & students deserve fully funded schools.
Today we are beginning a series about all the different ways that
@OUSDNews
is impacted by privatization. Hint: it's more than just charter schools and is a big reason why OUSD is so top heavy and mismanaged. After 20 years of it, we need change.

One thing I want to make sure we make clear: Every educator is doing the best they can with what they've been given. Every educator goes to work daily hoping to do right by our kids.
When we demand better working conditions, we do it to improve learning conditions.
Come one, come all! Portland Association of Teachers is holding a Community Member Event! Swing by the PAT office parking lot on October 15th (345 NE 8th ave in Portland) to pick up Free Yard signs and other swag. Hope to see you all there!
We also know that in order to change this trajectory we need MORE:
MORE educators = smaller class sizes
MORE planning time= stronger instruction
MORE specialized support = early interventions for those who need it
MORE culturally relevant resources = Every student feels seen
One unfortunate thing about working for PPS is that admins tell staff one thing and the public/parents another. We don't want to go against a directive and lose our jobs so we don't share what we've been told. It's a shame
I havenβt heard of a change in the thresholds which were stated in public meetings. Class sizes of 33/34 were too high as it was, but I have not heard PPS leaders say they arenβt going to keep commitments made to parents & students. Inquiry made tonight

FOIA = Freedom of Information Act request. You can ask any public entity for information, and they have to let you know how much it will cost for them to provide it (wage hours to dig it up, printing, etc) before they proceed. Great way to know what local government is doing!
Tina Kotek served as OR's House Speaker for 9 yrs. As Speaker she pushed the passage of the Student Success Act to invest $1B/yr in new funding for OR's pre-K-12 ed system. Tina Kotek is running for Gov 2 use her exp as a progressive leader to continue fighting for all Oregonians
On a completely different topic: Anyone have data on the efficacy and success of an impromptu cross grade blended class vs small class sizes?
I.e., how effective is reading and math instruction in a class of 22 vs 34 vs 3rd and 2nd grade blended class? Asking for a friend?
Christina is a product of OR public schools & has spent 1000s of pro-bono hrs with unions & non-profits, improving the law for workers. As Labor Commissioner, she will root out discrimination and wage theft, expand apprenticeships & improve working conditions 4 essential wrkrs.

PAT is proud to endorse Jessica Vega Pederson for Mult Co Chair. Jessica championed the Preschool for All program, now becoming a reality for some of our youngest neighbors. She is a strong voice for public education, housing, and a just economic recovery from the covid pandemic.
The bill removes the 11% pop cap on add'l SpEd funding, adds weight to stus experiencing houselessness. PPS currently has close to 17% SpEd, and abt 6600 stus in temp living situations. We advocated for more $$ to accommodate the raised cap, which was set in the 90s! 2/3
